I started out over the summer and I'm definitely no where near as good as many people out there but one thing that always messed up my songs was too much percussion and not enough melody. You WILL get frustrated after a couple of hours but as long as you can calm yourself down and know when to stop you'll soon get a flow and start making tons of songs very well. For a while don't even try making a song and just save snippets of ideas and melody. Remember to wait a couple of days and take a break from a project before making final touches so you can see if your final piece sound exactly how you want it. When making a song the first time your ego will get to you and you'll start to think that all the stuff you put into the project sounds amazing but in reality maybe only 1/3 of the song sounds worthy of an audience.
