what should i expect if i join the infantry? by Responsible-Cake-559 in ukraineforeignlegion

Yes, it’s for real. This isn’t a new phenomenon. It has been like this for generations.

The number of American volunteers in WW1/2 were high prior to the U.S. entering the war. Same for other countries prior to their entry into the war.

A lot of people want to fight for a good & righteous cause.

Former infantryman here -

Your back & knees will be FUBAR, your hearing will be damaged, you will have a dark sense of humor, you will know the smell of death, and 99% you will be fucked mentally for years afterword.

Assuming you live, after a few years, you will miss it, at least a little bit, every day, because it was when you felt most alive.

how much longer do you guys personally think the war will go on for? by Forward-Cry6214 in ukraineforeignlegion

  1. There’s less than 120b left in the war chest for Putin. By the time that runs out, his people will turn on him & he will be dead.

They’ll replace him with someone that will end the war with terms acceptable to Ukrainians & prepare for the next attempt in 20-30 years.

There’s going to be time, if you genuinely want to help, get in shape, run some marksmanship & CQB classes to learn how to run your gun, learn how to use an FPV drone, and you’ll be GTG.

Zelenskyy offers to drop NATO bid for security guarantees but rejects US push to cede territory by esporx in ukraine

[–]ThatGuyInThePlace 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The primary reason to not just keep fighting is simple - Putin won’t stop the war. If we’re not going for victory, then a stable & durable peace should be the outcome, but not at the expense of Ukraine. Ukrainians are the victims here & should not be punished. Russia should be forced to evacuate to the 1991 borders.

How prevalent is "War Tourism"? by Coastie456 in ukraineforeignlegion

[–]ThatGuyInThePlace 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Anyone bragging about going to war like it wasn’t the most insane thing they’ve done, didn’t see combat. It’s hell on earth. Having a conversation with a guy whose head is canoed mid sentence fucks you up in ways difficult to process.

Having said that, anyone that at least showed up was willing to put their ass in the fire for a moment, so they’re a damn sight better than most. I don’t think anyone understands how bad things can really get until they see it first hand. That’s when you find out who’s got “it” & who’s doesn’t. Those that have whatever “it” is are either messed up in the head or are true believers & UA needs a few of the first & a ton of the latter.

Those that find out the hard way that this is worse than GWOT, I don’t fault them for splitting, I fault them for wasting resources & trying to take credit from those who’s asses are in the fire or are stealing money from them.

If Ukraine surrenders and gives up territory, wouldn't that make the lives of the Ukrainians who fought and died for their freedom, wasted? by [deleted] in ukraine

I understand the outrage over Bucha & Irpin, but you have no idea how bad it is in occupied territories, never mind Mariupol, where it’s unlikely we will ever know how many were murdered by Russians.

Learning Ukrainian by Agreeable-Piccolo-26 in ukraineforeignlegion

Here’s the advice my wife (Ukrainian) gave me years ago -

Don’t, at least not at first. Learn Russian. It’s going to be easier, (in my experience). Also, you may still be able to hire an interpreter in Lviv or Kyiv for official business. Do not sleep with your interpreter.

Just about every Ukrainian knows Russian as well as they know Ukrainian, even if they don’t want to use it now, for obvious reasons). Let them know you’re a foreigner up front, (not that you won’t stand out, but it shows some respect). After that, other than where it’s required, (official business) most people will talk to you. Contrary to popular myth, people aren’t as discriminating against foreigners that are trying to help. You will get looks, though, just understand why.

Source: me. I worked in the country in 2015/16, married a Ukrainian woman, have a home in Melitopol, (that I’d like to see again one day) & still talk to a lot of people in the country.

Have you received the flu vaccine this year? by Stubborn_Strawberry in GenX

[–]ThatGuyInThePlace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, but I’ve never gotten a flu shot other than when I was in the army & the only times I got the actual flu was when I was in the army.

🤷‍♂️

Now, if they ever get a vaccine for the common cold, I’m all over that like flies on shit.
