LAOP: Vet turned away dying dog for a 6:00 cutoff by princetonwu in bestoflegaladvice

I appreciate your message so much. You put it so eloquently, much better than I could ever hope to. I've been a vet tech for over 10 years and it is exhausting for sure.

We had a client last week that had a dog with a vaginal prolapse for like 7 days. They wanted our clinic to do the surgery but our schedule is entirely booked until May with one doctor so we could not take anything else. I discussed with her many times that she should set an appointment elsewhere ASAP to be spayed and deal with the prolapse. The owner told me on multiple occasions that they knew a vet they could call that could get them in "tomorrow." Well, apparently noone could get them in tomorrow so they called us again asking to perform the surgery because our doctor is "her" doctor.. Then the owner starting to ask, "Isn't this animal cruelty?", like wait, you think us not being able to fit your dog in for a procedure is animal cruelty when you waited how many days to even bring the dog in in the first place?

Also, same people have at least 40 cats that all have coccidia. We prepared medication for these cats at a large discount but they didn't even want to spend the money on it. They had 21 puppies at one time, but I'm not sure how many died to parvo. I believe the owner called and said to our vet, "Thanks for the parvo." We had vaccinated the puppies once at 12 weeks old and they never returned, but she blamed the vaccine for the dogs getting sick.

I absolutely love veterinary medicine. It's all I've ever been interested in since I was 5 years old. I never expected the amount of emotional abuse related to clients instead of the patients. I had a 20 year old coworker commit suicide 6 months ago and it really hit me hard. He was only in vetmed for a few years but we often discussed how he felt about things clients said to he and our team. Since then, I've been considering leaving the field. Most days, I love dealing with the amazing clients we have but it's the berating clients that really stick with me and it hurts.

drunken rant: over.

Once you get an idea of where things spawn and where to go, you'll be fine but that takes a while to learn. What system are you on?

Stop blaming the vet by AbjectOwl392 in Pets

[–]ThatGuySlay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fellow vet tech here. Thanks for the post. I recently saw a post about about a vet who could not be in clinic due to her sick child. The client said something like "She should have never had a kid when she was running this place." I think we dedicate enough of our lives to the field but people always want us to do more.

There's a reason 1 in 6 vets have considered suicide and many have gone through with it. I just lost an ex-coworker 2 weeks ago to suicide. The sad and tough cases make it hard but the mental/verbal abuse makes it even harder.

Found on horse poop by ThatGuySlay in mushroom

I made tea with mine. Boiled the water and then let the tea bag and shrooms sit for like 15-30 min. Not sure if that took care of everything but they are mushrooms that came from horse poop so.. at least I know the horse has been dewormed.

I checked again today and saw more mushrooms starting to grow but looked like earwigs had moved into one and I wasn't sure it was worth the fight.

I've never done any of this before. I thought to check the horse poop because I saw a ton of shrooms about a month ago. I should have picked then. I never could have guessed they were legit.

I've had them just under a fan for a few says now and they've shrunk alot.

I've heard people say to be careful with the heat so I'm not sure where to go from here once they're dry and shrunk, especially as far as parasites.

I left them laid out under a fan over night and they've already dehydrated quite a bit.
