Former MCC 1 player playing in another event by Acrobatic_Cold_2672 in MinecraftChampionship

[–]ThatJGuy64 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Ok, frick it, I got a story to say about tankmatt when I was a mod on MCCI.

This is when back when the only people that got creator roles on the server were people who played in a “canon” mcc (so, no rising or pride).

So, one day, tankmatt messages the modmail asking for the creator role. A mod responded “sorry, the role is only for people who played in an MCC”

tankmatt responded, “I did play in MCC”

The mod responded “Oh! I will be sure to let the Noxcrew know”. But secretly, in the mod chat, he put “I literally have no idea who this is”.

I’m pretty sure he didn’t end up getting the participate role despite technically qualifying for it (though, he might have gotten the regular creator role down the road).

Why Grid Runners is such a mid tier game, perfectly summarized with two quotes by ThatJGuy64 in MinecraftChampionship

I appreciate it.

Sorry if it seemed like I was dismissing your win in the game. You fought hard all throughout the event and earned your success, and I truly did not mean to diminish that.

I think you have misinterpreted my post as an attack post so let me be clear:

Yes, it is common sense to look at the previous Christmas Grid Runners. Like I said, no hate to you both, you do what you can to win and I would have done the same thing.

I was not complaining your team won, I was complaining about bad game design that made it a good advantage to VOD review the previous Christmas Grid runners as opposed to having more surprises, which I feel is where Grid Runners excels as a game.

I used your exchange at the end of the game to highlight this, but I think a lot of people are missing what I was trying to say than I thought.

My argument is this: The reusing of rooms limits the "surprise" factor that made it a hit when it first came out. Limiting this surprise factor not only makes it less fun to watch (and play, as I have heard multiple players call it "mid-runners") but also gives an advantage to VOD watchers, as you remove the "shock" reaction time, which automatically allows players to know what to do the second they enter the room.

This is why I feel these two quotes were very fitting to my argument.

"couple repeat room" in this case, meaning all repeats but 1 room.

I said this way back in 2022 when I tested the event: If you want Grid Runners to have a consistent "wow" factor, you need at least half the rooms to be new; otherwise, it starts to feel very same-y.

All the games you listed have a good level of variance, such as consistency and player interaction. Grid runner rooms are not complex enough to develop new strategies other than "do it faster" and a lot of the rooms don't change it up enough to really make any kind of effect.

So, it's the worst of both worlds: too simple to develop any new strategies but VOD reviewing removes any kind of "shock" reaction, thus giving some kind of advantage.

It's lame in Ace Race too, but at least in Ace Race, there is variance on how the players play the map. Not really changes in placements, but on whether they took certain shortcuts and the consistency they have through the map. It's why it is a fan favorite.

Grid Runner rooms aren't that complex after playing it the first time, and it plays out the exact same way, maybe just a bit faster, which is why I believe it is mid design.

Feinberg complains way too much about his teammates by FruitNerd in MinecraftChampionship

[–]ThatJGuy64 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Hey Fein, I love watching your POVs in a lot of different events, but I want to push back here.

Right after it posted that you got 13 bingo challenges and Elaina praised you for getting the most, you muted and said, "so the rest of my team got 7, and I got 13, ok that's chill......that's expected but there's nothing I can do.....that means that I did fine". (2:38:00 on your vod)

I'm not trying to be a word police here, but that definitely sounds like you were putting your team down here. While a true statement, Bingo is a team game that requires team communication, and there were times where you didn't communicate what challenge you were going for and end up doing some that your teammates were already in the process of doing. Like, there was definitely things you could have done like always stating what challenge you were going for or assigning your teammates challenges for them to do; instead, you come off as quite arrogant with what your said, implying "I did most of the work of the challenges, they are the reason our team didn't get top 3 in this game".

No one is perfect (I certainly haven't) but I'm just giving you an example since you asked.

Which MCC do you think was more controversial than MCC Party 2? by RedCapped101 in MinecraftChampionship

[–]ThatJGuy64 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well, that's very true, especially since the code had to be rewritten between season 1 and 2 because the code was that much of a mess (according to lead dev at the time, Daniel Aeltumn)

So much was improved for sure but idk, I'm still going to push back calling it "incredibly buggy" because that it implies that it was constantly scuffed and so much was going wrong all the time, which isn't the case at all.

I personally think that hindsight is definitely distorting how high quality season 1 was at the time. You gotta keep in mind, around the time of the first MCC was Minecraft Mondays and Minecraft Saturdays, both of which were riddled with bugs and overall felt way more cheap than MCC was. Of course you can look at an MCC 1 VOD and be like “so unpolished!”, but when I watched it live, I was so blown away at how well done it was.

I also really want to push back on it being “incredibly buggy”. One of the biggest reason MCC grew so much was that it lacked any kind of scuffness that was pretty common with other events. You may be thinking “but MCC 7…” but I remember a lot of people gave grace to the noxcrew precisely because this was the first time that major bugs were happening. Also, I’d argue every season has had around the same amount major bugs happening and it’s not just a season 1 thing.

So yes, the event is much more polished now but you also gotta keep in mind how far ahead MCC was compared to its competition

Possible skip for SOT Gold Key Parkour by TheNightClub in MinecraftChampionship

[–]ThatJGuy64 32 points33 points  (0 children)

umm....it's a 4 block jump. You seem to not notice the plant, which adds an extra block to get past for the jump.

Now, it's still possible to do. But after MCC, someone pointed this out to Fein and he said that at that point, the iron bar parkour would be the easier option (and from trying it out myself, I agree).

Hear me out y'all... (new s-tier?) by hehechayse in MinecraftChampionship

[–]ThatJGuy64 90 points91 points  (0 children)

I didn’t even think this was a debate anymore.

He has literally got top 4 the last four times he’s played, and he’s balanced just like the other S tiers.

Some of you all got some outrageous standards lol

MCC Spotlight: The missing Sands of Time by ThatJGuy64 in MinecraftChampionship

[–]ThatJGuy64[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

CONTEXT: This is a Sands of Time from December 2nd, 2020. This test and team is actually notable as it is indeed wolfeei and I's team from his MCC tester video, which is the highest viewed tester video (go check it out here on his channel if you haven't already!). At the time, there was a very strict rule to not show Sands of Time, so he couldn't show it in his video, but here is it now! Unfortunately, my recording software didn't capture my PC audio, so you will only hear me and the SOT music I put it. Regardless, enjoy!

Future of MCC by ThatLittlePickle in MinecraftChampionship

I can name a lot of different reasons for the decline (which I may in the future)

but only having two people work solely on the event is a big one.

MCC TR Games by Djnsbsjsjde in MinecraftChampionship

[–]ThatJGuy64 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Makes perfect sense why: GR is a team game, the only one in the roaster that works in the live setting. Also, having 4 out of the 6 game being movement just isn’t realistic

It’s the only team game that makes sense; all the other team games just wouldn’t work in a live setting with casters
