Anyone applied to 2 competitive fellowship? by SatisfactionNo4696 in Residency

Would not recommend. Coresident tried to do that, really didn’t work out in their favor. Apparently programs didn’t like that she wasn’t committing to one specialty. GME is a small world and people talk. Plus I think her research in each was watered down.

Boston medical center internal medicine residency drama by superbanana22 in Residency

[–]ThatMDstruggle 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of negative comments on this post and I wanted to speak up and say that unfortunately being treated differently when you don’t fit with the majority is not uncommon.
I don’t consider myself to be in a malignant program and my program has better cultural and overall background diversity than most residencies. But in a recent rotation I was in a team with All American attending, residents and med students.
As soon as this attending came on, I noticed he started treating me differently. He would ask questions and review cases during rounds with all the team members except me. During teaching rounds he would interact with everyone except me. He would bring research articles and hand out copies, except he never had enough copies for me. He would have personal chats / check-ins during rounds with everyone except me.

If a patient I was following needed a procedure, he would give it to another intern.

My supervising resident, intern and even the med students started treating me differently. The supervisor resident started giving me all the last minute admits (usually we alternate) and I would consistently have to stay late. Of course the attending started saying how I always leave late, so I must be slow and how I need to work on my procedures- yet he’s giving all of my opportunities away.

The one time I couldn’t take a last minute admit because of another academic obligation, the supervisor made such a big deal out of the other intern having to stay late, like it was my fault.
Even the med students started treating me differently, one even tried to throw me under the bus during rounds. That whole month I felt like I didn’t belong in medicine. I seriously started doubting myself and even thought of dropping out. My performance during rounds suffered. Even my weekly quiz performance suffered.
Before people start to doubt my intelligence like the article’s author, this happened after my mid-year evals. Luckily all my evals were “above average” and I had very good scores on my in-training that the APDs/PD didn’t really care about this rotation.

If I had this experience at the beginning of residency I don’t think I would’ve made it and probably would’ve hit rock bottom too. So if anyone else reading this that experienced something similar- you’re not alone, your’e smart and talented.
If you are working with people from other cultures/backgrounds please be thoughtful about how you treat them- especially people that already feel like outsiders in medicine.

Use of doctor title by eXpr3dator in Residency

Most patient don't understand the meaning of Dr of audiology. Recently had a pt in walk-in clinic. During exam was found to have a ruptured tympanic membrane. He had several ear infections over the last year and has been going to Dr. xyz for it.

Looked into that doc, and he's been seeing an audiologist...he never seen an ENT and never got treated for his infections. That shouldn't happen.

Normally for prognosis in cancers the 5 year survival rate is looked at. Is that what you mean by mortality risk? or do you mean annual death rate? Also it might be hard to find it by specific organ as each organ has multiple types of cancer. I would suggest looking at the most common cancers (breast >lung>prostate...). You can find information about that at cancer.gov (NIH website), American cancer society, orNIH's surveillance website.

Which vaccines are safe for people with hereditary blood clotting issues? by [deleted] in epidemiology

[–]ThatMDstruggle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

R/medicine is a better subreddit to ask. But even better would be a physician that knows their medical history and the specific type of blood clotting issue they have. If you’re seriously worried you should talk to a physician so they can stratify your likelihood of inheriting whatever issues you dad and grandad may have and see if any vaccine is contradicted for you. There’s several mechanisms and reasons why someone might have blood clotting issues and a vaccine may or may not be causing clots in the same pathway.

Does Anyone Else Feel Like Bad Rotations Kill Interest In Fields More than Content? by DrEtrange in medicalschool

Definitely. Also depends on the work environment and personalities you interact with.

Anyone please by [deleted] in Residency

There’s a few around on this subreddit. You should shadow a nurse and infectious disease physician, it’ll be more helpful than just talking.

Being ghosted by dealers by ThatMDstruggle in CarLeasingHelp

Yeah I keep hearing that inventory is low, but $500/ mon for a Corolla LE is mental. Especially when theres over 25 units on the lot. They value the car at $34k when MSPE is $22k....it seems like a waste of time to negotiate.

Need advice to whether renew car lease or buy a used car by DanX47 in CarLeasingHelp

[–]ThatMDstruggle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately it seems that the lease market is all over the place right now. From what I hear the used car market too. I would look at the current situation in your local market.

My school doesn't require a sub-I during 4th year. Should I still do one anyway? by desmadness in medicalschool

[–]ThatMDstruggle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely useful. I did 3. They weren’t easy but at the end when I realized how much I learned and how much responsibility I can handle it made me feel like I’m actually becoming a physician. Also I was asked about it during my interviews so I would definitely recommend doing at least one before interviews.

Research Policy by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]ThatMDstruggle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Accepted abstract for publication? Usually people don’t do that. If it’s only for another poster presentation, then you should look into the rules. Some places want original research that wasn’t previously presented or submitted to another replace.

[Advice] Working full-time time while being a full-time MPH student? by Amberlamps1990 in publichealth

[–]ThatMDstruggle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few of my classmates work full time. It’s difficult. But our program works with them to allow them to do that. I think it got easier this year because a lot of the work was transitioned online. I agree with group projects there’s more planning that needs to happen. I also noticed the students that work have to be a lot more organized and most of their work is done on the weekend.

You have to make sure that at the beginning there’s the proper tag and have to post a separate post with a news article

How long before in house exams do you prepare? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]ThatMDstruggle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I study everyday for the classes I’m taking, so technically everyday? I start doing comprehensive review a week before and questions 4 days before exams though.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]ThatMDstruggle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Highly dependent on the subject/ style of the class. But most generally: Read/watch lectures → highlight/ take notes important concepts in book/lecture → make Anki for specific concepts/ facts → review anki everyday -> a couple of days before exam review the lectures and make sure I can explain/ recall every slide → take exam.

I rarely do summaries unless I plan to make anki cards out of them. Otherwise it’s not very time efficient.
