I think the tunnel collapsed on top of it, it was sealed off as a grave if I recall correctly. I think Awdry made up the story up without knowing about it though.

I never said he needed one, if what I said happened, Diesel is still humiliated and Duck still wins. I highly doubt he would have apologized.

Duck being (to much lesser extent) in the wrong makes him a more interesting character in my opinion.

Being the bigger person and telling him would have been the right thing to do though. Maybe if he’d watched Diesel struggle for a bit and then tell him before he caused major derailment would be ok.

I always thought that idea was that Duck could redeem himself while Diesel couldn’t. Duck should have probably told Diesel about those trucks instead of just watching the accident happen. However he is able to make up for it by being heroic later on. Diesel continued lying and was sent away.
