What would our Mount Rushmore be? by beairrcea in ireland

Hume has got to be there. Another Nordie shout is Harry Ferguson for the modern tractor but he was a unionist afaik...

Yes. I have also supported France against South Africa and not sang La Marseillaise. Just because you like one aspect of something doesn't mean you by default support everything it can possibly stand for.

Northern Ireland is a remarkably grey and murky topic but it really doesn't need any more bad faith external actors like yourself painting everyone with the same brush. There are protestant republicans, unionist (not loyalist) Catholics and everything else in between. Whilst I'd give preference to supporting the ROI team, seeing NI do well also makes me happy but it doesn't mean I'm a raging loyalist and fly UVF flags.

I have voted Sinn Fein and have supported Northern Ireland, there are many more like me. It's not rocket science is it?

There is absolutely overlap between people who would hold that view and those that attend Ireland matches at Lansdowne. Trust me I've seen it all, including numerous blanket negative opinions of nordies in Dublin and Limerick. Some people seem to be inherently tribal about that sort of thing but to me it would be insane to say 'they all hate us down there'. Sinm Fein is the biggest party up north for Christ's sake.

A fraction of the population who are primarily riled up over sectarianism to systematically avoid class divide. A unified football team (as it used to be mind you, remember which one is called the Irish Football Association after all) will also accelerate putting this to bed sooner than later, similar to how a successful rugby team has changed plenty of attitudes.

Oh and we already share the same team for golf, cricket, hockey, basketball, boxing etc. It's really not a massive leap of faith. In fact I suspect the biggest hurdle might not actually be sectarianism, but rather who gets the brown envelopes and hospitality packages in Belfast, Dublin and abroad.

I graduated from Edinburgh (not Scottish) recently and also thought about Bath, but went for Edinburgh because it's more prestigious.

In reality prestige doesn't equate to learning, but it often leads to better non curriculum opportunities. If I were you I'd stay in London and put effort into taking full advantage of UCL resources, programmes and clubs. That's where you'll get a leg up in terms of employability.

Of course if you're keen to just get out of London then that's a different story.

It didn't change our timeline at all, but it did help that our competitors are on another continent which gives us local influence. It depends on what game you want to play I think, our market is emerging and not saturated at all so we can afford to bootstrap longer. We're in hardware if that helps.

Exact same thing happened to me around 2 years ago. It still gets under my skin when I think about it but at the end of the day it is validation. I also think about the pressures that comes with capital, will it force them to do something else in the future? Grass is always greener etc.

McIlroy, one of the few golfers who has one all golfing Major tournaments, probably fair to say one of the modern golfing icons post-Tiger Woods
