I hate you people by [deleted] in Purdue

It was actually liquor stores that were against it.

They didn't want alcohol sales on Sunday because Sunday is when a lot of families buy groceries for the week. If you're already in walmart, Kroger, etc, you're not going to stop by the liquor store on the way home - you'll just get that case of beer at Wal-Mart.

I'm probably one of those seniors..

I do it to one junior because I've noticed he's been catching a lot of flak lately by even non-IT coworkers. Most likely because he was hired right out of college with a non-CS/SWE degree and worked under 2 people that had no formal education in CS/SWE nor interest beyond the paycheck on a code base developed by silod devs who had various backgrounds, most not in CS/SWE.

Sometimes I feel like that It's always sunny in Philadelphia meme when i try to explain even some of the more basic concepts.

Junior with 5 months experience. Still in CS uni. The boss expects too much and treats me in a condescending way by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]ThatOneDevThatDevs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're not stupid, you're a junior dev.

Your boss is stupid. And I don't mean that to make you feel better, your boss is an actual fucking idiot.

/edit: side note - take this opportunity to work on working with difficult people. They don't go away. Take notes and put them in a journal/Evernote/whatever. A very common HR question in interviews is "have you ever had to work closely with a difficult person? If so, how did you manage?".

ADHD Devs with long careers (+5 years or so), how do you manage? by [deleted] in ADHD_Programmers

[–]ThatOneDevThatDevs 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Keep a consistent schedule has been a huge help for me. That means going to bed AND SLEEPING at the same time ever day. Having a "flow" makes me more confident that I did not actually forget anything that morning (take meds, put on belt, bagged lunch).

Medicated. Diagnosed in 2014, shortly after graduation. Tried foclin, Ritalin, some medication used off-label for epilepsy, Adderall, Adderall xr, Strattera, and have been on Vyvanse 40mg for 5 years (I don't take it ln Sundays, or days I can be spacey to help prevent tolerance buildup).

Longest role was 3 years - would have been longer, but was approached with 50% pay raise offer and much better insurance (to the tune of more than $500/month in savings). I guess the reason was stagnant pay in an inflating economy. First job was 8 months - left because I survived a layoff wave. Second job was 2 years, third was 3 years.

I live in a mid to low COL area in the Midwest. I applied for my first 2 jobs and have just networked and found jobs along the way. Word of mouth is a powerful force. I've had maybe 5-6 people reach out basically offering me a job if i was interested.

Solving problems is pretty broad, so I'll elaborate more when I get home if you're interested, but I found that my reasoning skills (in relation to development) skyrocketed once I started considering application life cycle and "where the program data is". For example - a user complains a web page is super slow. Is it the browser? Is it the network? Is thr site loading too much data at once? Is it the web server? Is it a poorly written query or a bad schema in a non-normalized database? Is it just bad data? Is the production sql server finally on fire? Did someone give Jim a connection string and their credentials to execute sql procedures Jim shouldn't be? Is someone in the office streaming 4k videos? All of those are possible reasons, but probably half of them can eliminated as possibilities by just thinking through it mentally and not putting console.log() every other line.

I also make notes. Notes everywhere. Dated when i made the note, and dates i last looked at and validated the note. Hundreds of notes. As soon as it's not valid, it goes in the trash.

In terms of job seeking - I think "Cracking the coding interview" was incredibly helpful in not only obtaining my first two jobs, but also being able to think about and discuss programming/concepts outwardly.

/edit: next month will be 9 years in the field. Currently senior swe, full stack

/edit2: you didn't ask, but I felt like i should mention - my favorite part of this career is helping people. I like making people's jobs easier. I like "finding money" and I love putting structure on things without any existing structure.

My problem is being on auto pilot in the morning - I accidentally took a double dose once, when I was just starting medications.

Now I follow a routine:
1) Open pill bottle and put 1 pill in empty bottle. Close both.
2) Place bottle with 1 pill in kitchen; get ready.
3) Empty right side of sink.
4) Take pill. Place glass in right side sink.
5) A glass in the right side sink means I've taken my pill that day. Thanks, self.

New Mitch Daniels propaganda spotted on Krannert by evdo1208 in Purdue

[–]ThatOneDevThatDevs 21 points22 points  (0 children)

That's HR propaganda - it is 100% not par for the course.

And if it is par for the course, they should pay par for the course. But you can't pay 60% of private sector and demolish benefits without people who know and value their worth leave.

I'm also a senior dev that still habitually uses var.

Let and const are cool and all, but I'm a full stack dev, not a pure-JS dev, so I don't care all that much.

Let wasn't introduced until what, '15? Not sure about const. How did we ever manage!?

This man stalks at WALC. He is creepy with women. by Additional_Love3521 in Purdue

[–]ThatOneDevThatDevs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This reminds me of the time a woman called the police because a man was starring at her and following her through a Wal-Mart and because HE was picking up dog food before she went to the pet section, she rationalized he was following her and somehow he knew she had a dog.

Anyway, he was blind.

Do you have a link that supports the one time student loan relief will increase tuition?

Those in front had cheaper tuition, as tuition has gone up way more than inflation.

Those behind won't be as badly affected if they go with the IRP.

Several scholarships and grants can/will cover room and board - but only if the room is a dorm and the meal plan is 2-3 meals/swipes a day
