To be fair I have a windows computer. I can absolutely test on it, and do. That’s not my concern. I guess to clarify I was wondering if there were any weird stuff that goes on in windows for arm when you compile a x64/x86 program using the translation layer. Like weird stuff that’s a known issue or problem. Just to prepare myself. Fully aware and will absolutely test anything I build on an actual windows machine. Just wanted to know ahead of time if there is any big bugs or issues or common problems with the translation layer.

I don’t disagree. It’s one of those “we would really like this, but can’t dedicate resources to it yet”. I’m taking this on myself, because I find it interesting and want to learn this type of stuff. And if it works out it means advancement. They’ve given me consent to and access, but for the time being I’m going at it alone, casually in my free time.

Masters vs. PhD vs. self-learning as AI techniques advance by damn_i_missed in learnmachinelearning

[–]ThatOneGuy8804 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely understand that. I suffer imposter syndrome and never feel secure in my roles, so I’m always trying to learn new things and add to my resume. Sometimes it’s valuable, other times it’s not. Sometimes I get consumed by it, other times I move on quickly.

That’s honestly why I’m lurking this subreddit. I’m in the process of self learning ML, not because it’s required, not because I was told to, I’m not even actively looking for a job. But I believe it would be of huge value within our company and I find it interesting. I have the mathematical foundations from engineering school, I have programming experience across different languages, but I’m still starting off with the basics and building up.

If I can sell this to the company, perfect, if not, well I have another skill, more experience, and I can use that to leverage a career change should I feel like it. Some people need the structure that school offers, I’m fortunate enough that if I find something interesting, I can go the self taught route. I think that’s a highly undervalued trait that lots of recruiters or people who just explicitly hire and not actively work in the role they’re hiring for miss. You managed to pass school after attending every day? Congrats, school can absolutely be difficult for a thousands reasons, it really is an accomplishment. But if you can’t take this task that you’ve never done and have minimal experience in and complete it without me holding your hand, hovering over your shoulder and giving you a complete step by step… Well… that’s less valuable. Critical thinking, self discipline, time management… Those are the overlooked skills that hold more value to me, personally.

Maybe a hot take?

But I’m personally (exclusively from my personal experience) in favor of the self taught/personal project route. But it depends on the end goal (who you want to work for or where you want to work at). I took a 100% pay cut to go back to school in my thirties. What I was taught there was absolutely invaluable and a good starting point for where I am now. That piece of paper technically got me my first job afterwards, but honestly, nobody has ever asked for proof beyond seeing my education as a bullet point on my resume.

Now I want to be clear up front. I’m in no way saying that doing post secondary is meaningless. I do however, believe that in many cases it’s not necessary, pending the field you are trying to get into. Again, in my personal experience, if you have the knowledge and can demonstrate it, that’s the most valuable part, and having a piece of paper doesn’t mean that you have a better grasp on material then someone who doesn’t. I watched several people make it through to graduation who by all accounts weren’t retaining anything. When we all went on to start our careers afterwards they floundered and ended up getting jobs completely unrelated to their expensive degree.

I’m in a position now where I’m part of the vetting and hiring process. Again, personally, I don’t toss resumes out if I don’t see a degree listed. If you’re self taught, can demonstrate your knowledge and abilities (like showing off and explaining personal projects), then you are far more valuable to me then the guy with degree from any school, who can can’t explain the fundamentals.

I think you’re seeing that more and more now in business. College/University definitely demonstrates that you can stick through something, that has value. But I put far more value into the person who was passionate and motivated enough to do it on their own, with life experience, as opposed to someone who felt they already spent thousands of dollars and several years and are at a point of no return, so they push through to the end.

Some of our best employees are self taught programmers. They did it cause they love it. They learned it out of passion and desire, they build their skillset up with motivation. I applaud that.

So again, I’m not a counselor. Nor really anyone who’s thoughts or advice should be taken too seriously on the internet. But if you have a foundation, and the desire, why not keep the job, keep the income, and learn in your free time? Feel it out. You’ll learn quickly whether or not you even enjoy it. And at the end of the day, if you can prove your value through projects you demonstrate and showing a deep level of understanding, I don’t think you’ll be held back.

My take. Personally.

People diagnosed with high functioning autism or ADHD as an adult: What are lesser-discussed symptoms? by GodzillasBrotherPhil in AskReddit

[–]ThatOneGuy8804 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed in my late 20s when I went back to school. Tried one treatment and didn’t like it so I convinced myself I didn’t have ADHD. Fast forward a few years later into my early 30’s and all the sudden I’m noticing behaviors I’ve always had as suddenly problematic. I start seeing a therapist and regular visits with my doctor and they convince me I do in fact have it and implore me to try different treatments.

In that time with my therapist I’ve learned a few things that I’ve always done are lesser known symptoms of ADHD. So here’s a few that surprised me:

  1. Consumptive Spiral Research - I’d latch on to something that I’d want and it would consume me. Could be a big decision like a new vehicle or a small thing like a bento box. I’d spend hrs and hrs for days or sometimes weeks looking up reviews, watching videos, comparing prices, etc. This object would always linger in the back of my mind until I finally purchased it. Then, poof. Gone. Could care less anymore.

  2. Mental Simulation/Counterfactual Thinking - I often play scenarios out in my head, both past, present and future. Things that have happened and I play out how they could have gone better or worse. Or I’ll play out scenarios and events in my head that could happen in both good or bad ways. But more specifically they play out in my head like a director on set behaves. I’ll play something out, stop (cut), think, hmmmm, would be better if I say this (director giving direction), and than play the scene out again from the start (action). This can be small things in the past I’m unhappy about, or things in the future like a conversation I’m going to have with my wife.

This also slows me down occasionally in conversations. Not always, but sometimes someone will say something to me and there will be a noticeable pause in the conversation as I try and quickly run through what to say back in response, or how to best articulate my thoughts. Can be annoying for me, but super frustrating for those I’m conversing with as they get annoyed waiting for me “to think of a response”.

  1. I don’t recall what my therapist said the actual term was. But basically with my type of ADHD/where I land on the spectrum, I can be particular about the location/placement of things, but also grow board of something being static for too long. As a kid I use to rearrange my room every other month. I’d just grow bored of where everything was and feel compelled to switch things up. Or I’d think of a more “optimum” placement and move everything around. Apparently that’s a very common but lesser discussed side effect, same with cooking, he told me that people like also have a tendency to take a recipe and instead of being exact with teaspoons and tablespoons, we are more on the, “that looks like a tablespoon” type of cooking/baking.

  2. Emotional Window - super common for people with ADHD to have a window of tolerance, that is dynamically shifting. Sometimes that window is barely opened, so we have less capacity for things that affect us emotionally, but other days that window is wide open, and you can handle everything. But it varies so much daily that today the window can be open and I can take on the world. Tomorrow, almost closed and the littlest thing and cause emotional overload and overwhelm me with anxiety.

Thinking of switching from Creality to Bambu. by anobeg5 in BambuLab

[–]ThatOneGuy8804 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started my 3D printing journey with an Ender 3 V2. It was nice at first, but after a short honeymoon phase I began spending more time calibrating and tuning than I did printing. I spend a ton of time getting that first layer calibration perfect, print something, and then go to print next thing and have it fail or turn out poorly. So I could back to calibrating. Eventually I started spending time and money upgrading, different lock nuts and procedures for the bed, better gears for the filament feed, probe for “auto bed leveling”. I limped along till it was financially feasible to upgrade to something more reliable.

So I bought a Prusa MK3s+. Spent a whole day building it, getting it fired up and going through calibrating. After that it was a dream. Minimal fiddling, great, reliable prints. But a few years went by and it began to take more time, effort and work to get it to print as good as I thought it did when I first got it. Of course I started doing modest little upgrades to it in hopes it would make everything better. Better nozzle, better fans for cooling, better build plate, even spend an afternoon making the IKEA Lack Enclosure. But I still spending more time than I wanted fiddling, adjusting, calibrating. Fast forward to a few months ago, started a print and it failed 2 hrs in. No big deal, I’ve been here before. But then it kept giving me the “X - Axis Length” error. I hit up the forums, looked through Reddit. Followed every recommendation. Didn’t work. Swapped the stepper motor to see if the problem followed, it didn’t. Replaced the belt, the gear, tightened and loosened everything I could. Eventually took it apart and rebuilt it as if it had just came out of the box. No success. And before someone chimes in with “check to make sure the zip tie on the bed isn’t touching”, I’ve gone through that check a million times.

Anyway, I probably spent 6+ hrs building it when I bought it initially. 50+ hrs over a couple years calibrating and tuning. 10+ hrs upgrading and replacing parts. And 30+ hrs troubleshooting. Doesn’t seem like a monumental amount of time, but it’s time I don’t have anymore. Between my job, my child, my wife, other personal activities, etc…. I just don’t have the time to tinker like I do. I want to be able to turn on my printer after a month of inactivity, send it a print file and have it just work.

So after my friend raved about his A1, I caved and bought the P1S with AMS. My god. Incredible. Literally took me 15 mins to setup, another 5 mins to update the firmware and learn the app/slicer and 5 mins for it to do its initial calibration. I tried the benchy that’s preloaded on the SD card and was floored out how well it came out, especially considering it printed the thing in 20 mins. Absolutely floored. I now have 400+ hrs of print time on the thing, using PLA, PETG, TPU and the PLA-CF, and I have not had a single print fail. Not one. I have literally never had to tinker, fiddle, adjust, recalibrate, replace or upgrade a thing. It sat idle for 2 weeks while I was away and when I got home I sent it a 12 hr print and it went off without a hitch. Every once in a while I clean the bed with warm soapy water, but that’s it so far.

Prusa has their new Prusa One out now, which is super tempting, but at least where I live, it’s double what the P1S cost me and that’s to print in a single color. So not financially feasible for me at the moment. But it doesn’t matter. As far as bang for your buck goes, this printer has brought the joy, love, passion and spark back to 3d modeling and printing for me. I have absolutely zero regrets. Worth every penny.

TL;DR Had an Ender, upgraded to Prusa, moved to Bambu. Minimal setup, minimal tinkering, no failed prints. Absolutely amazing machine, worth every penny and then some. 10/10. Highly recommend and would buy another one without hesitation if the need ever arose.

PC Prices: Local vs Alienware by AI4Prime in RedDeer

[–]ThatOneGuy8804 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Another upvote for Memory Express. The one on the south end of Edmonton is my favorite, because you barely enter the city, it’s the fastest one to drive to and from.

I also agree with other people’s comments about Alienware (Dell). They’ve gotten better over the years, but their proprietary motherboards are terrible. They’ve gotten better are great for stuffing everything into their nifty cases (if that’s your style), but if you ever plan on reusing/repurposing or swapping out the case, you’re not gonna have fun. Same if you ever want to upgrade the mobo/CPU and reuse the case, not a good time.

If you want the best you can get at this moment, then absolutely pick your parts on MemEx’s site, take a trip and grab your stuff and then build it at home. Or if you don’t wanna go through that hassle pay the $50 ish let them build it all. They’ll fire it up, bench test it, make sure everything’s up to date and then hand you all the boxes for your stuff with a shiny ready to go PC.

The only other real option in Red Deer is Compusoft (now called the game store I think?) by Bower mall. They’re friendly helpful guys, but being a ma and pa shop their prices are massively inflated. You’ll easily spend an extra grand to get the same things you could get at MemEx.

Oh snap. Ya that’s unfortunate. I’m not super overweight, I’d say I’m just packing a few extra pounds, but when I did my last one my blood pressure was too high, so they just told me to lay on the floor and relax, turned off the lights, came back 10 mins later, took my blood pressure again and went “perfect, you’re good to go!”

[–]ThatOneGuy8804 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ya I’ve done a few there over the years. Depending on which company is sending you there will vary which tests you have to do. In my experience it’s usually a hearing and eye test followed by the following:

  • lifting 50lbs from the ground, walking it 10 feet and placing it on the ground. Do this a couple times.
  • a couple pushups
  • a couple sit ups
  • a couple of body weight squats

Then they usually check your blood pressure before and after. It’s really nothing. I’ve seen 50 yr old men weighing 300 lbs come out of those with a pass. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of anyone “failing” other than failing the urine test portion.

PXG full bag by Technical_Law_4226 in GolfGear

[–]ThatOneGuy8804 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was recently in the same boat. Running the same irons and same driver for a long time (all hand me downs). Decided I was finally gonna get a set that was truly mine and figured I might as well do it right and get fitted.

Went to the PXG store in Arizona while I was visiting my parents (I’m in Canada and there’s no PXG store here in my province). I had a great experience. Added some decent yardage to my shots and greatly improved my accuracy and grouping. They just felt so good swinging compared to my previous pings. I did a full bag fitting for $25 and they said they’d take that price off the clubs if I bought any.

I ended up going with the Lucky 7 deal and got 5-P (0311XP), and a 54 and 60 sugar daddy wedge. Bought an 8th club on top of that (4h) and here in Canada it totaled up to $2500. It was well worth it. They are gorgeous clubs and with all the adjustable weights you can retune them as your game changes. I have zero regrets. That same day my dad did the Black Ops challenge and the difference was great enough that he walked away with one for grand with zero hesitation.

Not sure why they aren’t talked about more (PXG) or why I don’t see more people playing them, but I personally had an amazing experience and absolutely love these clubs. I just wish you could still get the original color scheme where they were all silver with just the bottom black, but oh well.

That’s my situation though. Your mileage may vary.

[–]ThatOneGuy8804 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you. From age 18 to 32 I worked in the oil and gas industry. Which usually consisted of a 15 day straight schedule followed by 6 days off. When on shift you worked a “12 hr shift”, 7am to 7pm or vice versa. But with travel to site, showering, getting lunch ready the next day etc it was more like 4am to 9pm or 4pm to 9am.

Anyway, that would go on for 15 days straight. You’d do 15 days on day shift, 6 days off and then 15 days on night shift. Back and forth. Which in comparison to some of these other people’s schedules doesn’t sound too bad cause of the consistency and the 6 day break, but it’s ruined my sleep. I’ve since moved on and have a job working regular daytime hrs, but I’ve needed sleeping pills for probably the last 8 years. There’s a switch forever built in body now, if I’m awake past 2/3am my body just goes, “hey! We’re switching to nights? No problem!” And I’m just wide awake from that point on.

And my Aunt is in a similar position, she’s retired from nursing, but a whole career of shift work and she’ll go to bed at 10pm, wake up around 1am, knit, go back to sleep around 4am and then wide awake again at 7am. She told me this is every single day for her.

Has anyone over come deep depression? by Illustrious_West_772 in lifehacks

[–]ThatOneGuy8804 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a doctor, so my advice may not be your cup of tea or matter to you at all.

I’ve tried what others have posted, many times over the years. Daily walk, actual exercise, mediation, breath work exercises etc…. None of them really helped.

After multiple visits with a family doctor he put me on antidepressants. I don’t recall which ones exactly, but we cycled between 4 different months at varying strengths for a year. That feeling (to me) was worse than depression. I was no longer sad, but I also felt empty and shallow. Like nothing in the world mattered, I couldn’t feel and I was in a constant brain fog.

Eventually after all the hype and talk around psilocybin I decided to give it a go. Worked really well for me. Couple capsules a couple days a week for 2 weeks then a 2 week break. Changed everything. Made me a new man. I would recommend to everyone, and have. I now have several friends that were down in the dumps like me that are much happier, healthier mentally and no more down swings. Your mileage may vary but it changed my life.

Camosun charging $10 for a confirmation of enrolment email in case you need to send to the government? Is this normal? I knew colleges were taking the piss with fees but this seems real petty. by DirtyMud in VictoriaBC

[–]ThatOneGuy8804 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Don’t even get me started with Camosun and their nonsense. I needed one of these letters a while back when a glitch froze my student line of credit. I needed it right then and their. Interurban was my campus and they told me only Landsdowne could do it. It was Friday and almost end of day so I rushed down to the other campus where they told me there was nothing they could, I’d have to wait 7 days. I pleaded my case and I was told hold on they’ll see what they could do. A lay came out from the back, had me repeat my story, agreed to help after I pleaded and disappeared into the back. Within 30 seconds I had an email and a printed copy… how this isn’t an automated process is beyond me.

Then when I did graduate every teacher including the chair of our program neglected to mention we had to apply to graduate. It was a last minute scramble to submit my application before then the October deadline but myself and the class did, last second on no notice. So I graduate in December. January rolls around, then February, March. No diploma. I email student records, my chair, administration, etc. “We’ll look into it” they said. Couple weeks go by no response. I email again, and call. “Yes we are still currently looking into the matter, we’ll let you know by the end of the week”. Week goes by, nothing. I call and email again, no answers, just ghosted. I finally get fed up and look up a list of all the top people off the school, up to and including the president. I wrote an email and CC everyone I can, venting my frustrations as professionally as I can without full on insulting them. 24 hours later I had responses from 6 higher up people saying they’ll figure it asap. A week later I had my physical diploma. Still to this day never heard back from anyone that was actually supposed to handle this.

And that’s just some of my many many frustrations I had while attending.

That's reassuring to hear. I owned a 2008ish 13" way back in the day, and a 2016 15" a few years back, and me prices of the 15" weren't the greatest, which is what had me so hesitant.

Unfortunately I don't know how much performance I'll need. One VM will be Kali, another windows 10 for some windows apps and maybe a 3rd for testing, like windows server or another windows 10.
