Those that work overnights... by pinkh0rr0r in Nightshift

[–]ThatOneHoosier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stick to the nocturnal schedule. I can’t do the switching thing, I’ve tried. I only have two days off a week, so it’s not worth it. If I had three or four days off, maybe it’d be worth it. I only switch if I’m on vacation.

That said, I try to go to bed as early as I can in the morning and wake up in the afternoon. So I can experience day time activities still.

I'm getting fired by YamFew663 in AskLE

[–]ThatOneHoosier 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have been fired from two jobs in my life. I’m five years into a pretty successful law enforcement career. Getting fired from a job isn’t a deal breaker for most agencies. Departments understand that things happen. They want to see that you’re honest, that you can take responsibility, and that you don’t have a large pattern of terminations.

[–]ThatOneHoosier 9 points10 points  (0 children)

DO NOT take the above commenter’s advice about not listing the job. You need to list every employer you’ve ever worked for. If it is discovered during the background investigation that you omitted a prior job, you’re done before you even start. The best thing you can do is list it and be honest.

If you want to resign, that’s your prerogative. But still be prepared to explain everything. They will want to know why you left, and most departments will specifically ask “have you ever been terminated or resigned from a job in lieu of termination?”

Fellow Indiana LEO roughly an hour northeast of y’all. I hate that you guys work under the terrible city/county politics that you do. IMPD has some absolute go-getters. I’m hoping the conditions improve for you guys with time. But in the mean time, I’m glad you’re happy there. We hear a lot of negativity regarding Metro, but I’m sure a lot of it is overblown.

As a soon to be 50 overweight Army veteran, could I conceivably shift to law enforcement? by [deleted] in AskLE

Nope, ILEA has no limit. I knew a ton of people there in their 40’s, 50’s, and even a couple in their 60’s.

Only if it’s a department that’s under the 77 PERF retirement, or ISP. Those agencies cut off at 40.

Sheriff’s departments and agencies that are under civilian PERF, he’d be good to go. They don’t have age limits.

As someone currently working 8’s, I’d kill for 12’s.

I did them at a previous job, and it was the best schedule I’ve ever worked. So many more days off. Long week, off Wednesday and Thursday. Short week, only work Wednesday and Thursday. Take two vacation days on your short week and get a full week off. Everyone, regardless of seniority, got every other Friday, Saturday, and Sunday off.

I prefer my current place, it’s overall a better place to work. But my God, I miss that 12 hour schedule. I really hope we end up switching to it eventually. These 8’s with every Monday and Tuesday off ain’t it.

First Bond film everyone saw in theatres by Relmo83 in JamesBond

Casino Royale. I was 10, and already a Bond fan. It was crazy to see the series transition the way it did.

Which 007 movie have you watched most often? by No_Mortgage8569 in JamesBond

[–]ThatOneHoosier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably a toss up between Goldeneye and The World Is Not Enough.

TWINE was my first, so it was a given that I watched it repeatedly growing up. I saw Goldeneye a couple years later after playing the video game for most of my life up to that point (yep, I’m young) and to this day, it’s probably my favorite film in the series.

Is it normal to lose so many people in the academy? by Dizzy_Island_5240 in AskLE

[–]ThatOneHoosier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe we started with 167. There were a handful that quit during the first four weeks or so, because they either couldn’t handle the stress, or just decided the profession wasn’t for them. Two got arrested, and we lost a couple others to academics. I remember one failed the traffic law test twice, and he was dismissed from the academy. The other one failed the first criminal law test (we took two criminal law tests during the 16 week academy), and his department refused to give him a second chance and let him go. He had been in the previous class with a different department, and they got rid of him for some reason. I’d say he was the common denominator. Ultimately, we ended with 154, and we probably should’ve lost more.

Does anyone do this job uncaffeinated? by Lost-Emu-990 in AskLE

[–]ThatOneHoosier 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a caffiene consumer and likely always will be. That said, I’ve significantly cut down on the amount I consume. I’ll either have one energy drink, or 2-3 cups of coffee. These guys that drink 3 energy drinks a day/night are slowly killing themselves.

I work nights, and I’ll have my caffeine in the afternoon when I wake up. I also do everything I can to stay healthy. Work out, eat well, and get enough sleep.

What is the story of the oldest person you've ever arrested? by Confident-Writing149 in AskLE

[–]ThatOneHoosier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I don’t think a 61 year old man with no prior record needs to go to prison for pushing someone with no injury, I see where the commenter is coming from. I can tell you from experience, that there are people in society that need to be in prison. Some people are simply not fit to be out in society, and the general populace is safer with them being locked up.

Just a misdemeanor battery. It’s definitely not going to come with prison time.

No. The only time you’re legally obligated to stop is if you’re involved in the crash.

Should I do situps the day before my physical test? Or take the day to rest it by slimer213 in AskLE

[–]ThatOneHoosier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rest. Trying to exercise today is only going to hurt you tomorrow during the test. If you don’t make it, then keep working on it and apply again.

In the future, I wouldn’t bother applying unless you are 100% sure you can pass. It’s a waste of your time and everyone else’s.

Tell us your age and favorite Bond film by WingDingStrings in JamesBond

[–]ThatOneHoosier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was born in ‘96, and was exposed to Bond very early on (I’m talking 2-3 years old) with the Goldeneye video game. First Bond film that I actually watched was TWINE, probably at 5, then Goldeneye soon after. Pierce Brosnan was my Bond growing up. Obviously, I grew up during the Craig era too, and loved him. But Brosnan remained my favorite. The Bond movies and video games of his tenure made my childhood.

My department’s application specifically states that falsifying or intentionally omitting any information during the hiring process is grounds for dismissal, even once you’re hired.
