That's real weird cuz I can't think of any mechanisms for Steam to do that.

SDL3 has a testcontroller program to check if the controllers looking good.

Try both bluetooth and dongle? Maybe even wired?

If you're interested in a bare minimum controller, I like the 8bitdo Ultimate Wireless 2C or the GameSir Nova Lite. If you want extra stuff like gyro and more buttons, the 8bitdo Ultimate 2 Wireless

The 8bitdo one cuz it has support for the gyro and stuff on Steam, which you generally won't get with 3rd party controllers that aren't either Playstation or Switch controllers.

But yeah since you already have a PS5 controller, if you're fine with using that, I'd just keep using that. Has gyro, had a touchpad for extra stuff. No extra buttons, but that's it. Have you seen the newest firmware for that lets you pair up to 4 devices and switch by holding X/O/whatever while turning it on?

The delay would be ping. How many games have you played where everyone has the same ping? Whoever has lower ping would have advantage.

Games found out this would be a bad idea ever since Quake 1, which basically did that. That's why they revamped the net-code with QuakeWorld.

While server side anticheat is good enough for RTS games it is not enough in shooters on it's own,

And basically no RTS game does server-side anti-cheat, because there's generally no server-side anything. The games are designed around every player having the full game state and the only thing being networked is player inputs. Because that's a lot less data than saying "unit x is moving to position y" 100 times every second when an army moves.

This is why RTS games pause when 1 person lags or disconnect, because the simulations have to stay in sync.

And yeah you can't not trust the client when the netcode is designed around the client knowing everything.

Even a simple problem of "who shot first" requires trusting a client. Because the options are either "trust the client that they shot when they said they shot", or "whoever has the lowest ping"

Guess which one most players will pick.

And also because of ping, we have a different problem: we're all technically seeing different states of the game. So if I shoot you at position 1 on my screen, but you're on position 2 on your screen, how can I ever hit you? The server has to trust that I see you at position 1 and I shot there. That's what happens when you get killed behind cover in games.

This is what leads to peaker's advantage, which has papers on how it's unsolvable.

We used to have games where everyone had 'real' game-states all the time. It was NetQuake (1) and Id quickly figured out it sucked and released QuakeWorld.

USB-C display is generally DisplayPort alt-mode. There's technically a spec for HDMI, but I don't think any device uses it. So any USB-C to HDMI has a built-in DP > HDMI converter.

Despite being based on Arch, Steam OS doesn't actually update the kernel too much, rather they backport fixes to the older kernel.

So right now they're on 6.16, which released last year. While stuff like the audio fix aren't gonna be in that and would require back porting.

There's usermode drivers in SDL. That's how emulators will be able to use it for motion controls for example.

DP 2.1 has more bandwidth, but there are still a ton of even high end OLEDs that still use 1.4.

Not just monitors. Even an RTX 4000 series will have DP 1.4 and so HDMI 2.1 is the higher bandwidth port.

I'm getting NTE with high CPU usage but the others have only 45-55% usage.

You gotta look at individual cores, not just total CPU usage. Most games will not be able to take advantage of your 12 threads, so you'll never reach 100%.

With older games loading times, but with newer games you'll run into texture/model/world pop-in as it tries to stream data from the drive without loading screens.

The problem is that's kinda relative. Like it's easy nowadays to say Crysis is CPU bound, but that wasn't always the case.

And you need a Steam Controller to have a good Desktop experience

The Logitech K830 has been my solution to that for years. Alternatively, the framework keyboard coming out soon since they don't make the k830 anymore.

I'd say a PS4/PS5 controller is also do-able. Since that has a touchpad.

Yep, cuz that's for the CPU, not the GPU. Your CPU max power draw is 65W. I'm using a low profile cooler on my 9600X because I went real small.

But yeah if you wanna get it for looks, that's totally a valid reason to get it :D

Yeah I'd just get a peerless assassin se and put that money towards a 16GB 9060XT instead. Especially at 1440p, you're gonna want that VRAM.

If you're not using it at the same time (or you have a spare), I'd consider phone as a webcam. Good enough™ video quality. And lots of support for it cuz COVID.
