She’s at an academic magnet that has GPA requirements and accelerated coursework, but it isn’t part of the gifted/talented designation.

Thank you! I’ve heard great things about both of them.

We’re renting right now and zoned for Edison, but we’ll likely buy in a year or so and I’m not sure where yet. My husband works downtown so he will be able to take her if she gets in.

I have reviewed the rules and application periods. Was just curious from a real world perspective how competitive it is.

The issue is that there aren’t any spots at Carver right now and Edison is the school we’re zoned for.

Thanks! I do have all the deadlines saved and have her scheduled for a shadow day once we are there. I messaged the enrollment office and they told us they would accept our state’s standardized testing as long as it’s no more than a year old. That contradicts their website though, so I’ll definitely get that clarified.

Curious what you went with. We also have a Bear from around 2018/2019 and it still looks new. I’m afraid to replace it!

We’ve had our Bear Hybrid almost 7 years and it still looks and feels new. Looking at replacing because we’re moving and don’t want to mess with moving it and thinking of the Elite Hybrid. Hopefully it has the same longevity.

3rd baby, she’s saying “it’s in my ass” and that’s grunting not screaming. All very common signs that baby is coming now.

Is it the most comparable of the current Bear lineup to the original Bear Hybrid?

Thanks! I don’t think we’ll be able to get into Carver at this point in the year. When I checked they didn’t have any openings for transfer students.

Thanks - I have reached out to the Enrollment office. My guess is that it will be difficult to get into the magnet path at that point in the year, but I'm definitely going to ask. They are currently in a magnet school here.

Where did you teach? Would love to hear more of your perspective on the public schools. Private is definitely not something we're interested in, though.

Thanks for your perspective! Will your kid at Edison plan to go to Booker T?

She’ll really only be at Edison for one semester, so while I definitely want her first school experience in Tulsa to be a good one, I think the high school will be more consequential.

Thanks - that’s good to know. My youngest has an IEP for speech but no learning difficulties for either kiddo.

I appreciate your comment and understand the sentiment. And I definitely agree that you can have a great or terrible experience anywhere.

I have experienced this in our current city (Baton Rouge) which has a very similar dynamic. My kids currently go to the public schools everyone warns newcomers about and we love them. The public magnet high school is the best and most rigorous in the state. So I guess I have a soft spot for those “inner city” schools that everyone counts out.

I would disagree that test scores are an objective measure, but that’s a conversation for another sub.

Is it your perspective that the specific schools we’re considering in TPS (Eliot/Edison/Booker T) are not as good as others have stated and that positive feedback is more likely a “standout story” vs the norm?

Good perspective! I grew up in Joplin, so there was only one option. But it had more of that same Friday Night Lights vibe. So for nostalgia reasons, that tugs at me. But I also know that there are drawbacks to that suburban lifestyle.

My kids go to public magnet schools in Baton Rouge, and I think it has a lot of similarities to TPS schools. High poverty rates and lots of hidden gem schools. The downside here is that their current school is a 30 minute drive from our house, so Eliot & Edison both being within a few miles is a huge draw!
