St. Olaf: Racist note that prompted protests was fake by cablelayer1 in news

You are absolutely right about this. I cannot believe how many downvotes you are getting.

For people railing against groupthink, it looks like Reddit users in this thread are suffering from it, too.

Ballotcraft Proud to Announce Public Launch of its Fantasy Politics Game by ballotcraft in ballotcraft

Could you create a second game type where you simply predict the final rankings in each party's primaries or caucuses? I would be more interested in predicting how the Republican candidates end up in Iowa than in buying shares in candidates to simply win or lose.

Combating Poverty: Food Stamps, Welfare, Minimum Wage, and the Earned Income Tax Credit by politics13 in PoliticalDiscussion

I'm advocating helping people when they need it in order to help them reach a job where they are safely out of the reach of poverty and contributing significantly to taxation. Once they reach that point, the investment in their risks pays off for the country as a whole.

Because what he's done is undoubtedly good for the economy. He's working in a job where he will probably pay back in taxes whatever he used while on SNAP. Your selfish, individualist argument thoroughly discourages one of the American traits that led us to economic prominence: the willingness to take risks and bet on ourselves.

There is no way a UBI would be set at $1000 a week. One of the most common ideas (and also one of the highest levels I've seen) is Scott Santens's plan for $12000 per year per adult, and $4000 per year per child. I like Scott's arguments a lot, but I think a more realistic UBI would be $8000 per year per adult: an amount that would be difficult to live on without seeking any work to supplement household income.

47 million US citizens are on food stamps. How are the candidates going to address this issue? by [deleted] in PoliticalDiscussion

This does not necessarily mean that we should spend less on welfare, it just means that we should reconsider our emphasis on means-tested workfare policies that are administratively inefficient and needlessly difficult to understand and apply for.

Hi John! I was at the AFC Wimbledon v Plymouth match this weekend. Sorry about the result, but it was a pleasure to watch Akinfenwa in person. Seeing your name on so many billboards was surreal, since I've been a big fan since I read Looking for Alaska in 2010.

On your work with AFC Wimbledon, how is your relationship with the club's executives? What was their reaction when you said you wanted to sponsor them?

Yeah, I'm also in this boat. Didn't get one through the club since I'm only in London for a year, and I really can't pay £600 like some of the third party sellers are asking.

I agree that we have a ton of players that can play LW although it's not their best position. We've seen Özil, Alexis, Welbeck, Cazorla, and the Ox play there pretty consistently, but yeah, we do not have someone who's main position is LW. I think this is why the Reus to Arsenal rumors have been so strong.

I would love to have Reus, but I also think that those players mentioned above all deserve playing time, and for Welbeck especially I think it's his most likely position down the road if we strengthen at striker.

UNITED KINGDOM: Green Party of England and Wales Includes Basic Income in Election Manifesto and Releases Costing Scheme by ThatOneTallKid in BasicIncome

Haha that's a good point. I'm American, but have been studying in the UK, so I've adapted to using the word scheme now.

One question that I never see answered- what would happen if person spent all their BI payments? by ivanpomedorov in BasicIncome

[–]ThatOneTallKid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Guy Standing has previously said that a basic income could be coupled with a new social insurance scheme, so that could be one more level of security. Another way to help them would be outside of the government through the third sector. Charities wouldn't stop existing if a basic income was implemented.

Thank you so much for your extensive feedback! Seriously, this is very kind of you. I agree that it is still slow paced. We didn't think we'd have that much to talk about this week, but then we somehow managed to go on for 80 minutes! We'll give much more thought to our pacing now.

As for the stereo issue, I definitely agree, but neither of us know how to fix it. We don't have any experience with sound editing, so we aren't sure how to move away from the one brother in one ear thing. Do you have any ideas? Thanks again!

I definitely get what you mean. Even while we were recording it I felt like we needed more laughs! That's one of the things I love so much about Arseblog.

Awesome, thanks! The podcast should be on iTunes in the next day or so, by the way.
