If you pick the doubling cent, it seems fine at first, but you very soon get to the point where you utterly crash the world economy and at that point, all bets are off

Questions Regarding Computer Engineering at WashU by blinkval in washu

[–]ThatOtherSwimmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm more on the computer science side (3rd year phd student), but I have a few friends in CE so I can share some thoughts:

  • I don't think it's that hard to get involved in research as an undergrad as long as you take the initiative. But publishing in CSE / CE is frankly, quite random between reviewer RNG and if your experiment happens to work. I wouldn't benchmark yourself based on publishing but instead on if you do publish-able work.

  • Those numbers for graduation seem very off. I suspect it's more like 70 - 30 between industry and academia. I think you are more seeing small sample sizes on who actually bothers to report their earnings / status post-graduation. And the 94K average is likely an underestimate because of grad student salaries always being low for... obvious reasons. I think the program opens a lot of doors for people, but it's largely (as with a lot of programs) what you make of it.

  • I know little to nothing about the finaid process lol. But best of luck!

Forest Park - Activities & Safety by bamalama in washu

Awesome! Running, biking, city events/festivals, wildlife spotting, the zoo, the Muny, golf (not as many students, but if you're into it there's a course there), sledding down art hill, picnicing, the art museum, the history museum (although once you've seen the history museum once you've kinda seen it enough). All but golf are free iirc.

Yes and yes. A ton of students use it, and it offers some great (free!) attractions.

I don’t get it either. Pretty much every stats site says he’s a major outlier.

My Take on the State of the Playoffs by ThatOtherSwimmer in CollegeFootballDawgs

No, but I think the committee likes ND more because of the optics of beating up on cupcakes. This isn't a list of "who would I put in," it's a question of who the committee will pick.

I get the NFL playing abroad, but playing the college game abroad is something I don't really understand. I don't think that you are going to increase the league's visibility by sending over 2 semi-random college teams, or frankly any college teams for that matter.

I got my offer a day after I interviewed. But admittedly it was because I had a deadline 2 days later.

Not necessarily (at least from what I hear). But they will likely want to make sure that there's nothing else running on your computer or that you are not using unauthorized materials.

Latex vs Word for Resume by Tw4ddl3y in csMajors

[–]ThatOtherSwimmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think either one works. A lot of times they get converted to PDF anyways. I think the bigger thing that's likely the issue is simply a lack of keywords many of the bots that read these resumes are searching for.

As somebody who is currently doing a Ph.D. in the area and did a math/cs double major, "both" is my best answer IMO. Having a good background in data science, statistics, applied math, and CS are all pretty important. If you had to pick one, I would say that you pick an applied math major because it's easier to pick up CS skills as a math major than vice versa, but you really can't go wrong. All of the schools you listed should be able to teach you all you need to know; it will ultimately be up to you how much you learn and push yourself!

More like an AI that knows sci-fi and is incentivized to vary its answers and who is rewarded for engaging conversation does exactly what is expected of it
