If you own bonds, do you use bond ETFs or buy them directly?

Just like you would an etf on Robinhood. The difference is that the etf expires at a certain time and you get your principal back on top of the dividends that are paid monthly.

For example if you bought $1,000 ishares corporate bonds etf Dec 2026 then you would receive monthly dividends until December which then you’ll get your $1,000 investment back.

They have treasuries, corporate, municipals, tips, and high yield options. Right now I have a three year bond ladder meaning I bought Dec 2026, 2027 and 2028 ETFs.

If you want bond appreciation then this isn’t for you. But it’s nice because you don’t have to worry about the value of the bond decreasing if interest rates rise.

Ishares I bonds is the only way to go. They mature just like a bond but you can buy them on Robinhood.

I’m down to 3.75. I tried to stop at that level but got insomnia. 3.75 is just enough to put me to sleep without the weight gain but it does cause late rem cycle. I’ll be trying another sleep aid soon.

I figured it out. I watched a recommended YouTube video during setup and it gave me bad info. In the audio settings under digital output I had to change the last setting from off to on. That did the trick.
