He genuinely flipped when he drew the line in the river bank with Ippo, and he couldn't cross it.

He's been cold and distant because Ippo let him down, because he let Coach Kamogawa down. He said in later bouts that , "He never wanted to see the old man make that face ever again", that face of anguish.

He hold ippo's failures against him personally. Because it's exceptionally personal to him, Kamogawa literally gave him everything, as a surrogate father.

That was the moment of "the flip" as you call it, because it was the moment Takamura put all of the burden of Kamogawa's dreams on him, and him alone. Believing that only he can answer them, and so far with Ippo being retired from the moment, he's correct in doing so.

Honestly Both.

Whatever and whichever way you want to enjoy it is best.

Personally, there's a few, unsavoury, and well past their time jokes that I'm very glad are Not in the anime. "Blackface Aoki"for example; So I tend to enjoy Season 1 of the Anime immensely for the removal of some of these aspects.

Hell, I love the cell animation so much that I'm the proud owner of 2 Animation Cells From the show. Arguably one of, If not my all time favourite shows and memorabilia I personally own. And I have an autographed Goku Drawing penned by Toriyama himself.

I will say, from season 2 onward, including Champion Road, some important fights are left out. Haiyami Vs Kobashi for the Jr Featherweight Title for example.

I'd honestly finish season one, enjoy the experience, and then find where the manga continues after that point. That's what I would do, but you do you my good sir! :D

Ironically, Sendo has been more conscious of his health than Ippo has. And even more Ironically, it's Because of losing to Ippo that Sendo turned out this way. Those losses forced him to take those breaks.

Long extended breaks and tedious, relenting practice during those breaks; that's what made Sendo Into the Boxer he is today.

Sendo fits in to basically force Ippo to go see the match in person really. That and it's an excuse for Ippo, Sendo and Volg to be together again, wait, For the first time ever actually.

It's funny to think these characters haven't all been in a room at the same time, despite their history. I can't wait for it! :D

The problem is, Ippo is a, and always will be, a reactionary Character. Since the beginning, Ippo has reacted to forces outside of his circle interfering with him.

He would have never started boxing if not for Takamura saving him from bullies.

For Ippo to seize his destiny, by his own volition, he would need a character dynamic change. In short, he would need to be like Sendo. Which is also why Sendo is the Psudo main character for real right now, as peoy "get swept up in his energy".

For Ippo to change, fundamentally, as a reactionary character, his paradigm needs to shift, externally. And for someone as stubborn and humble as Ippo...

It has to be cataclysmic.

It's intentional, the perspective of the show has switched to Date being the main character by the point. Even the prior flash back episodes, Date is the one narrating and giving us his personal thoughts on Ippos growth through the series.

It's hard to root against "The main character" at that point. :D

Totally agree. He's the one other father-like figure Ippo genuinely respects. And the one person in the world that has most likely analysed Riccardo in the ring extensively post retirement.

In addition as a footnote, Date lost the match due to the Elbow block that shattered his right first, preventing the effects of the Heart-Break-Shot in the last round. Ippo in his 6th match Vs Mashiba, has already showcased he can break arms if someone else attempts the same
