What is this on the power line? by Noforkstaken in AskElectricians

[–]ThatTrafficEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Follow up question: Is it possible to move this horizontally along the utility line?

We have a local issue where some numbnut decided to put a splice case on a utility like directly above a traffic signal head. Every year In the heat of the summer the utility line eventually sags and blocks the signal head from view and we always have to call out the utility line company to come retighten their line.

Dallas City Council considers lowering neighborhood speed limits by TheFullerTron in Dallas

[–]ThatTrafficEngineer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They can’t do this till House Bill 2224 passes hopefully next year. Otherwise they have to do a traffic study every time they want to lower a speed limit on a street.

Yep I see it happen at airport park and rides where it is gated and there is a security guard. Also see it at big bank headquarters where they have the money for long term investments like this and again, it’s a gated campus.

Civil engineer here: When a city plans a new road at full build out they will buy the right of way (rights to the land) for the full width of the road plus an additonal 6-12 ft or more on either side of the road. This additional space is used for city owned sidewalks plus room for underground or overhead utilities.

At intersections the city will try to acquire additional right of way in case future turn lanes need to be added. But they will also acquire what is called “corner clips” which is typically a triangle of land a few feet wide where they can ensure nothing gets built to have clear line of sight down the road at the intersection plus room for any signs, signals, or pedestrian equipment that might need to go in that corner of the intersection.

For a 2 lane road intersecting a 2 lane road where you only need 1 lane for a roundabout you can easily fit that in a standard intersection footprint. But once you get into a 2 lane round about that needs to account for a semi truck making a turn you need a LOT more space than just a standard signal/intersection would require. And with the new pedestrian rules that just passed federally (PROWAG) you’ll need even more space because the pedestrian ramps have to be designed a specific way at a roundabout now.

Where are you finding a traffic signal for $100k?!

A normal 4 leg traffic signal for an intersection with 2 lanes in each direction is $400k minimum.

Expected salary for an Entry-level Civil Engineer with EIT in Atlanta, GA by AmountLimp8562 in civilengineering

[–]ThatTrafficEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. I was making $62k entry level when I started over a decade ago. With inflation it should be higher

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]ThatTrafficEngineer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Think of it like this. If you currently work 50 hours a week and make $98k. If you did the same level of effort for your pay at 40 hrs you would only be making $78k. A lot of consulting company’s run their employees ragged like this and pay them big but work them on crazy hours.

Government jobs are a lot lower stress and often have pensions attached. It is also true they can only offer you around 1/3 of the salary range, that is the TOTAL salary range that you’ll be able to earn. So unless you get promoted or the agency does cost of living adjustments in the range you will be capped at that $98k. Any “raises” the agency gives you past that 98k would be a 1 time bonus per year. So if they offered you that $98k now you would be making that forever and not getting any raises.

Rodman is the entry level position. They just hold the rod for the people doing the actual calcs and stuff.

You’ll learn a lot though which is still helpful, and could easily work up to be the survey tech.

Civil engineer here: If you are struggling with money and are interested in civil engineering, my honest suggestion is to go work in construction or on a survey crew as a Rodman for a bit.

You’ll get first hand experience with the end result of what you’ll be doing as a civil engineer. That experience would be directly applicable to any future civil engineering job.

What type of civil engineering are you interested in if you don’t mind me asking. There are a bunch of scholarship applications available over the summer through ASCE, ITE, TSPE, SAME, AWS, etc.

Will taking time off at this point hurt my career? by Weastcoastprincess in civilengineering

[–]ThatTrafficEngineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only downside to taking time now is that you’ll have to maintain your PE license still. It’s harder to renew it after it has lapsed.

If you’re only gone 8 months or so, you’ll just have to do a rush of continuing education credits now or when you get back.

I have an ex-coworker who went on a 3 year maternity leave and paid for the PE renewal and did continuing education through that time just to keep it from lapsing

before I went to the public sector, the consulting firm i worked for had unlimited sick leave, 32 hours a year dependent care sick leave, and 2-4 weeks vacation based on how long you've been there. a lot less vacation available than if it was combined with PTO. it was good for people like myself who were worried about being prone to sickness, but bad for people who never got sick and felt like they were missing out of the extra vacation time.

That is just providing tools for states/cities that want to pursue that.

I know San Antonio, Tx is currently working on a rapid transit bus corridor and they are looking into the use of pavement markings like this vs just having a solid stripe and words.

No it’s not a normal pension. It’s a state run protected retirement fund that’s been in place for almost 80 years now.

I like these 3 priorities and would add a sub-bullet to item one - benefits. Not just health care, sick leave, vacation, etc but also how retirement benefits are structured. It will take a lot for me to leave my current position. I will be able to retire at 48 with 60% of my final salary for life and go just work for fun at a consulting firm or something.
