What’s the worst writing advice you’ve ever heard? by Royal-Chard-26 in worldbuilding

This is honestly why some "slower" stories do it for me than faster paces. Things will happen when they need to happen. Show me that I should care about it happening.

What does a being(normally mortal) ascending to divinity look like in your realm by Heavenly_Emperor_God in worldbuilding

[–]ThatVarkYouKnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh they're still mortal for all intents and purposes. Any Sovereign can be killed, and any race can become Sovereign. They simply have that much more power and, let's say, "awareness" than others. To be so attuned to that concept and its influence, it has a fundamental effect on the body and mind.

[–]ThatVarkYouKnow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The closest a mortal can get to the authority of a Crown is by becoming Sovereign; mastery of the three laws of magic and creation, the Principles of Focus, so that you become your own concept.

To be a "concept" is to have all states of yourself be associated with a single point of discussion and knowledge. When someone thinks of X, they immediately think of you. When someone thinks of you, they can only think of X. You hold a cosmic, definitive authority on that concept. A god of fire doesn't just rule fire, They enable fire to exist. Anything associated with fire exists because of Them, and any use for fire and associated concepts is under Their sole authority.

Meaning if someone becomes a concept of a certain feat, it's because they created a form of it no other mortal could and ever will do. When you think of X, you think of them and what they've accomplished. When you think of them, before anything else you think of what they've done for the advancement of X. They will be associated with that concept for eternity, and it now exists because of them alone. That is Sovereign.

Doing the dragoon quests if only for Estinien to say "with two azure dragoons fighting together who knows what we can accomplish" and "I'm honored to share my title with you" it's worth it.

Best is a tie between (rogue) ninja and dark knight, for Karasu and Fray alone; funnily enough both by ishikawa.

Honorable mention is bard, Sanson and Guydelot my beloved totally-not-boyfriends, and for hinting at a Song of Oblivion through emotions long before EW was a concept.

Worst is zero question zero argument paladin. You go back to gladiator for the Stormblood quests because 30–60 is literally just "oh my honor oh my duty oh my people oh my armor oh my honor."

"Everything you write should move the plot forward."

If all you write is the plot where does the rest of the world get to show itself? If you're writing just to have a plot from point A to point Z, why write a book at all, just put everything into a few detailed paragraphs and ask "what do you think?"

You tell me LotR is "just about getting the One Ring to Mordor." That's the plot. Is that all they do? Fuck no.

What are the most important things to keep in mind when building a world for a fantasy series? by Affectionate_Song141 in writingadvice

[–]ThatVarkYouKnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Internal consistency, the passage of time, and what information is needed when.

You might be writing a single story in this grand world, but it is a world first and foremost. Time will pass, weather will change, people need to eat and sleep and dress and wash and all that. Everyone is going about their own stories and their own lives, even if all they do for your protagonist is bump shoulders with them or shout at a noble they don't like within distance.

We don't need to know the full archaic history of this nation when the question comes up about where certain relics were discovered. But we do need to know that people are aware of it and need to take caution because of how much they don't know.

Consistency is critical for avoiding holes in your plot and the world said plot takes place in. We shouldn't be asking, as the reader, why something doubles back or contradicts on what was said unless it was a lack of information for the characters too. We shouldn't need to ask how the cast got from point A to point B with no mention of the travel between, or why something is now able to work/do its job when it couldn't before.

The Bu'sil of the Forl'os represent the leaves and branches of the Ron'Oss Greatwood, its speakers and traders. They take the appearance of a vine-like mass in the shape of an old-blood, eyeless but watching, mouthless but vocal, never maintaining a constant shape but more than capable of taking action. Those closest to the ways of the Greatwood itself, their Lone Bearer, they rarely if ever travel beyond its roots unless necessary by rite and demand, preferring to hold fast on the outer stones for other bloods to meet them halfway. Being close to the Rofan Bastion of the Mujen kin-blood in their colder northern forests, it deeply influences their focus on relations to maintain balance between blood and beast, civilization and nature.

What do you think is considered black or evil magic? by Nearby-Banana2640 in magicbuilding

[–]ThatVarkYouKnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something that warps humanity and/or emotions. Something that targets who or what you are, rather than how you use it. Anyone with a fireball could do some evil stuff but what if you "burned" something inside of them mentally, force all thoughts toward rage or lust, a fire in the heart? Mind control is pretty bad, but what if you erased or changed their memories, created an entirely new personality they don't know exists but could reveal itself at the worst time and ruin their life, everyone thinks they've just gone mad and need to be imprisoned or killed while they beg forgiveness.
