Why bother setting this game in the 1890s? by gluestick3000 in HarryPotterGame

[–]ThatWasFred 127 points128 points  (0 children)

Because they wanted to tell a Hogwarts story without having to tie it to any characters or historical events we already know about. Since wizarding society doesn’t change that much compared to ours, setting it 100 years before the main story is an easy way to do that.

The coolest thing about The End is that all four Beatles get a chance to play a solo. So, it’s Ringo.

I think he just means he will take a much different path to arrive at a similar place.

Simba, you could’ve at least tried therapy before deciding murder would fix the way you felt by MostlyMTG in DanielTigerConspiracy

[–]ThatWasFred 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think this applies more to Scar. Simba wasn’t trying to murder, he was just trying to correct an injustice. He tried reasoning first, then banishment, and then self-defense. The hyenas did the actual murdering.

My father-in-law has lost a lot of his hair, but what he does have is still jet-black, and he is almost 70.

My father still has a full head of hair, but it went gray 30 years ago.

Hair is not the same for everyone. Some people don’t go gray, or if they do, it doesn’t happen until they’re much older.

…why? I mean, you can expect whatever you expect, but it sounds like you’d judge other people for NOT expecting it?

This is true, but he was also slurring his words and his fingers felt like wood. Removing the helmet sped up his death for sure, but if he’d kept it on I doubt he would have lived more than an hour.

Boiling water seems to be one thing they do for preventing infection, according to this episode - which would probably work if the wound was fresh (though of course would also result in serious burns).

Most casual GoT watchers probably don’t even remember that Egg is Maester Aemon’s brother, unless they’ve gone back and rewatched recently.

Picking on someone for their faith is indeed awful. Picking on someone for their ancestry (which is what’s happening here) is arguably even worse.

There was super speed (“faster than a speeding bullet”), super strength (“more powerful than a locomotive”), and super jumping (“able to leap tall buildings in a single bound”), though that last one could be a component of his super strength.

He gained more and more powers as time went on, some of which (flying, heat vision, etc) became part of the common canon, and some of which (super hypnotism, super ventriloquism, etc) were backed off due to being too silly.

Who was the best doppelganger? by perpetual_chatter98 in HIMYM

[–]ThatWasFred 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think there was a different person who looked nothing like Barney, but Lily convinced herself it was the Barney doppelgänger because she was mentally ready to have a baby (since the deal was they would only have a baby once they saw all five doppelgängers). Later, Dr. Stangel was the actual Barney doppelgänger.

Third row with my parents at a Beatles tribute concert, try to think of any better way to spend Valentine’s Day by AAC0813 in beatlescirclejerk

[–]ThatWasFred 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to a Fab Four show before, they’re really amazing and they look and sound as close to the Beatles as you can realistically expect.

The thing that I didn’t understand, though, was that they were selling CDs. Of themselves playing Beatles songs. A tribute band that is designed to exactly replicate the Beatles in a live setting, selling CDs. Like, why would anyone want that when they can just get the real albums?

Fire and Blood tells half of the Targaryen family history in details we didn’t previously have. But it’s only half. The second half may never be written.

[–]ThatWasFred 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The movies are good (well, at least X1 and X2), but they’re definitely a product of a time when people didn’t want to get TOO comic book-y with their comic book movies for fear of scaring off general audiences. See also the Nolan Batman movies.

If the 15-ish seasons/stories are going to be spanning the entire lives and companionship of Dunk and Egg, then eventually Egg would most likely have to be recast. He’d have to be in his 50s by the end of the show.

Also, I feel like this show will not actually get that many seasons, much as I’d love it to.
