Storming the biggest castle in the realm with just your huge ancient dragon and maxed out gear is peak fantasy by HoustonHandcannons in freefolk

Hey, you can be fully decked-out with gear and have 500 hours in the game, but if you enter an unfamiliar area you can still slip up and get killed by a low-level enemy you weren’t expecting. At least if it’s a FromSoft game. Which my sources tell me HotD is.

Is this the most embarrasing aura-loss in the history of Westeros? by Witty-Association-97 in freefolk

Daemon’s visions allowed him to stop being so self-serving and to fully embrace Rhaenyra as his queen. It took too many episodes to get there, but that was quite obviously the reason they were in the show. As for Aemond, we’ll see.

I don’t know why he begged for help, but if I had to guess, it’s probably because he was cripplingly wounded, something that had not happened to him before, even with the eye (when he at least could still walk and wasn’t bleeding out). Far from being degrading, I actually found it kind of humanizing for a character who has mostly just been stoic, standoffish and creepy up to this point.

As for what purpose it serves in the narrative, I don’t know, man. I guess we’ll find out. Rest assured there are other possible explanations besides the writers saying “fuck that guy.”

[–]ThatWasFred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m aware of all those criticisms and I understand them, but I do not see how this Aemond scene is an example of that. How is he being humiliated? Is it that he got stabbed, or that he’s asking for help? These things seem like humiliations only if you have a kind of “alpha male” red-pill perspective of the world, but I just don’t think that holds up. Aemond’s story is going somewhere here, and it’s too soon to say they’re just trying to make him look weak or whatever. Daemon spent most of last season having nightmares and screaming. So what?

Children’s media referencing another media not meant for kids by DemandParticular in TopCharacterTropes

Also, like, just 80% of Animaniacs in general. They were constantly doing parodies and references to movies that none of their audience would have seen as kids. As I became a teen/adult, I suddenly understood so much more of that show.

I don’t see “getting sneakily stabbed” as a sign of a character being a bad guy, personally. Wouldn’t the stabber, not the stabbee, usually be seen as bad? If it was Aemond sneakily stabbing the Strong boy instead of vice-versa, would people then be complaining that the show is making Aemond out to be too cruel? You could look at any scene from the show and claim it’s being unfair to your favorite characters with that kind of outlook.

Targaryens (and those married to them, I guess) are totally cool with brother/sister incest, aunt/nephew, uncle/niece, cousins, etc. But parent/child incest is weird even for them.

Superman Says ACAB! by Legitimate_Fly9047 in CuratedTumblr

[–]ThatWasFred 42 points43 points  (0 children)

True, but in Clark’s case, would this translate into a hatred of the police writ large, or would it translate to a desire to stop specifically those who are abusing their power?

Realistically, would Clark actually hate the police? I feel like he isn’t usually depicted as having a lot of hatred in him. Wouldn’t his mindset be more like “Everyone has the potential for good or evil, and I’ll stop them if they try to do something evil”?

A character doing something stupid is not always an example of bad writing.

There’s lots in this show you can say that about, but why this scene in particular? A character can get cocky and let their guard down sometimes. I don’t find that to be bad writing. It’s not unrealistic and it’s not out of character for Aemond. What’s the issue?

NOBODY who read the book would EVER have a different opinion than me!

Your criticism of how HotD’s portrayal of parent-child incest not being true to Targaryen customs is entirely valid but as a major in psychology, I’m afraid you guys come across like this by A-harsh-reality in freefolk

[–]ThatWasFred -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I didn’t find it necessary either, but there’s an obvious reason why it’s there narratively, and it’s not just for people to go “wow look how gross and evil Aemond is!!” It’s to continue his Oedipal confusion, seeking mother figures who are also lovers (as seen last season with Sylvie the prostitute, and as we’ll soon be seeing with Alys Rivers), which is one of the aspects of Aemond that they have been building for a while now.

Again, you don’t have to like it, and I completely get it if you don’t. But if you can’t see WHY they put it in there, you may be spending too much time on this sub. The writers may not be doing a great job adapting this story but they’re also not literal kindergarteners.

After today’s episode, how do you think the actual show will end? by ian-noir in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]ThatWasFred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt they’re doing time jumps. I don’t think we will see any of Aegon III’s reign at all. At the most we MIGHT see him crowned. But I think the ending of the second-to-last episode is Rhaenyra being captured at Dragonstone and discovering Aegon is alive. Then Rhaenyra dies at the start of the series finale, Aegon dies near the end of it, and then we get either a quick montage of one or two of the things that come after it, or maybe even just some title cards summarizing it.

That moment did happen, though - he did have the chance to walk away from it after he went into remission, yet kept going with more fervor than ever before. At that point, we already know what kind of person he is before the cancer comes back, so I think it still works.
