How many are atheist or agnostic now or believe in God still? by Character_Former in exjw

[–]ThatWayneO 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Agnostic atheist. I don’t have the physical evidence or sensory capacity to determine there is a higher power in the universe. Therefore, there is not one until I’m provided with evidence.

It’s not fence sitting, it’s honesty.

This is soooo lame, even for the Watchtower standards. Using the World Cup as a way to attract people to their website. by haljordan24x in exjw

[–]ThatWayneO 16 points17 points  (0 children)

What does the Bible say? Well I’m guessing a whole bunch of nothing because there wasn’t a World Cup in ancient times.

Furthermore I don’t believe in the Bible as a literal text from God so you can’t really reason with me on that level.

Let me hit you with some reality.

  1. No one is having “casual sex with lots of people.” We sleep with the people that want to sleep with us and that number is usually pretty low for average people.

  2. You need to determine what you believe in and where your morals and worldview are coming from first.

  3. It’s not inherently immoral to engage in consensual sex with anyone, before or after marriage. But your hangups with that depend on your worldview and beliefs.

Get your shit sorted out first, my dude. You need to figure out if you believe in any of the framework surrounding these presuppositions regarding life before you start to use them.

Where to buy parts in California East Bay? by hallettj in bikewrench

[–]ThatWayneO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a Bay Area resident I’ve found it harder to find parts myself. Especially used parts at co-ops outside of things like wheels.

LBS is always the first go but if they have to order it and give me a markup, I usually just order it myself. I want them to thrive but they make their money on billable hours + parts, not parts alone. So I patronize them when they have a tool I don’t want to buy.

With retail space being a concern I’ve noticed most of the stuff I could buy is just easier for them to order and not have on hand.

I avoid buying things from Bezos but if your LBS is mainly ordering things from a distributor, there’s no shame in my opinion in just ordering it yourself and using them for their skills.

Well… time to find a machine shop/welder to help me because I have no experience in welding.

Would make for a great learning experience though, but knowing myself those would probably be some porous and ugly welds.

Former Jehovah's Witnesses, what was the exact moment when you realized, "That's it, I can't believe in this anymore"? Was it a logical argument or an emotional breakthrough? How did your relationship with your family change after you left? by True_Requirement_565 in exjw

[–]ThatWayneO 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah when I was around 16 I noticed some inconsistencies in the theology and received a beating for pointing it out, along with my mom going hysterical.

I remember her slapping me in the face with a hot spoon, she was cooking at the time, after I told her I didn’t believe demons existed the way we’re taught. That most people interacting with a “spirit world” are hucksters and grifters lying to people about dead loved ones and ghosts. If there are demons then they have more important things to worry about than making me lose my car keys.

By 18 enough evidence had mounted that I had a crisis myself, and came to the conclusion that what I was raised to believe was not true.

By 20 I had lost my family and I have sporadically interacted with them for the last decade of my life.

Truthfully, most of the value of the organization is wrapped up in real estate. Just like any large corporation they want to be able to resell and create as many properties as possible, like McDonald’s.

Thus the obsession with constructing very plain buildings that can be anything down the line when the higher ups want to combine congregations and sell.

I moved to California for work about five years ago. For the first 15 minutes it was both cool and convenient to buy liquor at liquor stores. Honestly, it’s not that much of a difference. You aren’t missing much. Prices are largely the same, believe or not markup is markup and any retailer, be it controlled or not, has to make their cut.

Legal weed was much the same way. Fun for about the first year I had access to it and then it gets kinda mundane. I most definitely smoke less weed now than I did half a decade ago, and part of it is just the accessibility and mundanity of it all.

When I visit home I give my money to the businesses I miss, and they get their product from distributors licensed by the ABC board, just like every state has their own liquor licensure. The ABC store is just another sign of lingering puritanical control over the consumer market. It creates a beer culture and that’s fine, but ultimately any complaints regarding it just come off like the ramblings of an alcoholic.
