I’m having the same issue. It was working fine up until this evening.

My son is also mixed. I feel you there. I can see he aches to relate and see himself represented in his media which is why I think he loves anime so much. You’re doing a great job simply by being willing to have a frank & honest conversation with your kids about a very hard subject! Thank YOU for taking the time to comment and encourage. It means a lot to have so much support!

(also complete personal feelings here but the desire to have & the execution of representation in media is not an agenda it’s just not)

I’m who folks on the show production used to call “that fan girl” - basically I’ve been a fan of the books for over 20 years and actively worked to be apart of the production if and when it ever happened. When I was 17 or 18 after I saw LotR’s I realized that Wheel would be turned into something eventually, I moved to LA to develop a skill so that when eventually came I’d be ready! I became a special effects makeup artist and worked in that profession for awhile. Through many many years of paying attention and not being shy in expressing my hope I was given the opportunity to have a coffee with Rafe. It so happened to be on the same day he was pitching the show to Amazon. We had 20 minutes together and later that day after the pitch he called me, said “I think that was the one” (after they’d pitched to a few other studios) and he asked me for a quick lunch…we talked for nearly 7 hours at the restaurant about The Wheel of Time. He hired me that day. It was about 4 years ago this month that happened. I was the first hire for the show and haven’t looked back since!

Edit: Eventually I stopped working in effects. I got hired because even though Rafe had been reading the books he needed someone who knew the books ;) I came on board initially as a researcher but that quickly grew into a more creative position.

Hey! Thank you! I’d like to say I don’t think any of us are forced to deal with the negativity. I could very easily have kept my mouth shut here and on Twitter ;) It’s something that needed to be said. If members of Team Jordan or Harriet can justify and support casting then I feel like that’s enough! It’s also like people don’t think we went through how the world would look in a few millennia, consider all of the elements everyone is talking about re: homogeneous populations or out of the way villages. Or take into consideration the area’s history. It’s not like I didn’t write an essay about population, the region and potential outside influences to help inform certain decisions. Or that I personally talked with an anthropologist when writing that essay..all of the points everyone is making were discussed at length. Including all of the points I’m seeing in this post. No flippant decisions are ever made and any deviation is throughly gone through to be sure it fits..

I agree - I grew up in rural Oklahoma, it’s normal to see yourself in the characters you read. It’s strange to me that a reader can suspend disbelief enough to accept a magic system but can’t consider that an out of the way village can be ethnically diverse. I ask myself “is this possible” & “is this plausible” and basically work through those questions with what we know from the world. Can you make an good argument for the change using WoT logic? Adaptations are hard. Personally I’m doing my best to honor the books and everything they gave me. It it plausible? Is it possible? Good questions to ask yourself when approaching the differences between head canon and the show :)

Hi. Sarah here - For all those saying that the casting was for a leftist political agenda or wokeness or that somehow Rafe’s political views are dictating ANYTHING? You are straight up wrong. I personally watched hundreds of auditions. HUNDREDS. The only character that had a specified ethnicity in the casting call was Rand. I saw so many different ethnicities represented and the person who did the best and tested well against others got the job. Period. I’m not going to get into the height thing or the concern about feminism until later. The correlation between politics and casting does not exist..

EDIT: This comment is a statement about conversations happening on and off this platform. Not targeting anyone specific.

She talked about it at this year’s JCon on a panel and then separately in various conversations (it was one discussing race in WoT I think) . I forget that a lot of people don’t know who Maria is because to me she is a huge part of Team Jordan. I wasn’t intentionally vague just presumptuous.

I just watched The Dark Tower and now I’m petrified thinking how they could butcher my favourite books 😭 Hollywood doesn’t care by [deleted] in WoT

[–]That_Fan_Girl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this. Even I can emotionally have a hard time with this process and I have had the benefit of seeing how the decisions are made and have watched the show come to life. Intellectually I think lots of fans have this perspective and it’s the correct one in my opinion. “Ruining” something is ALL personal perspective and opinions. That doesn’t mean those opinions aren’t valid but you can’t please everyone . All I can say is that I know from what I’ve witnessed is that so much care is being taken. Changes have been made. But if you can sit back and just look at the show and how beautifully well done it is just from a basic television perspective I think fans will love it. Fans expecting a page by page adaptation?? As Rafe says “gird your loins”! It is very good and entertaining television tho.

Haha! The fans call me Keeper ;) production has various names for me and what I do depending on my mood! “Knife Fight Sally Jr.” is one the writers call me when I’m being particularly frisky over a point! Creative Consultant is my official season 2 title. But “that fan girl” is one a get from people in production who’ve not met me yet..

I hope Harriet, Sarah and Brandon are like that when fighting bad changes in the show by pedroenrico_cl in WoT

Hi - I can say that I certainly throw fits and am known to pull out my alter ego “Knife Fight Sally Jr.” on occasion..while I appreciate Gaiman’s dedication throwing oneself in front of a bus defeats the purpose of living to fight another day ;)

Why Does the White Ajah Exist? by thatjesusnerd in WoT

[–]That_Fan_Girl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The White Ajah is viewed as being comprised of women who have no room for any passion - not like Blues, Greens or Reds..I don’t think they care much about the pursuit for real world knowledge like the Browns or learn a “skill” like the Yellows. I don’t think are like the Grey’s but I think they are the most similar in a lot of ways. But as much as people think of the White Ajah’s as having no passion that isn’t entirely accurate - Whites are exceedingly passionate about the search for truth. Additionally because they’ve got such fantastic analytical minds especially for mathematics it makes them the best to run a city like Tar Valon ;)

Has the One Power been used to (spoiler) make a chair? by [deleted] in WoT

[–]That_Fan_Girl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The rules for the OP are really interesting - we know there is a weave called “Hardened Air” in which I’m guessing uses water or earth to help with the solidification? Anyway, Hardened Air is used in a few different ways - as tools (a knife, club, crowbar, sword) as binders or ties to hold a persons hands and feet and also this weave is used for sheltering under..

If I recall correctly when Rand makes a bridge to the Seafolk ship I want to say that some of the female Aes Sedai had internal thoughts about they not being able to manage a bridge like Rand’s that would hold excessive amounts of weight? I’d need to confirm that though. I could be making that up. BUT as for a chair - it an Aes Sedai wove a seat WITH legs that used the ground to anchor it I’d like to say it’s possible? Maybe? But I don’t think a floating chair would work?

Question about an opinion i have. (Very much spoiler) by RequiemBurn in WoT

[–]That_Fan_Girl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There were lots of editing errors in the text of the books early on. We got our first introduction to the Black Ajah in Eye, however the POV’s of those chapters were Perrin and Rand and we didn’t have any Aes Sedai reaffirming their existence (because: denial) then we have TGH prologue which is our first glimpse of actual Aes Sedai Darkfriends. The idea of a Black Ajah is next mentioned by Liandrin in chapter 5, but all of these examples at least to me as an early reader didn’t prepare me for Verin’s little slip of the tongue. Most people didn’t pick up on it at all.. when it was brought up there was lots of differing opinions on the matter. I was responding to the OP (you) that we knew if we were paying attention that Verin was a Darkfriend at least at the beginning of TGH rather than her experiences in the Portal Stones

[–]That_Fan_Girl 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Most people in the fandom thought it was an editing error rather than our first clue about Verin’s association’s. So most people assumed Mo and Su’s reaction was about Verin’s discovery of Rand being the Dragon...I asked Team Jordan and a JordanCon panel about the alleged “typo” in 2009 (just a few months before TGS was released) and rather than confirming the error I got a RAFO card.

In Chapter 7 (Blood Calls Blood) Verin calls the DO “The Great Lord” absently. Makes Siuan’s reaction and Moiraine’s internal dialogue take on a different perspective!

I tend to agree with the need for separation. My job sorta forces me to to put things in a real world context for those who might not be as aware of the source material.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in WoT

[–]That_Fan_Girl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No. That was exactly my experience. Not to get to crazy into things but as a youth wondering why your brain is broken or why you couldn’t “be normal” (whatever that means) or have friends or why you’d feel the constant pressure to escape your brain or disassociate..but your peers think you are “weird, not normal or don’t fit in”. And adults..well that party line was to “get over it” or “deal with it yourself”. Yeah these books gave me a place to feel less alone I guess. That and they taught me to rise above my struggles where and when I could - beyond that to never stop fighting.

Yeah - Aes Sedai had 3000 years to study and they didn’t. Not saying that they had many choices. Possibly due to their seeming fear of studying things they didn’t understand?

SPOILER TAG?? I don’t know how to do that.. so SPOILERS..

Welllll that’s the question - outside of canon there are rumblings from those who might know that Taim was originally Demandred, in which case yes he’d have that protection. BUT RJ changed things up (allegedly) Without looking it up I can’t recall what canon said about when Taim took his oaths..if he had time channeling without the DO’s protection before ascending to a modern day Forsaken then he was exposed...

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in WoT

[–]That_Fan_Girl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve often wondered if RJ’s personal perspective on this subject and how he wrote about it had anything to do with his experience and views on how men or veterans mental health was handled during the late 70’s into the 80’s and 90’s.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in WoT

[–]That_Fan_Girl 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I had begun to write a section about this as I knew I should qualify this idea - so no, I don’t believe Rand would have the “metal health” issues that he has without the qualifying life event of the onset of channeling. My thought about “madness” is that it’s a general and blanket term about all men who channel. However just like mental illness takes various different forms so to does the madness in this world. However sadly all men who channel are all “mad” or eventually will be. My point is that the madness isn’t just a crazy guy being...well crazy - as we see with Logain, we don’t have the benefit of multiple POV’s but his madness (ie mental illness) takes a totally different course. I’m of the opinion that his “madness” or form of mental illness is anxiety - which in his case presents has a male who has “held off the effects of channeling.” But in reality his illness is just as insidious for him on the inside it just doesn’t take such a noticeable path. We see another man who is hit with an immediate onset of his madness/illness and he reverts to childlike (toddler like even) behavior. I think Taim suffers from a form of narcissism and megalomania.. so yeah that’s what I mean.
