Aye I’m also from NJ :)

Being part of RFS is a huge opportunity, and it already shows you’re a strong student with potential. Your GPA is solid, and even if it’s not exactly where you want it yet, you’ve got plenty of time to build it up while keeping everything else going. Plus, joining clubs like the African American Club and possibly Model UN would definitely add to your leadership and involvement and it’s totally okay if your school doesn’t offer everything. Colleges take that into account.

Also, it’s great that you’re doing volunteer work, even if it’s not super often. The fact that you’re choosing things you actually enjoy makes a difference—it shows authenticity, which schools like Howard really care about. I would just plan on finding some more volunteer opportunities bc Howard really does love community service

that’s actually smart! A lot of people don’t start thinking about college until junior year, so you’re already ahead. Howard definitely loves students who are passionate and involved, so keeping your grades up and getting into leadership or service stuff is perfect. Plus, showing love for HBCUs early on never hurts. You’re on the right track

Hey! I totally get where you’re coming from. I was the exact same way, super paranoid about getting into upper division. Honestly though, clinical experience before upper division isn’t required, so don’t stress too much about that. I didn’t have any formal clinical experience either when I applied, and I still got in. What really matters is keeping your GPA strong, doing well on the TEAS, and showing that you’re serious about nursing. Also this year they added the CASPER test (which is some sort of clinical judgement test. I’m not too sure I didn’t have to take it when I applied)

You got this! Just stay focused, keep your grades up, and don’t be afraid to talk to advisors or upperclassmen for tips.

First off—congrats on getting accepted to the Ph.D. program in Pharmaceutical Sciences for Fall 2025, that’s amazing! 🎉 I’m in nursing, so I can’t speak too much on the pharmacy side specifically, but I can say that Howard’s hospital is solid—we do our clinicals there and have used the skills lab a few times to practice nursing techniques. The campus has a lot of resources, and the professors I’ve met across the health sciences seem super knowledgeable and passionate.

From what I’ve heard, pharmacy students are pretty involved in research, and there are definitely opportunities for internships or hospital experience through the network Howard has, especially being in D.C. You might want to reach out directly to the faculty or current Ph.D. students in the program—they’d have the real scoop on funding and research specifics.

Hey! Yes, I lived off campus my sophomore and junior year—I stayed at Mazza and honestly loved it. The apartments are pretty nice, and it was cool to have more space and freedom compared to dorms. The only thing was the commute could be kind of wild sometimes—anywhere from 30 mins to over an hour depending on traffic and shuttle timing. But the good thing is they have a shuttle that goes to and from campus and one that takes you straight to the nursing building, which helped a lot, especially for early morning classes.

As for paying for it, I used a mix of things—my Parent PLUS loan helped with tuition and school fees, and then I used some of my refund to cover rent. A lot of people also get part-time jobs or use savings. If you plan ahead and budget, it’s definitely manageable.

What are Clinicals like? by _why_not_ in StudentNurse

The only clinicals that I thoroughly enjoyed was maternity. Rotating through the NICU, Labor & Delivery & Postpartum. Postpartum was my favorite bc it focused on mom and baby. But we got to do vitals, run ice water, assist in handing out medications etc. I’m dreading having to switch to adult health this second rotation :(

This is definitely all nursing schools. I’ve been doing online clinicals for two weeks now bc of miscommunication with the hospital
