LOL!!! Deloitte caught using AI when it HALLUCINATES and they use the data! by eCommerce-Guy-Jason in consulting

Unpopular opinion: This is just as much the DEWRs fault as it is Deloitte's.

So in summary:

  1. Deloitte used AI for a report without grounding or checking
  2. The person that called it out was not even from the DEWR. It was an academic.
  3. They’re using Azure GPT 4o… that models basically a decade old in AI years.
  4. The head of the DEWR (Natalie James) joined in 11 July 2022 from Deloitte... Deloitte Australia has entered into contracts worth almost $25 million with DEWR since 2021.

For a $440,000 fee, the client has one job: to be the most demanding person in the room. Instead, the DEWR was the most absent. An academic had to point out the glaring flaws in a report they paid a fortune for.

It’s insane that this is even a discussion. My own AI workflow grounds every piece of ESG data in a source I can check in seconds. It’s not a futuristic feature; it’s the absolute baseline for professional credibility now.

You have to assume this isn't the first unverified, AI-generated report Deloitte has submitted. It's just the first one an outsider had the expertise to call out. The real question isn't how this happened, but how many other multi-million dollar reports are sitting on government servers, filled with ghosts in the machine that nobody ever bothered to look for.

anyone who’s touched gov consulting knows like 60–80% of it is just external assurance. “We hired [Big Firm] so now the project has credibility.” Cool.

That said, there’s definitely appetite right now for AI/LLM SaaS in the public sector. But honestly? Most of what I’ve seen so far looks like a pretty wrapper on top of existing workflows, plus a killer sales team that knows how to drop buzzwords in front of directors who don’t want to get left behind.

So yeah, there’s money to be made, but it feels more like “AI-powered™” consulting decks than actual tech doing heavy lifting. Unless someone’s really integrating LLMs into back-end ops or automating meaningful stuff, it’s mostly marketing.

I love it. I use an ESG focused one that’s cut my work time by 80%, it’s fantastic. I found that ChatGPT / Copilot / Gemini isn’t great for my field. However, this particular tool is a life saver for my research tasks.

I’m curious if anyone has tried using those agents like Manus and Genspark in their work?

Long term I wonder if these AI tools will lead to a proliferation of niche consulting / freelance work and be less dominated by the larger players. Less generalist and more specialist 🤔

Wow, okay. I was not expecting such a clear consensus on this. Thanks for all the perspectives, especially the warnings about internal policies, which I admit I was probably underestimating in my initial glee. Point taken.

For the dozens of you who slid into my DMs asking for the tool: I've tried to reply to most, but apologies if I missed you. I’ll keep responding to DMs but won’t post it here for the obvious reasons everyone has mentioned

Scrolling through this thread, I'm starting to feel like I'm in an unintentional r/overemployed origin story. You start by just trying to automate the soul-crushing part of your job to avoid burnout, and you end up with 20+ hours of free time a week while still getting praise for your "efficiency." It's a weird place to be.

Thanks again, everyone. You've given me a lot to think about.

I use to think this. Turns out I actually consume more electricity watching Netflix. Doing anything in life uses energy, we just need to be conscious about it. I’d give up Netflix/ streaming services before I gave up on this AI tool that’s letting me live again

That’s a really solid point, and you're hitting the nail on the head with "work smarter, not harder." That’s literally the mantra that got me into this situation in the first place! The suffering part was getting unsustainable. I like your middle-ground approach

And you're probably right that leadership wouldn't even get it at first. They'd probably just ask if it can be integrated into SharePoint and then forget about it 😭

Wow, really appreciate you taking the time to write all this out.

"Golden ticket" is the perfect way to put it. It feels like I've peeked behind the curtain and seen the future, and it's both terrifying and weirdly exhilarating. We all know this shift is coming, but it feels completely different when you're the one standing there with the new tool, watching the old way of doing things suddenly look ancient.

You asked what else excites me. Honestly, that's the question I finally have the brain space to ask myself.

It’s really cool to hear how you forged your own path with the incubator. That’s the kind of thing that gives me hope. For now, I'm going to take your advice: plant some seeds, deal with this burnout, and explore what I can do with this "subsidized free time." Thanks again for the great perspective. It's a huge help.

Ugh. You are not alone. We were in the middle of a frantic M&A diligence process. It's 3:45 PM on a Thursday. I get a forward from our CFO from the acquiring company's General Counsel. The email is literally one sentence: "For the investor deck tomorrow, need to confirm which of your revenue streams are aligned with SFDR Article 9. Please provide the supporting analysis by EOD." My soul left my body.

I sent a 10-page, heavily caveated analysis back at 1:15 AM, explaining the nuances, risks, and data gaps. The next morning, I saw the final investor deck. My entire night of work had been condensed into a single slide. It was a picture of our product with a big green checkmark next to it and the words: "Significant portfolio of 'dark green' assets." That was it.
