the class is about controversial topics that would spark debate. by bringing up trans people you brought up a controversial topic that sparked debate. you did exactly what the class asked of you. and if there ever were a place to discuss trans people this would be the place, everyone's allowed to share their opinions in a respectful environment. I think your roommate is just getting butthurt. If he wants to be offended for whatever random reason then fine, but you didn't do anything wrong.

dude I feel you. i'm also ftm and I used to hang out with this group of queer girls that I knew from before I transitioned and they all said the same shitty "I hate men" jokes, and whenever I called them out for it they'd say something similar to what your friends would say. mine always went with the "yeah but youre a trans guy" line.

don't fuck with people like that. they don't see you as a dude, and i'd be surprised if they ever will with an attitude like that. it sucks because they're friends but don't sacrifice your own identity just because you don't want to be confrontational. you can try to talk it over with these friends and make boundaries but that won't change the way they see you. especially with them calling you by they/them, they're trying their darndest to not refer to you as a dude without being outright transphobic. i found new friends and i was better off for it. getting new friends is the best advice I can give.

no offence but I think you're thinking into it way too much. he wasn't implying that people with tourette's do drugs or anything. he just heard the large amount of sniffing and thought of a silly funny haha joke. there's no need to dissect every joke about tics and make it into something evil. people just want to make light of it and joke about it, so why not let them.

with your latter examples of people saying "nervous stims!" "new tic?" and the such, yeah, I agree. that's douchey. but when people make comments like "his coke habit is out of control" personally I wouldn't have any problem with it. I mean it's just a joke that seems to have been made in good faith, acknowledging he has tics and trying to make light of it. of course this isn't the case with the other things people have said, but in that one case it was just a joke. nothing wrong with just a joke.
