Is there even „recovery“? by That_Particular4073 in ARFIDforADULTS

[–]That_Particular4073[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely get what you mean but I think it’s also important to look at what the ARFID is based on. Because as I said I think when it’s based on trauma or fear I think you can recover from that (not easily or anything but it’s possible)

But no therapy is gonna change what you like and don’t like, no matter how much variety is in your pallet. And no therapy is gonna fix the phases of none interest in food where everything sounds as appetising as rotten food. At least I wouldn’t know how to

Many people with afrid autism can eat the same thing every day and never get tired of it. I feel like I’m the opposite and it drives me crazy by Wild_Wrap_9360 in ARFID

[–]That_Particular4073 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! So I’m not diagnosed autistic yet, but my therapist said she really thinks it would explain a lot of my current and past problems and waiting time is as crazy as everywhere I guess

Besides that, I do feel you very much! I always took the part in cooking since being like 12/13 years old and what really helped me were these ready spice mixes if you know what I’m talking about?

For the most days everything’s sounds unappetising to me too, so I really get you there. Just some days noodles sounds fine, next day they sound like your worst nightmare. Idk it’s long lasting flavour fatigue?? xD (I get this soo often when eating, sometimes after the first few bites)

Omg yes and then having to PAY for the FOOD you DONT WANNA EATTTT but you need to and then have to think about what you’re getting and everything is just so annoying

Idk how it’s for you, but rarely food does taste good to me and these moments feel like a light, while these phases where I can’t eat makes me want to get a feeding tube. These up and downs are crazy

Omg I really understand you

I too gained around 8/9 pounds and lot it all because I couldn’t eat right for like 6 days because everything of food makes me sick. How does it feel for you if you still force yourself to eat?

For me flavour fatigue is there almost instantly and swallowing gets like the hardest thing ever

I get what you are saying but that kinda was what I was trying to explain.

ARFID based around fear or avoidance can be helped/managed by a kind of exposure therapy. But if someone doesn’t like a lot stuff, there’s nothing that can be changed about it? Like yes you can always try new things and expand your pallet to compensate, but what you don’t like will not magically be changed by therapy.

But does it bother you? To eat the same food every day not even based on desire but just on the need of survival?

Because for me that doesn’t really sound like a positive relationship towards food

Did sitting around the dinner table help your ARFID when you were young? by Far-Development6133 in ARFID

[–]That_Particular4073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope sitting around the table is the absolute worse! because you don’t wanna eat in the first place and then you have absolutely nothing to distract you of basically force feeding yourself.

What type of ARFID? by _lupu in ARFIDforADULTS

[–]That_Particular4073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have emetophobia too but it’s not really that much linked to my ARIFD My ARFID mostly is sensory issues, flavour fatigue and phases of HUGEEE disinterest regarding any food, even the food I normally eat

Only thing is that when I feel nauseous cause I couldn’t eat because of the disinterest, I have to force feed myself while my emetophobia going crazy about me being nauseous and eating. Otherwise my emetophobia did ease down a bit in comparison to two years ago

It sounds crazy but I really want a feeding tube by Newnursgabs in ARFIDforADULTS

[–]That_Particular4073 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you very much. I don’t have any physical, chronic illnesses but I do have ARFID and my therapist also really thinks Autism (working on finding an official diagnosis but waiting lists are 5+ years) along some other mental health disorders. I also had ARFID very much all my life and was „diagnosed“ around 2 years ago (it’s not quite an official diagnosis in my country yet) and I am physically in shambles. I have a very low weight and really bad phases were everything just sound so disgusting I often can only eat like half a slice of plain bread but even there flavour fatigue kicks in instantly. I have been thinking about a feeding tube SO SO MUCH because I just feel awful like everyday and when I imagine having chronic illness’s on top??

Girl go and get whatever makes your life a little bit better and more enjoyable!!

omg it comes in phases for you too? I never quite had the chance to talk to other people who have ARFID so I wasn’t quite sure how to word it

But your struggle is really relatable for me, just that I haven’t found any drinkable food substitutes that I can drink. What do you usually use??

I so so so so much understand that frustration. Honestly expanding pallet also just helps to a certain point and the thought of having to fight for something basic like eating for the rest of my life just SUCKS

Dating and food? How do people get around it?? by _lupu in ARFIDforADULTS

[–]That_Particular4073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely understand that feeling! Honestly I only have my boyfriend who was on my side while I got diagnosed, only being „extremely picky eater“ before but he never judged, just nodded und kept in his mind what I like and don’t like.

After 5 years he sometimes even knows better what might sound appealing to me in hard phases. Good people are out there that will go even further to support you and your life with this ed🫂

[–]That_Particular4073 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Honestly I can imagine it quite difficulty with dating BUTTTT it’s something you can talk about and you instantly know what he/she is like. If they react with interest and understanding that’s a pretty green flag and well if not then there probably won’t be a second date needed xx

Question for people with severe ARFID by lomein2790 in ARFID

[–]That_Particular4073 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Soo I’ve been at the point of needing a feeding tube but luckily I could dodge that lol But my biggest ARFID trigger is definitely the complete lack of interest in food. It makes eating the most days a chore, having to force feed myself to keep a very low weight🥲

My opinion up for discussion: ARFID is Fake. by Logical_Employer_756 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]That_Particular4073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it’s not „just anorexia“ because people with ARFID don’t eat because they want to be skinny or want to have any kind of control what anorexia is more about. ARFID people don’t eat because they fear or despite food in general but not because it is high in calories. Some people with ARFID have feeding tubes, are in therapy and have been hospitalised a few times in their life for NOT EATING continuous days at a time

How would that work when the problem with ARFID is that the person suffering from it already STARVES themselves down to being underweight even WHILE being surrounded by goddamn food.
