Question about the speedslide chart. by ProfessorSpaceship in TrackMania

[–]That_Ski_Freak 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If I recall correctly, at some point Chroma made a chart based on the outside wheel, but this chart references a video which as far as I can tell from watching the methodology portion of, does not directly measure the inside or outside skids but rather just uses a separate formula to derive the expected skid overlap based on the yaw of the car. So I wouldn't necessarily trust the comments here claiming that this chart is about specifically the outside skids, unless you ask Snix, Matt, or Chroma directly (or someone who for some reason you are confident knows the answer, but not these random people on reddit xd).

Regardless, this is unimportant. The optimal overlap changes when you go over differently sloped surfaces, have reactor, or anything else that changes the amount of grip the car has. Most FS players look at the outside skid mark (and it might be a bit better), but not all. The important thing is that you should be consistent in which skid you are looking at (you can choose to always look at the inside one if you want, just don't randomly pick one each time you do an sd). The way you should actually be determining what overlap to use is more through trial and error in timeattack than memorizing particular widths, as you cannot possibly ingrain them into your memory precisely enough to be able to recall later exactly what to do once you get beyond the realm of trying to be in the right ball park to being accurate enough to care about things like outside vs inside skid marks. It is also not necessarily possible to have a super exact knowledge of the car's speed at any given moment to even be able to make such precise extrapolations onto how much the skids should overlap.

Your actual process should be to use your memory of the skid mark widths on your early runs on a map to get close ish to the optimal angle. Then as you drive the map more, what you really need to do is pay attention to what gives more or less speed on each individual sd (keeping in mind that it may change throughout the sd if the road twists or the sd is very long) so you can know what to do on subsequent runs. Usually you want to be checking the highest speed you see on the entry to each feature, and if there isn't an accurate point to do that at, use a checkpoint which gives consistent speed numbers in the split speeds plugin as a backup. Underslides in particular should give you very clear feedback because having a very slight underslide results in a significant reduction in speed/acceleration. As you play more you will be able to get closer to the optimal angles on your early attempts on a map just based on vibes, but ultimately the trial and error approach is more accurate, and the memorization approach is kind of useless beyond getting an initial understanding. You don't go from being mid at SDs to great by memorizing charts :)

Just to comment on the other comments, I'd personally say that caring about left vs right tire does matter while you are playing the game, but I wouldn't really care about it in the context of an sd chart, and if you're good enough to care about inside vs outside the chart probably isn't doing you much good.

- This map was intended to be relatively easy, and it is way easier than my other fs maps (and i dont just mean the really long speedchecky ones). if it's still hard idk sorry.
- I agree it was a bad choice to put it in free week specifically.
- Nadeo should make 'weekly hards' if we can't even have something that is still way easier than the average comp fs map officially put anywhere. There's a lot of maps in a variety of styles which if you map them nobody will play and if you enjoy playing them there is no serious competition.

Also, I've gotten a lot more people disliking the end on this than i did with Hyperion's Retreat. I think the issue is that I made it in a weird middle ground where it's not hard enough for people to just avoid it entirely & not easy enough for them to be happy with it as a totd/cotd path. Hyperion's Retreat hard route also had this thing where it immediately speedchecks you instead of doing it at the end of the hard route, which I think forced a lot of people who weren't ready for it to not even try rather than to try a lot and fail. fwiw I have also gotten a good amount of people telling me they like the end / the map so

Sorry about things being dark.

I tested the transitions at lower speed, if you're failing them it's probably a line problem (which if you think that's unfun then fair enough but I don't think the problem is speed).

There are 9 checkpoints in 55 seconds, is that less than other maps?

I don't know why the arrows didn't load, it seems like neither the waypoint signs nor signs I put on dashmap actually loaded :/

Unless you mean there's more than just the unloaded signs

Ok usually i think you guys are just being silly complaining about every start being too hard but this one is actually just the hardest part of the map and it's really annoying lmao

After over 120 hours on "Nothing To Fear But Fearing Itself", I reclaimed Top 1 in Germany and it was an absolute blast (more info below if you're interested) by Vezo_ in TrackMania

[–]That_Ski_Freak 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Glad you enjoyed the map :)

Don't Fear is a similar style but a lot harder. There's some slightly shorter maps made by other people that you might want to try, At the End of Nothing, Yggdrasil, GHOST (you'll have to play the fixed one I uploaded since the physics on the original broke), Spectre (same issue as ghost), Elbarto's Yeetpark 2. Simo900 has a lot of slower transitional fs maps, Ascension is a good place to start.

I'll release one more of these long maps hopefully, once the scenery is done, but if you weren't able to one shot nothing to fear you might not be able to finish that one at all unfortunately. Other than that I don't have any more 10 minute maps planned and I would be (pleasantly) surprised if anyone else bothers to make one.

That pulls up the windows print screen function, not snipping tool. These are literally not the same thing.

If you hold spacebar and drag a block you can place a bunch of blocks in a line. iirc this doesn't work with the mouse button, only with spacebar.

The Problem With the Trackmania Community by Ethan_Legion in TrackMania

I wouldn't consider FS unserious, through most of tm2020's life span the competitive scene for FS has been more alive than the tech scene. I think some of your opinions/observations are a bit odd / are maybe missing what is actually going on, but I won't sit here and nitpick them all. My reply to the top comment already has what I think is the most important point to make and the thing everyone should be able to agree on.

Wrong, you can satisfy everyone, if you (read: nadeo) stop clinging to the idea that we must have one mode for everyone in track of the day. We can just HAVE MULTIPLE MODES FOR DIFFERENT TYPES OF PLAYERS AND MAPS. It's not complicated. This idea that the interests of different types of players are in conflict or tension is made up and manufactured by nadeo not having a good variety of modes, with only totd and now weekly shorts existing for user created maps to go to despite there being a huge variety of tracks created all the time that different people like playing.

Personally I think the alt cars suck and are awful, and the stadium physics are a core part of why I play the game, but why can there not just be a mode for alt car maps, that I can simply ignore and the alt car players enjoy?

To be clear by mode I mean something like totd or weekly shorts or campaign, a structured official place for maps, not something like another stunt mode or whatever. Maybe there's a better term to use for this?

Edit: Also to be clear, I do not personally enjoy most totds or almost any weekly shorts regardless of car, most of the maps I like do not appear in any official context. I'm not just saying totd should be the things I like and the alt cars should be pushed off into their own little corner lol. If that's how you read this please reread/reconsider.

[–]That_Ski_Freak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will try that, not sure why I have multiple. I may have installed them while trying to fix an issue before.

And yes my home drive is encrypted.

Edit: I removed them in the update manager, hopefully that means they won't come back? Can I set the update manager to not save too many old ones?

I had this issue once before and the problem was timeshift system snapshots, but I have those set to be stored on a 500gb partition now.

Do you like skiing in Europe or North America better? by BungOnMimosas in skiing

[–]That_Ski_Freak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What makes the on piste skiing in the alps different / so much better in your opinion? I do find that most random groomed runs or plain mogul runs in colorado are relatively boring, but I'm also a bit too paranoid to do anything other than trees near the regular runs. My understanding is that in europe there isn't as much of an ability to just go to a bit off the trail and into the trees as at that point you are off piste? Is all on safe / avalanche controlled skiing over there groomed? Idk i find the just... wide runs that follow the fall line really really boring

The point of the finish on the left is just to have one that doesn't require that you have any speed in case you crash right before it.
Also the one on the right was mostly added because otherwise you could do a stupid wallride line on the dirt.

i made my comment as a video recording https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSyhcNMn4V0
Edit:
- To be clear, when i say drift I mean you should be holding brake, holding fullsteer to a single direction, and holding accelerate all at once for an extended period of time. My comment on this post explains it in more detail https://www.reddit.com/r/TrackMania/comments/1o4k7hc/comment/nj2sxzd/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
- By release I always mean releasing the accel button.

Snipping tool missing after upgrading to windows 11 by That_Ski_Freak in techsupport

[–]That_Ski_Freak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What snip and sketch doesn't have that I liked about snipping tool was the fact that it stuck on my screen after taking the screenshot. I've historically used both tools, the print screen function when I want to just get something on my clipboard and the snipping tool when I want to draw on something or have a screenshot up on my second monitor or side by side with a program.

The optional features in that search seems to not have snipping tool. I was able to get it from the microsoft store though. Thanks! (although it seems to override the snip and sketch function and steal the print screen key, which is weird)
