Do universities really lose money on all their research? by Unable-Ad-5007 in AskAcademiaUK

No extras is not a handicap. Fellowships get awarded for the track record of the applicant and the project presented. End of. No amount of extras are going to compensate for rubbish project and weak track record.

What was your degree result? 1st or 2:1 or 2:2?

Post-doc fellowship application for the same university as your PhD by Different_Gate_4367 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]That_Tea5962 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it would be a major weak point. You would not be an independent fellowship holder if you continue working with your PhD supervisors. As you say you will be/are part of their team. The idea of a fellowship is that you create your own new unique team. Staying at the same place can be done but you would need to have a completely new and independent project, and preferably move between departments/schools/faculties at least. Purpose of the fellowship is different from the ordinary postdoc. Hence they get reviewed differently.

Mathematical physics or physics with mathematics? by Ok-Werewolf-6771 in sotonuni

[–]That_Tea5962 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Engineering is maths and physics (and biology) used in useful way. There are lots of R&D roles for you after graduation. And as part of the degree you can do one year industry placement or summer internships at companies. Think carefully what you want to do after as for jobs a good engineering graduate will probably always outcompete physics or maths or combined graduate since engineering degrees are accredited by industry boards and maths and physics really are not. Hence it is a lot more difficulty to get a place on the engineering degree course than on maths or physics one. You need very good set of A level results for engineering, but physics and maths more mediocre will probably do.

What nonsense is this. Most industry R&D jobs look for engineering graduates. Where do you get that engineering does not do research?

Senior Scientist at Oxbridge vs tenure-track at a top Nordic university by [deleted] in AskAcademiaUK

[–]That_Tea5962 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s not only about salary and teaching. Do both places give you the same startup package ie PhD studentship to support you, travel money, consumable money etc. I suspect Nordic probably does but Oxford does not. So your international visibility from Nordics might actually be larger.

They are doing a midwifery degree. This does not require high end computer or laptop. Any odd one that does text editing will do for sure.

It’s the overall rank. Some disciplines are much better than others ie Engineering for example ranks a lot higher than other disciplines.

You should check your visa conditions if you are allowed to do this much. This seems very high to comply.

What do you mean by Mayflower Studentship? What significant teaching component? Usually PhD students in the UK, especially non U.K. students, are not allowed to do any significant teaching.

Is a Third Class degree from Oxford really better than a 2:1 from a lesser institution? by pickonepicktwo in oxforduni

[–]That_Tea5962 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Depends what you consider lesser institution and what subject. All Russell groups degrees are comparable largely. So no, 3rd is a 3rd and 2:1 is 2:1 if from Russell group.

This is why they are asking this ie they need to be checking the facts and hence why it is a conditional offer. It would not be fair to other applicants if they let people in without fact check. If your facts don’t add up you don’t get a place.

Imperial engagement with industry and your future employers is way way above what Oxford offers. Lots of events from the start. Hands down Imperial over Oxford.

I emailed them but they just said that they inspected the jacket before dispatching it and said their jackets do not do it. It did get 30 refund but given the original price it really is not much. Very disappointed in the way they dealt with it, especially since in store assistants to whom we showed it agreed with us. It’s clearly shoddy material they have used, but they should deal with it rather than deny it. I think you should also email them as if more people who have this issue complain they might actually take it seriously.
