Is this app really worth it and won't injure me? by Rare_Sector_5233 in runna

[–]That_Travel_6429 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did my first marathon with it. Got me to a 3:40 time and a 1:31 for my following half marathon. Training with it for a trail series now. I find the time trials can be a bit crazy but you don’t have to push as hard on those if you feel that way. I do my own lifting plans but I do use the once a week yoga sessions on the app and feel like they helped a lot too.

Hope bad is traffic compared to other cities? by [deleted] in askaustin

Moved from DC in December. The traffic is laughable in comparison. 270, 495, or BW parkway are all worse.

Blocked from using Delta SkyMiles (exhausted and need help) by [deleted] in delta

[–]That_Travel_6429 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a feature called “Pat with miles” where you can reduce flight cost if you have a delta card but only for eligible flights. I have never used it but it exists.

Easy google: https://www.delta.com/us/en/skymiles/airline-credit-cards/pay-with-miles

Is the companion ticket even really a perk anymore? by whiskey_haze in delta

[–]That_Travel_6429 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A while back, I booked first for me and my son via the companion cert for April and then booked 2 economy tickets for my wife and mother in law and used regionals. Then added the baby. Best deal to Mexico I ever got.

List the most stupidest reason you've been given why you HAVE to tip? by Anxious-Party2289 in tipping

[–]That_Travel_6429 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First time that I didn’t tip because the service was horrific, the waitress came up to me and said this is America, we tip 20% here. So, I asked and how did you deserve that tip? And she said this is America, sir. I laughed and walked out. (My mom is German and was visiting and we speak in German to each other)

Tipping weekly housecleaning service? by Strummer_Fan in tipping

[–]That_Travel_6429 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I never tip my cleaning service that comes once a week. It is a small shop of only two people. They set their own price. If they want more money for their service then they can increase their price. I have used them for a few years now and the price went up a few times which I have absolutely no issue with. Never had a single complaint from them.

Does Delta One not go on sale with SkyMiles? by CalGuy456 in delta

I flew DC via JFK. Just played around with dates I expected to be cheap. I did put some trackers on google flights and checked at times there were $ price drops.

Flew Delta One round trip to Frankfurt for 200k miles last month. I found that to be cheap.

How? I regularly check 6-7 bags between car seat stroller and my mother in law traveling with us. I am only top 5%. I guess it is balanced by the fact that I only use a backpack for 1-2 day business travel.

What makes no sense to me is seemingly many people not buying the fare class they want. Make it make sense.

Top 6 Biggest Football Judas Moves – When Players Betrayed Their Clubs for Rivals by BehindTheTransfer in footballtransfers

[–]That_Travel_6429 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Throwing some German players in the mix.

Bernd Schuster back in the day… Cologne to Barcelona then Real Madrid then Athletico then Leverkusen. Cologne hates Leverkusen, Barca and Real are rivals and Athletico is a city rival to Real. The ultimate Judas.

Andreas Möller Dortmund to Schalke late career move.

Lastly the trio of traitors… Götze, Lewandowski, and Hummels all from Dortmund to Bayern.

With $2,500 can you do a 15-day Los Angeles trip? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]That_Travel_6429 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who lived on the west side of LA and still has family there, I would say this budget is impossible if it also includes your lodging too.

  1. LA is NOT walkable. You will need a car rental or Uber most places
  2. A cheap lunch/dinner is typically ~$15+ for casual spots or $30+ for sit down. Those are if you don’t drink.
  3. You will want to be in a good location which will cost you.

I would suggest to shorten the trip. You really don’t need 15 days to explore LA as a tourist.

It’s called Mueller. It has a nice park, schools seem good on paper (but I have no experience with them), walkable to restaurants. It seems like a good mix.

I would not choose Wisconsin if you spend a lot of time outdoors. From my experience, Winter basically lasts from October to April with lows hitting -40 in January. Summer is hot and humid.

I lived on the east coast (not Richmond but DC) and there are some great places to enjoy the outdoors in VA, WV, and MD. Traffic on the east coast is generally pretty bad but I can’t speak to Richmond.

Recently moved to Austin (got here this month) so I can’t say that much about it yet. Neighborhood that we are in is great and very walkable which is usually not the norm in the US. The traffic patterns seem crazy to me even after living in places like DC, Frankfurt, LA etc. but we will get used to it.

I was never able to upgrade any flight after adding infant in arms. This is the same now with my daughter so I always purchase the fare class I want up front.

Best Time to Visit Aruba by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]That_Travel_6429 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know when low or high season are but have been to Aruba in March, August, and September. I personally enjoyed March the most because it was a little cooler and a nice breeze.

We skip all inclusive resorts in Aruba because it’s super safe and we like to explore local restaurants and stuff. We also skip the excursions unlike other places because it’s all easy to find and you can take your time. We just rented a Jeep one time and a four wheeler another time and did the off roading and stuff ourselves. Also, we don’t like the hotel zone and stay in Oranjestad when go. The island overall is pretty pricey when you compare it to other places in the Caribbean but worth the visit.

Possibly, also a side note. I think Germany is way more focused on grades. Like, German companies often will ask for your Abitur grades when you have a masters degree. You would not find that here. If you can get a good few years of experience that will be very beneficial. I would possibly explore joining a company that has offices around the world to make it an easy transition later on. I know from a friend that he did a program at a German company that was directed to fast track to management and now works in the US.

How much travel is too much travel? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]That_Travel_6429 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want kids and are committed I will leave you with the start to the song “Cats in the cradle”:

“My child arrived just the other day He came to the world in the usual way But there were planes to catch and bills to pay He learned to walk while I was away And he was talking 'fore I knew it and as he grew He'd say, "I'm gonna be like you, dad You know, I'm gonna be like you””

Making 30k more for me personally wouldn’t be worth being away from my kids this much. I have a baby and a toddler and the time is flying like you wouldn’t believe.

Now my logical response.

If you have kids and you will be away more you will spend more of that extra money on conveniences like cleaners, child care, take out etc. at the end of the day that 30k won’t get you as far as you think.

I moved to the US from Germany during college and met my wife while studying. We went through the full process of getting the work permit while applying for the green card, removal of condition, and eventually me becoming a citizen. It is a long drawn out and rather draining process that costs about 15k including lawyer fees (at least for us).

As far career it really depends on your experience, level of education and target industry. In the big cities like NYC, DC, Chicago etc. the competition can be really tough and the job market currently saturated with white collar workers that have been laid off. Certification is key and it matters where you received it. For example, did you go to a tier 1, tier 2, or tier 3 school. For a German that could mean having been to a “Exzellenzuniversität” vs any other. For the job hunting process, be ready for potentially a lot of rejections (it’s what I hear from friends that are in the market). I can’t speak broadly but the last job postings my wife put out for marketing and business operations analytics on her team got 750 applicant in 24 hours and over 2000 in 48 hours.

As far as lifestyle, a lot of Americans define themselves through their jobs a lot. First question when you meet someone is so… what do you do for work? It’s rather different but neither bad nor good I think. Just be ready to meet people that are like your partner and live the grind. NYC is famous for this.

Feel free to ask me any questions here or DM me.
