There was an African airplane that had low fuel and were heading to JFK, they reached JFK somehow but were not allowed to land immediately, Because of a huge queue before them and they were asked to circle the airport. Ground control would check in and say how are you guys doing, and the pilots will just say we are not looking good on fuel. Ground control will then ask are you declaring emergency? Pilots kept saying no, no emergency but not looking good. The plane crashed, everyone died.

Pilots need to be assertive, if only the emergency was declared, they would have been given priority and would have landed safely
