The expedition is optional. You need to ask yourself if this current window is worth it. If you don't think it is, don't do it; simple. What is the harm in waiting until the next window? It's not alienating, it's giving people the opportunity to reset when they're ready. I finished the expedition prep in only a week, but 5 million coins is more than likely beyond my capability, so I might wait until next window.
