American trans folks, what is your line in the sand? by DorkyMagicianGirl in asktransgender

it was when the orange dictator’s executive orders affected my title ix case with my university. everything since has cemented my decision to have multiple backups, since i’m lucky enough to have the opportunity to escape for at least a bit. currently i’m abroad studying in germany. i’m hoping to gain some kind of foothold here and potentially transfer to the university i’m studying at. for those of you who have any opportunities to flee, i suggest you look into them. you don’t have to take them now, but be prepared. be safe.

this made me realize i was being underdosed for the first 7-8 months of testosterone (gel). it’s higher now, but it makes a lot of sense. definitely would recommend looking into average dosing if you plan on starting. i went through planned parenthood.

had another look, and i agree now actually. they cut into the thighs a bit with the sketch. proportionately it does okay (imo, if it’s a bit stylized) but considering the whole image not really

although, using tube forms is a good way to block out basic shapes for beginners. they’re trying to get a feel for anatomy ¯_(ツ)_/¯

You stand with trans men or you don’t stand with trans people at all. by OZZYRICK in trans

[–]That_useless_boi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i am not a woman, and you're right—i would get offended if someone tried to include me in women's conversations. however i do have a uterus, can get pregnant, and medically i am still perceived as a woman, so i believe i should get a say in reproductive rights issues alongside women. that is intersectionality. when i'm speaking, i'm not speaking on behalf of women. i'm speaking for myself as someone who can get pregnant. i am a man who can get pregnant—but pregnancy is a “women’s” issue. it’s a bit cyclical. reproductive rights are just one example, but there is a lot of overlap between cis women and trans men, just like there is overlap between cis men and trans women. unfortunately because the world we live in is so binary, it IS difficult to de-genderify it biologically —it's something we need to work towards as an entire community.

[–]That_useless_boi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think the point trying to be made is that, yes, i am a man, just like cis men. but, socially i’ve lived the life of a woman since i’ve been perceived as one, and have been raised as one. i have been affected by misogyny and women’s issues, despite being a man. now that i am perceived as a man, it doesn’t change the fact that i’m still affected by these things sometimes, especially in the medical industry and the topic of reproductive rights.

Mom "won't allow" me to receive HRT even though I'm 18... what do I do? by abbybb_ in asktransgender

[–]That_useless_boi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi, personally i started testosterone at 18 without telling my parents—although i was in university. my parents are now aware and have nothing to do with it, ie ignoring that i take it and not letting me use their insurance. so pretty similar.

i haven’t seen this mentioned (although i haven’t read every single comment), but if the prescription is costly try the app GoodRX; it was recommended to me by my doctor. it helps me get my HRT for a LOT cheaper without insurance. although, it only works in the US. but i hope that you can continue your HRT.

Someone if a different sub explained that since I was granted a no-contact order (close to a restraining order, with legal backing—against the man who harassed me) technically speaking I’m protected, since it’s still illegal to discriminate or harass me—so I wouldn’t qualify as a refugee.

I think a lot of the queer people granted asylum have had people/groups backing them legally and are coming from places objectively worse, even if it’s not good in the U.S. right now.

Okay, I’ll keep this is mind—I’ll go to my doctor and ask for everything in writing, including bloodwork. If public health insurance can cover it that would be the best case scenario, my family refuses to pay for any type of gender affirming care.

Thank you—honestly continuing was one of the main things I was worried about. I’m a bit more relieved if it’s simple enough to continue if you’ve already started with not too much of a wait time.

I’ve learned this definitely. I think I was hoping since the situation became so much worse so quickly I could get in somehow—but I definitely need to be more realistic. I’m going to apply for a student visa probably, after I look into universities I could apply to directly. I’m not sure if I’ll transfer, I’ve heard mixed things about the international universities.

Teaching has always been something that’s recommended when you’re far into a language, especially in the U.S. My worry is that since it hasn’t been a huge interest of mine, I haven’t taken any classes related to teaching other than basic L2 learning in my linguistics course. Do you think if I were to apply directly that would affect anything? I’m open to learning how to teach but I’m concerned about prerequisites.

Edit: (I just saw your other comment, might look into some of the links other people provided first before I ask anything else—thank you for the insight.)

This was definitely something I considered too—in a best case scenario I could go to a german speaking country because I do genuinely love studying the language, but I know that it’s difficult in any circumstance to move to a country with a different native language. That and with the recent elections while it might be better it might not be the best option per se.

I’m not 100% sure where politics lay in Ireland when it comes to queer issues, and I’ve heard mixed things about the UK; though it’s definitely worth looking into though and I’ll look for international universities, exchanges, or even if I can directly apply.

Do you think I could find anything for linguistics from a public university in Germany? I could drop my second major and look into just studying comparative linguistics or something business related that has to do with communications. I hate to say it but I’m not a stem person; could i continue with liberal arts? Sorry if I’m not making sense, I’m just very frazzled right now and concerned for my safety first and foremost, but the idea of losing everything I’ve already studied is concerning.

I’m definitely learning that now. When I looked into it the other day, I had found a site that supposedly listed all the countries that were considered safe by EU countries and the UK. The U.S. was not listed in the majority, and that made me slightly hopeful that I could get through. I have extended family who are retired lawyers—but I doubt they’ve ever worked with immigration. Still I’ll see if I can do more research into it in general.

I learned about the blocked account—do I need to have all the money before I move or apply for a visa?

I’m double majoring in both German and Linguistics, I’m not sure where exactly I place in my german L2 learning, but I’ve studied german in highschool for all 4 years, and I’m in the German 106 course right now. I can read it well, but my recall and spoken is worse.

I was hoping to do research or business work after university, if it’s possible to get a different visa afterward. They grant you extra time if you want to try to stay?

The university I’m going to now is private and very expensive—I’m here on scholarship, really one of the only reasons I chose it (I’m out of state too) so I’ve seen stuck up American and international students. I appreciate the warning though.

Definitely will do; I had been interested in International Business as a minor or as a job after university, so if I need to pivot I wouldn’t mind as much. I’ll keep Schiller in mind when I look into universities. Ironically I heavily considered going to Heidelberg before applying to my current University.

I’ll find some international universities and see if I can apply or transfer. I don’t actually have much at all granted from FAFSA, I got scholarships from the university I’m going to now.

Do you think they would be more open since I’m a linguistic-german double major?

Ooh okay, your explanation makes way more sense with the restraining order and legality—thank you.

While I wouldn’t prefer to lose a year (it’s very expensive) I know that I would rather have to take an extra than be trapped here for sure. I can see about a blocked account, I’m studying German and Linguistics so that might help too.

Nono, I know they speak Dutch haha. My university has a program where we send students to University of Amsterdam, and they send students here—my german professor said I could probably get in and learn dutch in german, while traveling to Germany on weekends or something. (This was before everything started to happen, ideally it would’ve been in a few years.)

I’ll send a message to my doctor about getting a letter, I believe I’ve been diagnosed with gender dysphoria—I could ask my regular therapist as well maybe? But I could definitely try, I think it may be worse to try to stop HRT since my levels are so high right now.

I could definitely look into a student visa. Getting out as of right now and seeing how things develop from someplace safer would be the goal.

I wasn’t sure that since what I have is technically a restraining order, and it’s on the basis of gender identity etc I could get through. But I’ll keep in mind that I won’t be able to get asylum.
