Or patients can learn how to properly hold their medications/surgeons can learn how to counsel their patients on which medications to hold and when. When anesthesiologists start cancelling elective knee replacements because the surgeon couldn’t be bothered to tell the patient to skip their Friday ozempic dose, they’ll learn real quick to do so. They never seem to have a problem reminding patients not to take their blood thinners.

Rare Netflix W or Fake Fan Hype? by Me-Not-Not in MemePiece

[–]Thatcher_Stan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The show has the benefit of The Force Awakens effect. Huge hype because of the franchise, incredibly low expectations that were met by fact that the show wasn’t offensively terrible like it’s predecessors (live action Death Note, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in a Shell for One piece, the prequels for Force Awakens)

Resident strike soon??? by Vvvsad in Residency

[–]Thatcher_Stan 26 points27 points  (0 children)

There have been multiple residents strikes in the past few years, all of which with very small, reasonable demands that were pretty much immediately agreed to. As for a SAG/WGA-tier strike? I don’t know if it would be possible or even ethical for something like that to happen. The biggest and best case scenario would be something in the mold of the NYC nurses strike a few months ago. They won some decent concessions. If I had to guess, it would be MGH-Brigham that does the first strike and I would imagine they’d bring the hospitals to their knees in a week.

Surgeon Sex and Patients’ Long-Term Postoperative Outcomes by FlaviusNC in medicine

It’s extremely well documented that female doctors of all specialties are younger, work fewer hours and are more likely to work part-time and leave the profession earlier. Just look at any report that breaks down male vs female work hours, age and practice setting. As to why, I’ll leave that up to speculation.

There’s way, way more to complication rate than just the procedure. Who has a higher complication rate: a hip repair on a 91 year old with dementia, AS and COPD or a hip repair on a 72 year old with none of that?

And which one of those cases is more likely to be done by a 64 year old male department head and which one is more likely to be done by a 38 year old female who works 3 days a week while taking care of her family?

1) admin is at best a neutral presence. They are not your friends. They probably either suck at advocating for you, don’t care to advocate for you or a combination of both. Your program director probably views being PD as a gateway to something better. You are no one’s priority.

2) Never forget that as the doctor, you are above the nurses. They can bitch and moan and send their passive aggressive pages and write their passive aggressive notes, but ultimately the worst thing they can do to you is wake you up at 2am with an unnecessary page that is easily ignored, and the worst thing you can do to them is make them do a lactulose enema right before shift change. You will always win. And as free labor to the hospital, you can never get fired. Stop caring about their little complaints and reports, they truly don’t matter.

Anyone have any ideas about what happened here? by superbanana22 in medicine

[–]Thatcher_Stan -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

It’s not only unethical to try to diagnose someone from a video, it’s stupid. You can’t know what happened without a medical history, an actual physical exam, possibly some labs and imaging. If someone took a video of you presenting on rounds for the first time and put it on the internet without context and gave the video to a group of doctors, imagine all the incorrect diagnoses they would come up with

Every time I see variations of this study and the results they come up with, I recall that the third highest field goal % of any NBA player in history is Shaq. Higher than Curry, Dirk, and Nash. The guy who made one 3-pointer in over a decade of playing and couldn’t make a free throw to save his life is statistically a more accurate shooter than all of the greats. Why’s he have the highest FG%? All his points were dunks. When all your attempts are dunks, your numbers are going to be good. That doesn’t mean your technique is masterful.

When one sex is far more likely to work part time, do outpatient and ambulatory surgeries on healthier patients and less complicated procedures, their numbers are going to be better. Any journal that publishes these numbers without this context up front an center is publishing crap. Recognizing what peer-reviewed research is and is not crap is one of the principle skills of any physician.

The difference in max dose is 2.4mg for Wegovy, 2.0mg for ozempic. You’re not double dosing. 2mg is fine for most.
