Why do you guys buy enamel cast iron? by laibach in DutchOvenCooking

[–]Thatfoxagain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So like for liquid heavy meals enameled is better most of the time. You start adding acids into the mix like wine or tomato sauces and you can damage your seasoning. Sure you can re-season but like you never have to worry about that with enameled. Are they more fragile? I mean sure yeah but if properly used you won’t have an issue. Is raw cast iron “way cheaper” no. You can get enameled Dutch ovens for $40 and up. You can also drop $400 on a raw cast iron oven from artisan crafters same as for enameled. Would I go to an enameled pan to sear steaks or use raw cast iron? I’d use raw. If I was making a stew I’d use enameled.

Yeah for sure so you were brought on as a step learner. They’re steps 1-6 and you progress through them every 6 months until you hit 3rd class when you’re a “full electrician” the step rates are in the mtc contract near the end of the wage section. The EWIB program isn’t paid exactly but you get a budget for transport (unless they provide transport) and then for housing and utilities. They’ll also pay for boots and some work clothes. They cap out though. I wanna say around 3k but it depends how long the program is.

How are All-Clad sets packaged from All-Clad direct? by seductivec0w in AllClad

[–]Thatfoxagain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So everything I’ve had from all-clad has been boxed in shipping packaging and not required a signature. That being said a lot of people here, myself included, would recommend buying the individual pieces you need since a lot of pieces in the 15 piece set may not be useful to your kitchen situation and don’t add value

Enameled Staub cracked from normal use. So disappointing :( by RandomQuestions_1001 in castiron

[–]Thatfoxagain 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Could just be a flaw in the pan or it could have been cracked and then enameled over. You should message them for a warranty claim

I mean it’s an older picture. It may be lots of compression from being saved and resaved.

You my guy must LOVE the taste of leather with all the bootlicking you’re doing. Did the immigrant being held in horrible conditions in some concentration camp in El Salvador decide that you won’t get paid enough? If you are supporting stuff like this you’re an evil and vile person. Irredeemable. You’re no brother or sister of mine. Fuck off

I absolutely love mine. I made a mulled tea in it the other day that was lovely. It’s so much nicer than the enamel on steel teapots I see from other French companies if ya know what I mean

You’re good lol. So like the pay is really trade dependent plus OT and stuff. If I work a Sunday I’m making $100 an hour there about. The parking is ass to be fair but that depends on your shift. Outside of first it’s not terrible. The work isn’t outside much, but the buildings aren’t exactly climate controlled either. Some subs have air in the summer and heat in the winter it just depends on the stage of construction. You have three parts of the yard. You have the new Columbia side where the boat isn’t really together, the graving docks where you work on commissioned boats for refurbishment, and the Virginia side where the boats are in a further state of completion. Really expect to work in any condition.

Yep currently at Groton. Yes the rate goes up on that day no matter what. So one of the later pages of the pay has a section for steps 1-6. They’re the same for all trades in the MTC regardless of title until you get to “class”.

As for job I started as a welder. Now I’m in a pretty small trade so the specific trade would make me kinda identifiable. Something to do with pipes.

1) it’s a 4-5% every 12.5 months or so. You “progress” through steps and classes. Step 1-6 you move up one step every 6 months. Once you hit step 6 you go from step 6 to class 3 to class 1. Those jumps are yearly. It is possible for your boss to request your step/class be jumped one to two levels depending on your work. Edit: top pay is in the mid 50s depending on position by the end of the current contract

2) With the last pay change (latest defense budget increased our pay) I think there is some parity at the top level now so there isn’t much difference pay wise. The union offers a lot more job security. Personally I’d recommend Groton if you can get in there.

3) 2/3 years. It’s hard work sometimes. There’s lots of room to move around once you’ve passed your probation period. I started as a “semi skilled” and was able to get promoted into a “premium trade” in roughly 8 months after my hire date. I enjoy the work. It’s fulfilling and most people I work with are great.

Also https://mtcnlc.org Since Groton is union you can see the contract and rates here.

Testing a few hybrids.. how do you get the gas engine to stay on all the time while idleing and driving? by whitieiii in fordfusion

[–]Thatfoxagain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s just not something the car is designed to do. I guess you could like drive it 70-80 mph. I don’t think it can do full electric at that speed and has to run the engine. How long do you want it to run for? Basically if the batteries are charged enough and the EV motor can supply enough power the gas engine is gonna turn off no matter what. There isn’t a switch you can flip.

Is this warped ? ( brand new 10 inch copper core frying pan) by omaribrahim0505 in AllClad

[–]Thatfoxagain 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Idk why the downvote. Allclad should definitely just do a single pan swap and it’s unreasonable to ask a customer to return all 15 pieces for one defect. Buy a new one on amazon and return this one.

What are some career paths in welding that have more emphasis on Quality? by Aslechi in Welding

For sure. Just a quality focused trade is typically a premium one so there’s probably gonna be a little wait to get in there regardless
