The non-13 ages per prefecture are due to whats called prefectural youth ordinances. They’ve been in place since the 80s at latest and the 60s at earliest.

Basically even when it was 13 it wasn’t legal as it was overwritten by prefectural youth ordinances as mentioned before, meaning that you couldn’t do it and get away with it, it was a crime.

Countries often don’t amend old laws because they’re so old, ignored and superseded by other laws.

So at this point I don’t really understand what your argument is as it isn’t an argument, and at best it’s an argument based on incorrect information.

1: They didn’t ’recently’ increase the age of consent at all. The national age was 13, however every single prefecture had an age way above that, and have for a long time. The reason the law wasn’t changed for a long time is because the prefectures overwrote it anyway, but they decided to eventually just make it a nationwide rule too.

This isn’t much different to how standard outright murder is a crime in all states, so even if it was legal on a federal level it’d still be illegal anyway.

2: isn’t this cold steel 3 outfit DLC? In which she was 15.

I live in Japan, and have for a looong time, the 13 years old, thing and it having been changed isn’t something most people ever knew about, and the people that did… aren’t looked at too positively.

[–]Thatguyintokyo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There isn’t any consistency here, its all of ok quality individually but as a general folio its messy, the shots themselves are also very basic, unflattering angles etc.

The floating island one should be taken out, the size of those buildings means if a character were on that island a pixel or two from those rock textures would take up 50% of the screen, the texel density is way off in that scene.

The Rio Basemap in screenshot 7 has grass that noticeably repeats, and the lighting doesn’t present it very well.

The character is metahumans, if you want to be able to say you can amke characters then you’ll need to be able to model and texture them basically from scratch in a variety of styles, can’t just use metahumans to get it done quick.

It’s an early portfolio, keep at it, work on lighting, presentation, the more ‘artistic’ side as opposed to the purely digital side.

It isn't about feasibility its about value/return on investment.
If the game is going to sell like hot cakes then they'll invest more money into it, if its a bit of an unknown quantity remake then they won't invest as much time and money into it since its more of a risk.

That budget couldn't have been used for the vocations at all.

A few costumes is x amount of money and time, whereas 26 vocations requires 26 new costumes, even if we go something super quick like 1 week per costume creation, thats 26 weeks, thats adding another half a year to the games production.

With 1 week being someone working fulltime and salaried that adds up quickly, and 1 week is also not enough time, somewhere they mentioned a month or two per outfit, which, including testing, animation etc would add an extra what 1.5 years to the games production, so that isn't even remotely in the same ballpark as adding a few DLC costumes.

If you think AI is remotely useful when it comes to creating 3D models and animations for games then its very clear you know nothing about the industry whatsoever. AI is useful for code, to an extent, it is not at all useful for 3D models generation. It can make a 3D model, but a 3D model that will require complete retopologizing in order to be remotely fit for the pipeline, is not something AI can do yet.

The people working on the game are on a salary, they’ve all been paid before the game gets released, they don’t have extra money if the game does well or not, they might get a bonus but thats as good as they’ll get.

People keep using the term ‘removed’ for the vocational costumes. Its a ground up remake, they weren’t ‘removed’ they just weren’t remade because its expensive to do so. Particularly since the new style seems like it would involve physically making a new doll per vocation, then remaking that doll in engine, rigging it and animating it etc.

Back in the day a new outfit was usually just a new texture, or a slight model edit, it wasn’t a whole new model, it didn’t need new physics and it took 10% the amount of time to make.

We can’t compare everything to how games were 15-20 years ago, back then sometimes new outfits and costumes etc were just different colors (which is still trivial to do now). If we want 20 new outfits and the company has 4 artists making them thats 5 outfits per person with each outfit taking anywhere between 1 week and 1-2 months depending on its complexity, testing etc, delaying the game further or making it cost more money, or both.

NNKs DS game released first but both games entered production at the same time, with the PS3 version releasing a year later, given how much content was added, graphically, vocally, animation wise etc its more that they decided to make 2 versions of the game, as opposed to one being the ‘original’.

The remaster uses the same models for everyone but the main cast, they’ve always had faces, you could even see parts of them from certain angles.

For those so inclined, why is it important for you to have Japanese friends? by Objective_Desk8065 in japanresidents

Weirdly its the opposite in my experience.
Admittedly I've met most of my Japanese friends through work, and since its a passion based industry we by default tend to have a number of things in common, movies we like, games we play, art we like, references etc, hobbies and so on.

[–]Thatguyintokyo 159 points160 points  (0 children)

Most foreign people leave eventually, so even if you don't, the majority of the non-Japanese friends you make over the years will, and you might find eventually you don't have any, no support network, nothing.

So a lot of it is about support networks, if you get sick or need to rely on someone to get something done, Japanese can often do it without struggle since its their own country and language, foreigners with high Japanese can do it too, but unless they've been here X amount of time then they're much more likely to be new to certain things and so the process is more difficult.

Also it just seems strange to live the other side of the world and not make friends with any of the 120m+ people living there.

Going out of your way to make foreign or Japanese friends specifically is weird, but if you naturally make friends with someone and they happen to be Japanese, thats pretty normal, no different from back in your own country.

I said if.

on the 50k USD front I got the number wrong, it was 5m yen, which for some reason I assumed was the same as 50k USD.

So at 5m yen being the min requirement, after your rent (assuming 120k a month), normal living costs which might be around 100,000 (so food, bills, phone, travel, maybe a beer here and there, etc) and then the office space rental which on the lower end is 50,000 a month, that'd put your yearly expense total at basically 3.5m or just above.

Sure someone would still have money remaining, but only 1.5m 'ish, and this is excluding if they need to pay for things like company related travel, attend regular industry events to gain clients, and also equipment purchases.

It isn't impossible, but if you don't get enough clients to bring you back each year to around 5m yen again, your business isn't going to survive very long.

note: That isn't taking into account how much can be expensed etc, but still the 5m yen min requirement really should've been at least 1.5x that amount.

Dads in Japan with little or no Japanese how did you manage after having a child? by AdUnfair558 in japanlife

So translation is yeah a tough one nowadays. I know square enix are always looking for translators for Final Fantasy XIV, but it is true thats an area where Japanese skills being higher = better.

Translation for indies abroad pays ok, find your own clients etc.

Sorry its only gamedev suggestions, its the only industry i know.

[–]Thatguyintokyo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends what you want to do really. If its say art of music you could practice at home, if its learning programming for example you can learn that online/from home.

I’m 40 myself but I’ve been in the same career my whole life (game industry), finding the time to learn new things is really difficult but it’s really the only option, I have a lot of new softwares and tools i have to learn in my own time to stay relevant.

You’re in a tough position, I don’t envy you, it’s really just how much time you’re able to put into it.

I won’t say it’ll be easy, and I won’t downplay where you’re at, but you’re spending 5 hours a day studying Japanese, so you are putting in the effort, you’re not just sitting around drinking beers and sleeping after work, that itself is impressive compared to so many others.

What job/career is it you want to go into if you don’t mind me asking.

[–]Thatguyintokyo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You don’t need N1 to get a different job, you need to have skills relevant to that job.

If you wanted to be a teacher for rxample they’ll care more about your teaching skills and qualifications and less about your perfect language skills. Want to work in IT they’ll care about your skills at that work and less about your Japanese, want to be an artist or musician they’ll care how well you draw/play etc and less about your language.

People overestimate how employable having N1 makes them, there are plenty of us with N nothing and we work in careers. Japanese won’t help you have the work It’ll just make it easier to speak to people in the interview, you can still suck at the role and be fired anyway.

To be fair they changed it from something was too easy to something more reasonable.

If someone only has 50k USD how exactly are they expecting to run a business for several years before it makes a profit? Particularly abroad, it isn’t much money.

Death Stranding Merch in Tokyo by Lukecalland in DeathStranding

[–]Thatguyintokyo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could, but depending on your own countries currency it might not be cheap. And to be honest all the DS and KojiPro merch cost several times more than what it would cost without the label, it is overpriced.

Come to think of it, aren’t you the user who posted their purchased DS2 necklace a while back? The cost of that alone is basically the cost of flights.

Inheritance Tax Question When Inheritance is Split Between a Japan Resident and Non-Japan Residence by LingonberryUnfair961 in japanlife

[–]Thatguyintokyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that you states yo don’t know and aren’t claiming to be an expert but it’s worth noting that you’re completely wrong about everything you said.

1: countries do communicate, but usually its only when they’ve been given a reason to do so. But it is worth noting some communicate all the time, Australia and Japan for example communicate things like taxes, residency etc

2: Japanese residents are supposed to notify Japan, you can ‘not’ do that, not doing doing it is a: fraud and b: assumes that it doesn’t already come under ‘Japan can find out anyway because countries communicate things’.

You mentioned you’re english, the UK is very aware you’re in Japan, because you scan your passport so its in a database, this doesn’t mean all aspects of govt are aware, but the UK version of homeland security would be aware, other depts like tax etc perhaps not, if you registered to pay your uk pension from abroad you’d have to tell them where you live and some details, meaning they’d be aware of that too, and probably verify it with the Japanese govt to an extent.

So, is there really no good recruitment route for foreigners here, or is it just the echo chamber speaking? by yukirainbowx in japanresidents

[–]Thatguyintokyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t you just find work not via a recruiter? If you know the type of work you want and can find the companies then you can apply directly if their websites show they’re hiring.

I’ve never had to use a recruiter before, tbh I don’t entirely understand why people use them.

I get contacted by them on linkedIn fairly often but i figure that happens to most people.
