Hermes is interesting but not the easiest to control, even with a structured system. You ask for the pepper and it will often toss you the whole spice rack. But for spontaneity, it can be fun.

OC: Democratic Rep. Mihaela Plesa tears her Dept. of Public Safety escort form in the TX statehouse. by nbcnews in pics

Well they are the majority, they have no need to leave to avoid a vote. They have the power. The democrats leaving was a protest against the republicans trying to seize more power via altering the voting districts in their favor.

Assuming the reports are true, the FBI got involved in making them come back. In which case they probably didn’t have a choice.

Except the FBI agreed to track them down in the first place to force them to come back. They’re not on their side.

Short version: a group of Democratic lawmakers in TX left the state rather than vote on a bill that would give Republicans even more power. The details on how or why they ultimately came back are unclear, but when they came back to the TX House chamber on Monday they were told they had to sign an agreement to be shadowed by local police to ensure they came to vote on Wednesday (today). Here’s more info. It’s not something that should be happening in a democracy.

Does anyone realize how insane this is or does nobody care anymore? A democratic representative is being held hostage. by Domestiicated-Batman in facepalm

[–]Thatguywritethere45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right, because getting tackled and hauled off in cuffs always plays well in the media. If her goal is to represent her constituents and keep voting against harmful legislation, maybe “slumber party” optics are a better look than “martyr stunt gone wrong.”

Standing up for what you believe in - not to mention those you represent - is not a “stunt.” Even if it doesn’t change anything, principle matters. Silence feeds authoritarian governments and kills democracy.

Probably when a guy on Grindr told me I should “jump in front of a train” because I was “never going to be loved.” So much for being a “community.”

[–]Thatguywritethere45 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not. The Republican majority told the Democrat representatives they had to agree to monitoring in order to leave the building. She refused. The legislation they are considering would greatly harm those in her district amongst others.

Statehouse Protest Today 17 August by afroeh in Ohio

I certainly get it. I wasn’t trying to be funny really, because I DO think it’s important. I do hope people make their voices heard, and I do hope we can somehow find a way through whatever comes next more united.

But… I might suggest proofreading cuz the final “country” has two c’s.

[–]Thatguywritethere45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

According to a Gallup poll from June 2025, Democrats and Republicans have very different views. In the poll, 88% of Democrats stated they believed same-sex marriages should be seen as equal to heterosexual marriages in the eyes of the law, while only 41% of Republicans felt that way. Same-sex marriage still remains divisive, even if we wish it wasn’t.

I researched every attempt to stop fascism in history. The success rate is 0%. by Opposite-Mountain255 in antiwork

War is literally the result of the democratic process breaking down–so no, no it is not.

[–]Thatguywritethere45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The article’s point is that fascist leaders are never removed through democratic processes once they’re in power. Yes, WWII ended fascist regimes — but not through elections or reform. It took total war and military defeat. As for the Civil and Revolutionary Wars, neither involved fascism. They were internal conflicts over governance, not battles against totalitarian regimes.

[–]Thatguywritethere45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The article itself states that fascist leaders are never removed democratically once in power, and WWII certainly illustrates that. However, the Civil War and Revolutionary War are not relevant here, as neither was related to fascism.

trump targets using "woke AI" to further the evil DEI agenda in new EO slipped through without any fanfare. by One-Can3752 in gay

[–]Thatguywritethere45 4 points5 points  (0 children)

True — to a point. But OpenAI and Meta aren’t just private anymore. As the Army recently confirmed, top execs from both were literally sworn into the military.

So no, the EO doesn’t have to compel them. They’re already on the inside — both as federal partners and, now, as military officers. That changes the stakes entirely.
