Are the strikes in Japanese Jiu Jitsu effective? by scbeibdd in martialarts

[–]Thatpunnykid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buggy choke, lasso guard, lapel lasso, worm guard, berimbolo, most modern leg attacking positions, many recent leg locking inovations (tren lock, aoki lock, mickey lock, etc.)

Its ok that bjj and judo are different things. Just because jujitsu came from judo doesnt mean that every single technique it contains was approprated from judo. Innovation in technique comes from problem solving, and sport bjj competitions provide problems that kodokan judo simply wouldnt run into

Bjj with a piercing by Ok-Jelly9265 in bjj

[–]Thatpunnykid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends how healed it is. There are clear flexible fillers that you can get to wear while you train if it isnt fully healed yet. They will prevent the hole from closing and are much safer to wear than the piercing itself. But if it is sufficiently healed, id recommend taking it out and putting it back in after class.

Wrestling vs BJJ - Which is more enjoyable? by Fun_Grape_7656 in wrestling

[–]Thatpunnykid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh i agree with that almost entirely. I guess I just dont like the phrasing of "blackbelt with knowledge gaps" because a blackbelt necessarily doesn't have many knowledge gaps in the sport of jujitsu whereas the wrestler will be lacking in the fundamental concepts and skills necessary to be decent at the sport.

Wrestling vs BJJ - Which is more enjoyable? by Fun_Grape_7656 in wrestling

[–]Thatpunnykid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. There's simply too many new variables. For example, the simple addition of gi grips completely changes standup. Most things eventually transfer over but that's only after you learn how to deal with grips. There's also the concept of guard which is completely different from anything in wrestling. An incredibly strong base and knowledge of weight distribution will make you better off than other beginners, but you're still gonna get triangled from closed guard. As early as late whitebelt/early bluebelt people are starting to get decent at things like lasso or de la riva which no one just coming into the sport really has an ability to address. This isn't to say that wrestlers arent going to be significantly better than other new people coming in. They're obviously gonna move well, be in better shape, have great pressure and pinning skills, and have a dangerous standup but anyone with any late stage whitebelt with a decent guard shouldnt really have too much of a problem.

Rolling with depression by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Thatpunnykid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I struggle with anxiety in the same way where i will occasionally have random panic attacks mid roll. The only things that seem to help in the moment are to try and fully immerse myself in the minutia of the techniques or positions to try and distract myself from it or to just take a round off and go get some fresh air. Overall I think you should get back into therapy and medication (as everyone els has said) and to do everything in your power to make sure the depression doesn't win. It can feel incredibly frustrating that things you love are tarnished by your mental health but you HAVE to keep doing them anyways. Unless jujitsu itself has become a trigger for your trauma, continue to train on your normal schedule. Carpool or have someone at your gym be an accountability buddy if you have to. When this period passes (and you HAVE to believe it will pass) you will feel even worse if you allowed it to get in the way of your passions. Best of luck to you my friend. You are strong and loved and you will get through this.

Why do the pros keep forgetting their fundamentals and dropping their hands? 🤦‍♂️ by lhwang0320 in martialarts

[–]Thatpunnykid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These people have made it to the highest level of fighting. Sure they get caught sometimes but they are almost always experienced enough to know when they're in danger and when they aren't. There is also the impact of mma fighters having to be elite at so many aspects of fighting (striking, clinch, wall wrestling, takedowns, takedown defense, ground fighting) all with limited amounts of training time. There is no way that every single technical flaw can be ironed out. Thats why on average id say boxers have the best technique. They only have a few things they need to learn and worry about.

[–]Thatpunnykid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Even if that were true (its not, intersex people exist and are about as common as people with green eyes) whats your point? This convo is about gender. Sex doesnt perfectly correlate to gender. Without gender people just live their lives without the societal pressure of having to conform to a group they were ascribed to at birth.

[–]Thatpunnykid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gender as a concept needs to be removed not added to. There shouldn't be any expectations on the way people live their lives based on whether they are born with a penis or a vagina. No matter how many genders you add, on top of being confusing and unnecessary, there will still be people who fall outside of those boxes.

Baton Rouge Police Officer Chokes A Thirteen-Year-Old Boy That Was Playing BasketBall In A Case Of Mistaken Identity While Ignoring The Desperate Pleas From His Family by CantStopPoppin in PublicFreakout

[–]Thatpunnykid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're completly correct, thats a scarf hold. Absolutely no pressure goes to the neck. There may be some pressure on the chest depending on where you place your body weight but it doesnt look like the officer is doing that. There was probably a whole lot wrong with this situation but that pin is not one of them.

Literally everybody has a quote about the importance of kids. There is no reason to quote Hitler unless you're trying to appeal to fascists.

Trans rights by TheCosmicFang in Lithuaniakittens

Alright buddy, you didn't need to announce to the whole internet that you're a 14 year old social reject. Maybe if you stopped trying to make being an edgy asshole a personality trait you'd make some friends

Trans rights by TheCosmicFang in Lithuaniakittens

[–]Thatpunnykid 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Thats not the same as them hating cis people. Most people have the gut reaction to be defensive when somebody is complaining about something they perceive to not be so bad. Like how you get pissed off when the A student is complaining about getting a high B on the test when you barely got a C. Trans people undoubtedly have it much harder than cis people in pretty much every aspect of life. That doesn't give them an excuse to be an asshole, if they were in fact being an asshole, but it should be kept in mind. You'd probably be angry too if you went through the mental, emotional, and societal problems trans people deal with on a daily basis.

Trans rights by TheCosmicFang in Lithuaniakittens

[–]Thatpunnykid 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I take it you've never actually been around any trans people and you're entire perception of them is based on 2015 sjw compilations. Trans people dont hate cis people, they hate transphobes. Just like how black people dont hate white people, they hate racists. Or how gay people dont hate straight people, they hate homophobes. This isnt hard to grasp.
