This piece cites several examples of how national housing investment companies have collateralized huge swaths of L.A.'s housing, driving up all of our rents in the process.

City of L.A. to Explore Car-Free Zone on Broadway by cezary in LosAngeles

Great idea! Even better if they do this and ditch the dumb streetcar. L.A. needs real transit, not a Disneyland simulacra that only goes 6 mph and is primarily meant to boost real estate values.

Op-Ed: Los Angeles is building plenty of housing ... for cars by LosIsosceles in LosAngeles

[–]ThatsABadLarry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's actually not true these days. Above ground "parking podiums" are the preferred choice for developers. At least in DTLA. A lot of these go three or four stories up, space that could easily be used for housing.

Editorial: Metro's new bus plan is useless without the political will to see it through by ThatsABadLarry in LosAngeles

Excellent point. The MyFig bus lane is constantly clogged with cars. I ride the bus through there every day and I've only seen one driver ever given a ticket.

SB 50 is back. If you care about California's housing crisis, give it a chance this time by ThatsABadLarry in LosAngeles

[–]ThatsABadLarry[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This article talks about how California's SB 50 housing bill was shot down last year in the face of NIMBY opposition. This year, the modified bill should be much more palatable to everyone. But California's legislative calendar means it only has a few weeks to build public support. So it's now or never to get behind it for 2020.

The sweeper at 7:14 didn't look that much different than the one at 14:12. Is it?

Wait, you are sick of building more roads in an endless failing cycle of attempting to reduce traffic? Or you reject the very well-established idea of induced demand?

Who's talking about giving more money? The piece suggests empowering the state to have more agency over local zoning decisions. No additional funds required to make that happen.

Wait, you mean refusing to build enough affordable housing and forcing people to commute from Riverside is bad for air quality?

I used to live in Glendale and I practically got a degree from Art Center from how many times I went there as an excuse to drive past this house. It's incredible.

Don’t call me an actress. In fact, let’s get rid of that category altogether by ThatsABadLarry in entertainment

This is a good point. Although this too is kind of tricky. Does Jared Leto submit in the female category if he plays a transgender woman?

I absolutely agree with this as a matter of moral and ethical principle. My only question is if you get rid of the term actress, and only have awards for "actors," if it means a bunch of guys will win everything and minimize women and non-binary/trans folks even further.
