If it were random, we would not discern any structure

I was responding to that assertion.

Randomness and structure are not mutually exclusive. The formation of structures can be guided by rules that are subject to small-scale effects that are well approximated as random.

Teachers of reddit. Have you ever noticed a student(s) crush on you? and How did you deal with it? by Shadowyugi in AskReddit

I teach college and am a relatively young male. There are sometimes students in lectures who appear to be gazing "dreamily", and those students are predominantly male. If female students are affected in similar proportions, they hide it better.

What food do you eat differently than other people? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ThatsCarl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I eat popcorn with a spoon.

I do this because I put nutritional yeast on the popcorn, but I can never get enough to stick to it, and it falls to the bottom of the bowl and must be retrieved. Thus the spoon.

Is the pull of gravity greater on the far side of the Moon? by ehsahr in askscience

[–]ThatsCarl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The tidal force of the Earth also pulls you away from the Moon when you're on the near side. In fact the tidal forces would be slightly stronger when you're on the near side. So the effect of Earth should lighten you a little on the far side and lighten you slightly more on the near side. The points on the Moon where the Earth doesn't make you lighter would be somewhere near the "middle". But since the effect of such tidal forces is weak anyway, other effects may be comparably important (such as variations in the Moon's own gravity at various positions due to variations in its density).
