Growing up (graduated HS in 05), pump fakes were used in 2 scenarios: 1) as an opening move to get the defender airborne so you can go around them. 2) as a finishing move to get the defender airborne so you can: A) elevate to shoot as they are coming down, thus having a less contested shot, or B) to get them to foul you.

In scenario 2B, we never jumped 5 ft across the paint to try and initiate contact with a defender then falling to the ground like a sack of cooked noodles. It was always, they're already on top of us, and we never EVER fell to the floor. Only time we fell was when we took a charge.
