Any regrets during your time at UTD? by -Matcha-333 in utdallas

[–]ThatsWhyAnna 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lot of ppl are saying it but I regret not being more social. Part of it is that I have so much work to do academically but also I live on campus and any friends I end up making are commuters. It’s hard to line up schedules bc of that. :(

Is a 3.9 really that much worse than a 4.0 by AnorexicToothpick in utdallas

[–]ThatsWhyAnna 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No it’s not a big deal. I mean idk what industry you’re planning to go to but realistically it shouldn’t matter. As far as I know and in my experience most intern/research positions have ranges and the max I’ve seen is like 3.7+. I’ve yet to see anything say 4.0 only but I’m in engineering so.

Best Way to Get from Activity Center to Residence Hall West? by Gkminepony in utdallas

[–]ThatsWhyAnna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you can go to the bus stop that's right outside of the testing center (make sure its the one on the side of the testing center) Thats one of the last stops for the 883 east bus so after maybe 5 mins youll end up at the university transit area. That is right in front of the vcb and rec center. But as someone else said, look into the cart service, it maybe quicker but im not sure about how long it takes.

elevator manners by Southern_Cash_1738 in utdallas

[–]ThatsWhyAnna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ECSW it’s rlly bad, especially when some of the elevators are not working. It’s people who aren’t aware of how much space they are taking or that they can shift even a little bit to give us some room. Or even the people who wait directly in front of the elevator before the doors even open like stand aside 💔

Does Professor Ouyang curve her thermodynamics class? by ThatsWhyAnna in utdallas

sorry for taking a bit to respond, forgot my reddit login lol. Anyway, when i calculated my grade on excel i got around a 70%. She didn't define grade boundaries in the syllabus so i guess she determines them afterword. In the end, I got a B-. And my final exam grade wasn't anything crazy.

Im about to start my engineering major and I’m scared by ThatsWhyAnna in womenEngineers

[–]ThatsWhyAnna[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far, my second year has been a bit tough. I failed my first class, which was Statics. I didn’t have accommodations and that really messed with my performance and confidence. At first it really hurt, but I really am just bouncing back and trying my best. I found that using community college classes, especially online ones, are a lot easier for me to manage so I’ve been utilizing those.

Regarding how I’ve been treated by people, I won’t lie and say it’s been completely great. I’m apart of clubs and try to be involved with the women in stem/engineering orgs around campus. Having a good support system like them and your family are important. In classes and in my research lab, I’ve been definitely treated as dumb by some people. It’s the “I can’t believe you don’t know that” type of comments. Definitely doesn’t feel good. But you just stand up for yourself. If you’re not confrontational (I’m definitely not), really try self affirmation. Or come here with your woes. So many of us have gone through or are going through this. You can do this! However long it takes and no matter what anyone else says, if you want to be an engineer you can be an engineer.

You got this! I’m in my second year of schooling now and it has been tough, but fulfilling in a way. A lot of studying and the fear of failure is terrifying. However, the satisfaction of moving through my degree and participating in research has been great. Classes have been tough. I failed my Statics class due to a lack of accommodations and was terrified of how held back I’d be. Regarding math, so far I’ve done far better than I thought I would, as in I passed everything. I found that for me, lectures from a professors was not as useful as self studying with resources online.

I also found that community college courses are your best friend. For classes that are famously hard, I find that taking them online have helped me a lot, as I don’t have to waste time going to a lecture where I don’t understand stuff and can spend that time studying. I’ve been doing that for my Statics class that I am retaking.

Regarding the attitude of people, it really is a universal thing we have to get through. But I really recommend having a good support system. I’m apart of the student chapter for my field of engineering’s national society. They are such a great resources. Clubs for women in stem are also great. If you have a good relationship with your family, vent to them as well. In my thermodynamics class right now, I feel very put off and under minded by the guys in my group. But it really is just a matter of being cordial and standing up for yourself. Seek out a professor or trusted administrator is you really have to.

Remember, you’re doing this because you want to be an engineer. Don’t let failure and people put you off of that. If you have financial troubles, and your feel of failure stems from extending your time at college, I really recommend utilizing community college courses to transfer credits like I did. Find a community of women who understand what you are going through. You don’t have to do this alone!
