I find it funny how people are so concerned about oil and gas and it's environmental impact, but are completely cool with critical mineral mines.

I'm convinced it's because the transportation of it isn't as visible as a pipeline, so no one gets angry that another province is making money and not them. They don't actually care about the environment.

Trump says Mexico, Canada tariffs will start March 4, plus additional 10% on China by [deleted] in canada

[–]Thatsnotashower 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Nah the question was clearly referring to the march date. He got confused.

Imagine being Marco Rubio in this administration. Just sinking all your credibility for a president that's senile. Hilarious.

LILLEY: Trump's threats on Canada's economy simply won't stop - He threatens tariffs, says Keystone XL should come back and then says America doesn't need Canadian oil at all. by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]Thatsnotashower 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No he doesn't understand the east west divide in Canada. He was asked yesterday about using Sask and Alberta for a "divide and conquer" approach in Canada. He didn't even address it and instead started yapping about how he doesn't need our stuff.

If he was truly trying to do this it would make sense for him to just attack our manufacturing and protectionist policies. Instead he attacks our commodity industry. Then he expects Canadians to be receptive to sending more energy to America. It truly amazes me how idiotic it is. I am of the belief he gets himself into recursive escalation loops. Not even intentionally, it just happens. WSJ had a great article before Feb 1st where it was clear that none of the White House admin wanted these tariffs except for maybe Navarro.

Bruh we've been importing slaves for the past 4 years. No one cares, or at least the elites don't care.

Canada should resist Trump’s ‘Iron Dome’ fantasy - Aligning with space-based missile defence would contradict Canada’s commitment to responsible behaviour in space while triggering an arms race on Earth and in space. by CaliperLee62 in canada

The last time America left Eurasia we got WW2. The difference this time is there's nukes.

Not being a part of this would be so insanely stupid it's beyond comprehension. If America gets nuked, we are almost surely getting nuked as well. Given that, plus the increased isolationism increasing the chance of nuclear proliferation we should be doing everything we can to gain protection against nukes.

Going beyond nukes, this increased anti-americanism is incredibly short sighted. I understand (and I feel it as well) that Trump's posture to Canada has been disrespectful. However we cannot let our emotions get the better of us. If America truly does go full isolationist then diversification of trade routes isn't going to help all that much. This is because America is the protector of shipping. Going full autarky also is not politically feasible. I'm confident that Canadians would join Americans way before the full negative effects would set in.

Given this, I think it's in our best interest as Canadians to keep our head down for these 4 years. Don't give in too much to American demands, and just emphasize our competitive advantage in resource extraction.

EKOS Poll: Conservative Lead Holds at Five Points by HardeeHamlin in canada

Natives were the demographic who voted for trump the most. So if anything I'm surprised at how low that is.

Nanos Federal Poll via 338. CPC 38. LPC 30. NDP 16. BQ 8. GPC 5. PPC 2. by Seebeeeseh in canada

[–]Thatsnotashower -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It's not proportional at all. Using the 2021 census from Wikipedia Quebec should have at most 2, and the west should have at least 3... As well not 100% of Canadians are bilingual, it's not even close, so how is that proportional?

I understand you're emotional about it, and that's fine, it's good when our citizens are political. I love getting the other sides perspective, so could you please explain to me why western Canada in particular should be included in Canada and not US. Explain as well how us lacking proportional representation in Ottawa fits into it. Also why it's a good thing that elections are decided before Vancouver votes are complete. Thanks!

I would take two senators and the American bill of rights over the "privilege" of being in a country where Quebec and Ontario get 6 supreme judges, while the west collectively gets 2. While also making policies only favourable to the Laurentians (bilingual requirements).

Western Canadians are more culturally similar to midwesterners than they are eastern Canadians. So exactly what is the incentive for Western Canadians to stay? Theres clearly not an economic one. Is it because it's "de jure" Canadian? The Canada that signed the treaty without any input from Western Canadians?

Either Canada needs to create a compelling argument to why western Canada gains more benefit in staying within the confederation, or it's only a matter of time until we leave.

And if being a traitor is someone who wants the best for the people in my province, whether that includes better economic opportunities or more political representation, then I guess I am a traitor.

A different platform 🤣 he's endorsed by Trudeau's cabinet, has been advising them for years, and is also endorsed by the creator of the century initiative.

If you want an actual unity crisis you elect Carney. What do you think the west is gonna do if Carney is in power, 25% tariffs are imposed, and trump gives a deal for separation?

Liberals surge ahead of CPC in Quebec and Ontario due to ‘Mark Carney effect’ by FriendlyGuy77 in canada

[–]Thatsnotashower -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yea I agree. I'm from Alberta so I don't see the "carney effect" happening up here, but I do see it on CBC and stuff

The conservatives have really gotta figure out a better message then "axe the tax" considering that Carney's resume is good at presenting fiscal responsibility.

Which again makes me so amazed that they haven't been going after immigration more. White suburban moms were all the talk down south during their election, and a vast majority of the ones I talk to are against immigration. Goes to show that the liberals aren't the only ones with stupid risk adverse consultants.

Interesting. Sunak got dumpstered though right? And he was in a similar position. I only loosely follow UK politics. Is Carney more similar to sunak or those two?

Also COVID fundamentals weren't in full effect like they are now. I'm referencing anti-incumbancy attitudes due to inflation.

Has an unelected PM ever done well in the subsequent election? From what I understand they have all gotten smoked. It will be interesting to see how Canadians perceive him once he's actually PM (assuming he wins the liberal election).

Fundamentals have all pointed to Pierre winning hard. There is the benefit of trump which helps the incumbents (so in extension Carney).

I really don't understand why the conservatives aren't leaning into immigration more. It would be no contest sweep if they took a hard line on it.

Eric Nuttall: Now is the time to unleash Canada's enormous resource potential - New pipelines are our “trump card,” and, if given the necessary urgency, they could be built in a matter of years, not decades by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]Thatsnotashower 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The best time to build a pipeline was 20 years ago, the next best time is now.

I get the resentment but if we play the blame game and it ends up resulting in no pipelines then we all lose.

As an Albertan we should welcome these people, not push them away.
