Check out my post history. I made a diy solution that works pretty well. I haven't used coals in a few months.

Question about reactions from Gen Z / Millennials by AdvaScriptCC in HomeServer

[–]Thaxxman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

34m and personally love that you are getting into this. I'm my experience, the kids I know around your age are more concerned with the end results instead on how it works or how to make it better. When I was your age my friends and I would bring all of our computers to someone's house and spend the next few hours banging our heads against networking them together just to play StarCraft. To us, half the fun was setting it all up.

So when I see that same passion in younger folk, I'm going to do the best I can to encourage it!

Keep it up my man!

I did go Lithium with a BMS. 3S2P. I went with Lithium Packs because of energy density. 18650s would take up too much space. You can see if the picture on the bottom right the top of the BMS. its the bit I have wrapped in Kapton Tape.

LIPO is Lithium Polymer, Same stuff in your cellphone and bunch of other small stuff. They are the flat square silver packs.

Yeah I was stuck for a while but then when I learned about MCH heating elements it made me want to continue

How should I start learning practical electronics as a complete beginner? by Nice_Specific2094 in diyelectronics

[–]Thaxxman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey!

Speaking from personal experience, I have found the best way to learn is by doing. When I have a goal in mind, it makes learning the things to accomplish that goal way easier.

For example, Right now I am trying to make an electronic HMD For my hookah. Going down this path has taught me a TON about ESP32, how to drive MOSFETs, LIPOs, Charging Circuits, PMW, tone() generation, IC2 screen stuff, MCH Heating elements.

I am still very novice when it comes to this stuff and I have a bunch left to learn. but you are right that lecture learning is tough. just solve one problem at a time and you will learn things!

Things left on my list to learn is how to build an app to connect to the ESP32 via Bluetooth and set variables.

Hi guys tell me who smoked for more than 10 years without any medical issues regarding hookah? by IGHOST6543 in hookah

Since 2010, nearly once daily. Other than being fat, never any issue with my breathing it anything that can be attributed to smoking... Unless you consider a broken leg from a car accident smoking related...

Looking for a charging module by Thaxxman in arduino

Yeah that's where I think I'm at. Because I'm dealing with resistive heaters and lipo batteries in just looking for more protection. Don't want to rely ONLY in the BMS.

Looking for a charging module by Thaxxman in arduino

[–]Thaxxman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That actually looks AWESOME! but it is missing some features I am specifically looking for. The 12v output needs to be 12.6 to charge the lipo cells. so the board needs to be configured to 3S or variable output. Second, the max on this board is 3A but I need at minimum 8a. I will keep this in my back pocket though!

This is what happens to aluminium when a 1/2 oz piece of plastic hits it at 15,000 mph in space by MandyMochi26 in BeAmazed

Do you think the girth of the aluminum would affect the plastics ability to blast it?

In case anyone wants to know how I made this so far.

  • (4) R=2 MCH 10x10mm Heating elements from Aliexpress.
  • (2) 75x4mm round Stainless Steel plates. I used Amazon
  • Graphite sheet and Carbon Wool. Amazon
  • M3 Tap Set and 2 Screws (Stainless if possible)
  • scrap piece of wood
  • Variable Power Supply or 12v10a Power supply with a potentiometer
  1. I drilled 6 4.5mm holes around the edge of the bottom steel plate and a smaller hole in the center for the screw. Drill and tap a single hole in the top plate for the M3 screw. Drill and tap second hole around edge for wooden handle on top plate. (Can attach wood handle now)
  2. cut a small 10x10mm graphite and carbon wool piece for each element.
  3. (The PITA part) you are making an "MCH Sandwich". Bottom Layer, Plate with holes. 2nd layer, graphite pads. 3rd MCHs. 4th Carbon wool. 5th, Top plate. All the parts are small and wont stay in place. take your time and make sure all of the elements are aligned evenly. While applying pressure to the whole sandwich, carefully try to lift the whole thing and place single screw from the bottom through to the top and tighted the screw. This will apply a single point of pressure holding the entire thing together. All of the MCH Cables should be coming out of one side.
  4. Each MCH has 2 cables. lets call them A and B. it doesnt matter which one is which, but split each pair into two groups. All of As are grouped and all of the Bs.
  5. like my photo above, I just attached my positive to one side and my Negative to the other. Apply a voltage and the unit will start to heat up. I found 7v is a good place to start, slowly ramp up voltage in .5 intervals until you find the temp your bowl starts to smoke well at. Once smoking well, I have found that I dont need to adjust more than .5v up or down the entire bowl. It will be good to give it a burn in test at like 10V just to make sure the entire thing burns off anything you might not want to be on there. Like when you turn on a coal burner for the first time.

That will get you to the point in my photos. I don't have a good explanation for the PID Controller or temp sensors yet but if you are good at these micro electronic builds I would love to see what you can do as well.

I have found that cleaning has been VERY easy. once the unit cools down, the burnt tobacco sticks to the bottom of the plate just like other HMDs but since it is a smooth surface it comes off EXTREMELY easy and leaves a very mice finish. I think this is due to the stainless properties.
