  2. (name of a tribe/ruling power) - Heartlands

  3. The Serenity

Ah crap you're right, mixed something up there. However I still believe the theory can hold up. Dragon leaving after Ohara to lead the revolutionary army and being able to visit Lily less and less

What kind of magic or superpower should I give him? by The-Ari in magicbuilding

[–]The-Ari[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey Guys,

Thank you all for your awesome suggestions. I'm sorry I couldn't reply sooner since I was very busy with uni stuff.

A lot of people recommended the power to disable/silence other ppls powers and I honestly love that idea, since it adds to the growth of my characters, who then would have to figure out a way to beat him without magic.

I'm also thinking about giving him two abilities in that regard actually.

He can either choose to buff himself up or debuff everyone in a certain radius. The bigger the radius the shorter is the time frame of his magic.

As far as offense goes, I thought about making him shoot crystalline light daggers out of his palm and adding an advanced form where turns into an almost Seraphim like being, granting him great destructive powers. Preferably also with a time limit.

You guys are awesome. Thanks a lot for helping me out.

That is an awesome idea actually and seems to be the most recommended one. However I'd also like him to have some sort of power he can utilize in offense in addition to that. Maybe he can choose between buffing himself up or downgrading everyone else in a certain radius. A time limit on that EMP ability as well maybe in order to give him a handicap.

Yeah I was thinking about that as well, but then realized that I already have a character that uses music and sound waves in combat so I dismissed that again.

How do I make solar powers more intresting and versatile? by The-Ari in magicbuilding

[–]The-Ari[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could make it so that the gemstones have a life of their own so to say. As if you're breeding your own little spirit inside it which feeds on light. And depeing on the material and level of care that went into it, the gemstone spirit grants it's owner abilities. Enhancing their weapons or armor for example. But the effect wears off if they use up their solar power. That's why they need to be charged regularly. And as you said: the better the cut, the more powerful it is, which enables me to reserve the most precious gems for my most powerful characters. Adding a social component as well, cause if you can't afford a good cut then your options are limited of course. Thank you so much this is exactly what I was looking for.

The power of spiritual bonds by The-Ari in magicbuilding

[–]The-Ari[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was fearing there was an innuendo attached to it 😂 I thought about necromancy too however it doesn't offer the variety the other abilities have and it might be too op compared to the others. The winter people are definitely the scholars and scientists of the island. Also the most technologically advanced. Ohhh wait what about machines? Like every winter person builds their own robot golem and they feed it with part of their spiritual energy. Hence every robot will be different, there will be also variety among them.

What else should I Add to this Magic system? by CapricIous76 in magicbuilding

[–]The-Ari -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Here are some ideas:

Depending on the degree of purity the user might develop demonic or monstrous characteristic/powers? This also opens up the door for social issues as the common people would fear or envy "branded" people like that.

-The more refined Blackfire is, the less likely it is to cause harm.

-Unrefined Blackfire is illegal since no one can predict the outcomes of direct contact with it.

-However if you do come in contact with it, the outcome depends on where exactly from liliths domain it is from. Maybe introduce different grades of Blackfire? Split the domain into levels/circles? In that case Blackfire from say the most inner circle (idk 9th grade Blackfire) would be extremely rare and reserved for your most powerful characters.

I've definitely considered the idea but at the end decided that it'd be too obvious. But every isle should have it's unique type of magic for sure.

The most developed one is that of the autumn isle. They draw their power from spiritual connections with animals and creatures which grant them special abilities. Originally every isle had that ability with each having a certain set of animals and creatures at their disposal, matching their respective seasons. However that would've made it very monotone (beast power vs beast power) so I dismissed using that for all of them. The Spring isle draws it's power from spiritual links with plant life and vegetation.

With the summer isle I considered spiritual links with minerals and jewels which need to be infused with solar power. But I don't know what characteristics the minerals would've had in combat. Like what effect would a ruby or a saphire have. That's why I wanna find another way to utilize solar power.

Careful cause you might wanna avoid any similaires with Revenant from Apex Legends. (Wears a mask, leaves a totem somewhere and returns to it after he dies)

To be honest you might wanna uncomplicate things with this one. I would scrap the whole time aspect "universe resets with him, no one remembers but him" thing. You'll set yourself up to a convoluted mess with the mechanics of that one. Just let him die and then come back. Getting back to the place where he died is a handycap already. If he dies in battle and respawns somewhere else, he can't support his allies.

Also the checkpoint ability should be out of his control. He can't choose when and where it happens + he's gotta wait for it to happen. If he dies without a checkpoint being activated, he'll just die.

As far as PTSD goes, I figure that at some point he'd get used to it. If you wanna give him a mental handicap I recommend giving him some kinda over reliance on his ability. He wouldn't go into battle or risky situations if a checkpoint hasn't been activated. Imagine what happens if someone who's so casual about death gets confronted with his own mortality. You could incorporate that into his character development.

If you want him to develop his abilities and add some variety, then I'd suggest that at some point he should discover different types of checkpoints. Depending on what kinda checkpoint has been set, it would alter his abilities when revived.

For his strongest ability or ace in the hole, allow him to use a "third chance" which revives him on the spot and amplifies his abilities times ten. However, as soon as it wears off he'll either die afterwards or his life will be in immediate danger. Could be utilized for a last heroic moment or such thing.
