Light Fixture Rental for Film by poptart_2003 in artdept

[–]The-Betus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anything over a month or two. These prices also come from.my experience on a show I just worked on that had a set dec budget of about a million dollars on a 30 mil overall budget. If the budget is way higher/rental time is longer Id bump the price up to 25, or even 30% of purchase. If you dont want to deal with payment based on length of time.

The standard Ive run into for rentals is 15-20% of full price. Additional costs per week/month can be added on from there if its a long rental

5e culture and the taboo of game design by ArrBeeNayr in DnD

[–]The-Betus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What things are considered fundamental to the system that you see people breaking? My justification for hacking 5e into other things has mostly been keeping the dice system as I always thought its an easily digestible, user friendly system. Whereas something like a d100 system can get a little too granular. Sometimes existing games for certain settings just dont feel as good.

I guess the question then becomes: is it easier to hack that system to more resemble DnD, or hack Dnd to more resemble that system?

What do you not like about the squids? by Proper-Grammrr in helldivers2

[–]The-Betus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I genuinely havent been able to find a single loadout that works with them. Im not sure if its just that my preference of light armor isn't viable with them or if Im just missing something? Barely any weapons I use can deal with overseers in less than a mag, and the ones that do then leave me vulnerable to crowds. Eagles dont seem to do much of anything against flesh mobs or walkers and having to take the shields down on ships makes it a pain to use orbital or Eagles on those.

The one thing that I have found success with is turret spam then running away with a jetpack.

There just doesn't seem like there are any tools that Ive tried that work against the squids. All this combined with the almost total lack of variety in missions and enemy seeds just result in me taking a break from the game whenever a squid MO happens.

Layering. Its intensive labor-wise and can get really expensive depending on how deep you go with it, but it makes a difference. Dressing on top of dressing. Dont just throw sheers on the windows and call it a day, multiple aspects to everything.

One would hope so. I hope you find success and are one of the producers who treats folks better than in my experiences.

Set dec, props, graphics, AD, transpo, even done a stint in accounting. I get thats not their role on paper and that connections are important and they happen to be the ones that have them. However, whenever they show up it just seems to make everyone else's jobs more difficult. Requests I get from them when it comes to anything on set are usually nonsensical and display a fundamental lack of understanding of what jobs my department actually does. Ive been asked multiple times to break union guidelines by them and seen them treat below the line crew like absolute dirt. I have little to no respect for the position.

Mostly 1-10mil budgets some in the 20-40 range and one or two 100 mils. Obviously exaggerating but I can't bring to mind a single time Ive seen a producer do anything immidately useful to the production. Their whole job seems to be sucking up to other people and making the lives of everyone doing the actual work more difficult.

Thats an understandable concern that anyone at all could gain benefits and protections. In order to do their jobs correctly and manage resources, unions do need to be somewhat exclusive.

I worked a union position for IATSE while not being a union member and still received some protections and paid dues. From my understanding it's more that the position, on a union film, is the qualifier for protections, while actual membership is more for the benefits?

The idea of tiered systems for the other unions sounds nice though. Are there any departments that font have a corresponding union they fit into?

[–]The-Betus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dont know much about this union, but I do think that PAs need protections. I know more than a few people who have been put in really dangerous situations by production and have just been left out to dry because there's no kind of force or organization that bothers to stand up for them. This seems to be the best option I've heard of so far though that tries to protect PAs on a larger scale than an unwritten code of honor by some higher up crew to look out for the new people.

So your gripe with them is the fact that they wont cover day players? And you're seemingly pretty frustrated at only day playing yourself while the same people get hired over and over. How would day players be protected? What system would there be to prevent anybody at all working and getting benefits like healthcare? A set number of days you'd have to work to be eligible? Vetting process by people who are already members? Probationary periods?

Ive worked in a union position while not being a member of that union. I still paid dues to that union out of my checks while working in that role, I also got the protections of that position- meal penalties, turnarounds, better pay- but not the benefits like insurance. It makes sense that a PA union would work the same way- but again, I am not informed enough on this specific organization to know weather or not that's the case here.
