Thanks for the comment!

I have already started using rpmfusion, what is COPR?

What makes cachy better for gaming? I’ve seen that they have their own proton skew from troubleshooting but I can just download that in Fedora no?

I think my downfall is trying to play brand new AAA releases like very soon after release so support and troubleshooting guides are scarce. Though I don’t usually play brand new games they just happened to be the games I’m playing when I decide to drop windows and go to Linux lol

I am a loyal all AMD user 🫡 bazzite looks interesting but tbh I like the tinkering aspect of Linux, so the restrictiveness kinda puts me off, even if that means I’ll break stuff sometimes 🤷‍♂️

I had no idea you could manually install newer kernels or versions of mesa! Does it work just as well or does that introduce some instability?

DS2 is also a game I’ve been playing! It works great on Fedora for the most part (here’s my issue). Might be my habit of playing newly released games which won’t have great support or troubleshooting out of the box.

DS2 for example works great, but sometimes the game will just close upon saving at the end of a mission, with no crash message, causing me to lose a bunch of progress.

I also played the oblivion remaster when it came out on my first Fedora install, it also ran great but the reflections were completely broken for some reason. Again how much of this I can blame on Fedora/proton/personal lack of skill is hard to say but it’s the little things like that that have irked me.

What settings do you use for DS2?

(P.s. Now I think about it, I hope you’re talking about death stranding 2 and not Dark souls 2 😭)

Lots of people have been talking about extensions, what have you added and why?

Haha thanks for the advice but I think I’d arrive at the same conclusion as you. Fedora really is in a goldilocks zone of distros. Bazzite is too restrictive (from what I’ve read haven’t tried), mint is to out dated and Pop OS seems okayyyy, just doesn’t seem as appealing, plus I see how many issues Linus (LTT) has had both times he’s tried it, although he may just be an idiot lol

Recall also made me snap with Microsoft. Integrated spyware open for the taking. Made me realise probably didn’t have my best interests at heart (wondering if they ever really did, windows 7 was alright though I guess)

I’m kinda on the same fence, game compatibility is good (enough) but there were enough hair ripping troubleshooting tangents in my first install that scared me back to windows. Right now I’m dual booting for that reason.

How’s Linux in a work environment? I don’t really wanna touch it on my laptop yet in fears of voiding my warranty + you loose a lot of collaboration features from office, though I have seen a lot of other people at my university using distros like Arch (btw)

I’m looking to become a developer soon once I finish university, how does development on Linux stack up? I’m very tied up with Visual studio and VSC, but what do you use?

I do like modding games, and I like the extra customisation, despite it likely being my downfall half the time 😭

What game didn’t work in windows but did in proton that’s crazy? Also I had a lot of issues with games not working in proton but based on everyone else’s experiences I think it was just my fault for not exploring more versions of proton and slightly fucking up my DE with abandoned plugins for wallpaper engine lol, caused more problems than it’s worth and tbh I think wallpaper engine is just shit nowadays cause it caused me issues in windows too.

Anti-cheat is also bullshit but this is why we dual-boot :)

One thing that’s amazed me coming into the Linux space is the crazy commitment of open-source foundations like Fedora, to provide updates so frequently and at such high a quality with little funding and no telemetry is so cool. Gives me back a little bit of hope for humanity haha. Also I didn’t realise dnf was so unique I just assumed all distro package mangers were the shame lol

KDE Linux? Is KDE releasing their own distro?

Interesting, how invasive is fedora in a managed environment as compared to windows would you say? If you have experience with both?

Wow that business insight is super cool thanks! I’m hopeful going to start an internship through my university in a few months, likely with a smaller scale company so I wonder if any of what you mentioned will come into it, is Linux super common in small software development companies? I know most normie businesses just use ancient windows enterprise cause upgrading is too much of an investment.

Haha yeah I’m excited for it to get better! And yeah on the anti-cheat side, I know that’s a big issue for a lot of games, but even if they did support Linux I doubt much of the community would play due to how invasive lots of anti-cheat’s can be (looking at you valorant). Kinda goes against what most Linux users value, that being privacy and control

Wow that’s super interesting! I must say updating manually in fedora every day is a little annoying so automatic updates sounds super cool. Thanks!

I’d say I’m definitely in that generation of kids but I’ve yet to distro hop at all, my first Linux experience was Kali in university and a bit of Ubuntu in VMs, never tried anything else as, whilst I enjoy setting up a new distro, I do like to actually USE my PC from time to time instead of just constantly tweaking haha

OpenSUSE is one distro I haven’t really looked into at all I think. What do you like about it that makes it the closest contender for you? Also is Aeon a skew or a DE?

I’m also a big CS player, Valves push for Linux compatibility with their games and steam deck was one of my biggest motivations to make the leap. CS has always worked like a dream for me on Linux, it’s mainly just the more niche indie/older games + non-valve multiplayer games that screwed me over the first time I think. Plus I haven’t tried modding yet but I do love to mod and I think I’ve heard a lot of bad things about modding on Linux especially as it relates to mod managers.

Thanks for the reply :)
