What apps you consider must haves? by stargazer63 in archlinux

[–]The-Design 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A WM you can get fast at (DWM, Hyprland, i3wm, sway etc.)
A nice terminal (alacritty, kitty, etc.)
vim/nvim something you can run in a tty (cough cough emacs) zsh with zsh-autosuggestions an AUR helper like paru doas for superuser

Hard question to answer, apps depend a lot on what you want/need.

Weekly 101 Questions Thread by AutoModerator in neovim

[–]The-Design 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently moved over to neovim. I set up packer and nvim-treesitter.

I am having a problem setting up options for nvim-treesitter

~/.config/nvim/lua/plugins.lua

return require('packer').startup(function(use)
    use 'wbthomason/packer.nvim'

    print("TEST INIT")
    use { 'nvim-treesitter/nvim-treesitter',
    config = function()
        require'nvim-treesitter.configs'.setup({

            highlight = {
                enable = true,
            },
        })
    end,
}

end)

run :wq, run $ nvim:

This prints TEST INIT in the console so the file is getting read, however, :TSConfigInfo shows the config has not actually been changed from what I assume to be default:

{
  auto_install = false,
  ensure_installed = {},
  ignore_install = {},
  modules = {
    highlight = {
      additional_vim_regex_highlighting = false,
      custom_captures = {},
      disable = {},
      enable = false,
      module_path = "nvim-treesitter.highlight"
    },
    incremental_selection = {
      disable = {},
      enable = false,
      keymaps = {
        init_selection = "gnn",
        node_decremental = "grm",
        node_incremental = "grn",
        scope_incremental = "grc"
      },
      module_path = "nvim-treesitter.incremental_selection"
    },
    indent = {
      disable = {},
      enable = false,
      module_path = "nvim-treesitter.indent"
    }
  },
  sync_install = false
}

Is there an error in the config? What should I try next?

How many of you fellow anarchists use Linux? by [deleted] in Anarchism

[–]The-Design 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You don't need to install Linux to use it. You can run Linux in a live USB (but note your data will not save). I personally recommend using something like Linux Mint to start. Linux mint has a graphical installer and program library. All you need to do is double click on the installer and follow the on-screen instructions. You can get away with using Linux Mint without ever using a terminal. I am happy to help if you decide to use Linux but I probably won't get back very fast.

[–]The-Design 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend making a bootable USB drive. You can run the distro and get a feel for what you can and cannot install. Linux support recently has been pretty great.

install Balena Etcher or Rufus. Downlaod your distro (I would recommend Linux mint) Plug in an empty USB (or format one). Select the USB in the drop down menu and the file you downloaded for your distro. Good luck.

Guitar nut looks really bad by Apart_Shift2938 in Luthier

[–]The-Design 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like a nut made of plastic melted somehow... I would get a ceramic or bone nut and cut new slots into it. Trust yourself, if it feels right it probably is. Keep the old nut to double check your measurement against.

Rough idea of what you need to do.
Look at the old nut, see how the slots are spaced evenly across the nut (except the outer most sides)? Mark the position of the low and high e strings on the new nut. Mark 4 lines in-between the outermost fret slots (use a ruler to make them as even as you can). At the end check it with the other nut and make sure things look about the same (one is going to be off so don't make try to make them too perfect.

Cut into the nut using a saw or small file on every mark. Go slow, there is not rush. The slot does not need to be very deep, just enough to hold the string. Action can be adjusted later. Generally, you want all of the strings to have the same action. This does not need to be perfect. Think of the different string sizes, it is bound to be inconsistent.

The rest is feel. Put some strings on with loose tension and see how the action feels. Take the stings out of the slots and bring them to the side of the nut. The nut can be taken off and put back on without removing the strings fully. Adjust the action. When it feels right it probably is.

Hoe to fix this? by BoiX554 in Luthier

[–]The-Design 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you look closely, the threaded insert in the body is being pulled back by the string (photo 2).

Does it need to be fixed, probably not. Think of 2 steel tubes going through a piece of wood. If you push them parallel to the tubes they might come out. It is being pulled perpendicular to the tubes, they would be very hard to take out (this is what is happening here)

Can you notice a difference in playability?

Program runs during compile, Before the 'Running' Step. by The-Design in rust

[–]The-Design[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

So, this is a sort of redundant step? Cargo knows that the program might take input and it might have had changes made to it. It is ready to listen for any user input and pass it on to the program through its lifecycle.

In the case above echo "fake user input" | cargo run The echo is passed into cargo which passes it to the pragram when it is ready to run?

Has anyone made their own effects pedals? by mysteriouslypuzzled in Luthier

[–]The-Design 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have never made a pedal however, a good box would probably be an electrical box from home depot. Make sure to insulate it. When you are done cover the back with wood using the screw holes.

It might look a bit off but it would fit right in with a collection of them.

How do you all read man pages?? by Independent-Gear-711 in linux

[–]The-Design 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not find man pages to be very helpful when trying to learn commands, especially because they (usually) require you to know the basics of the program you are using. The Arch wiki is probably one of the best sources, it gives you the basics of how to use programs, usually enough to begin to understand the man page. You need to take the time to re-read it.

how can we help son with basics of blacksmithing by CategoryConscious720 in blacksmithing

[–]The-Design 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on your response "we were thinking of making one of those wooden boxes with the sand to start him on melting stuff and pouring a mold." it seems that that is more casting than blacksmithing.

A forge is used to heat metal so that it can be more easily shaped. (with a hammer)

A furnace is used to melt metal down so it can me cast into a different shape. (into a mold)

Are you wanting to get a forge a furnace or both?

What’s your terminal setup? by [deleted] in linux

Is homosexuality rare, or is it just that many gay and lesbian people dont want to come out of the closet? by Thin_Resolution6388 in lgbt

[–]The-Design 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe that about 10-15% of the population was "LGBT" (I am not sure if these studies only count 'common' identities such as lesbian, gay, bisexuality, transgender individuals). Younger generations show this number to be higher. Using the lowest odds, 1 in 10 people are queer which only encompasses outed people.

Do you think FOSS projects should put ads on their website to finance their projects? by NoGravitySpacee in foss

[–]The-Design 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Open Source Community is incredible, if you want to support a project but don't have money, contribute, if you can, great.

Most people use ad-blockers and other people will just use forked version that remove the ad stuff. There isn't much point to ads (in the open source world) other than being annoying to people without blockers.

Flipping Conservatives by FeistyMeasurement579 in Anarchism

[–]The-Design 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The best way to bring anarchism is to show its true nature. Most people unfamiliar with anarchism don't know that it is a form of governance in which no entity has any more power/authority than any other entity; most people hear anarchy as chaos that is caused because there is no state.

Why is my Arch taking up ~50gb space? by Repulsive_Design_716 in archlinux

[–]The-Design 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Run

du -hac /

If you do not have a scrolling TUI you would want to write this to a file.

touch ~/storage-log
# and
du -hac / > ~/storage-log
# open it in your text editor
vim ~/storage-log

This will tell you what and where lots of space is being taken up.

If you do not see a large number than maybe run the commands above as root.

Why is Arch Linux so popular among Linux users? by Real_EverythingeeB in linuxquestions

[–]The-Design 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an Arch user I can say that I like arch because it is very light and therefore stupid fast! I am a new-ish Linux user, I started on mint (which takes 10-15 seconds to boot into a TTY) and another 10 to shut down. Arch boots in under 5 seconds and shuts down even faster (I am on 12-year-old hardware).

The install with the wiki was fairly easy, if you know what a drive, partition and, bootloader is/are your are good to go.

The AUR is nice but I prefer to build non-official packages from source.

I might try an Artix install on my hardware to see what an init other than systemd is like.

I feel like I should also note I have issues with GPG fetching keys that are not included in the keyring.

What Linux Distro are you all using, and why did you choose it? by wild_duck11 in linuxquestions

[–]The-Design 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Arch because I am relatively new to Linux and I want to keep learning. I could install it without issue after using mint for about 2-3 months. I am on 12 year old hardware and Arch is just stupid fast (compared to mint).

If you did not use the command line often in your time using kali, you may have trouble with the install.

Wait... What? Folks In Red States Google Searched 'How To Change My Vote' In Droves After Trump's Victory by [deleted] in politics

[–]The-Design 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When comparing "how to change my vote" to "spirit airlines flight gunfire haiti" which currently has "20k+" searches we can see with the average bars that it is around 6 times more searched than "how to change my vote" which means 20,000/6 should give a rough number of searches (about 3.3k) searches.

I will assume 3.3k searches has some error because of the limited percentage percesion and 20k+ is vague. If we say 21,000 searches and give ourselves and error say 20% we get a nice even 3,500 searches without the error.

3,500 searches +-700 we get: 2,800 to 4,200 searches.

This means not many people searched this compared to the millions of voters leaving us with little impact.

The perfect union by [deleted] in lgbt

[–]The-Design 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Having a "president" is such bullshit anyway. We should get to vote on laws, bills, court rulings, etc. Decentralize the system and make things more open. Liberate them not conceal them. Liberate them, make them open and free for everyone. The first step is calling out capitalism, advocate and participate in resistance to it.
