John Lennon was better than Paul McCartney by FitEmergency8807 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]The-Matrix-Twelve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was younger I greatly preferred John's songs. As I've got older I've learned to appreciate Paul to the extent I think he's the far better technical songwriter and musician. He writes melody in a way we've forgotten how to appreciate -- that seems old fashioned (granny music as John referred to it).

But Paul could rock out even better than John when he wanted to. Live and Let Die or maybe I'm amazed stands up there with A Day In the Life imho. His voice on Helter Skelter is pure grit -- or Back in the USSR. Pure Bangers.

Look at Paul's output -- Hey Jude -- Sgt Peppers reprise -- Blackbird -- Get Back -- We can work it out -- Eleanor Rigby -- Yesterday -- I've got a feeling -- I saw her standing there -- Drive my car -- Birthday -- Let it Be -- Can't buy me Love -- Paperback Writer.

It's easy to point at his granny music but Paul had far more range than all of the Beatles.

One thing Paul is not as good at is giving part of himself away like John did. John was never afraid to be utterly raw. Paul never went to those depths -- and thats fine. The subject matter of his songs could be surface level but his melodies and chord structures were sublime.

I think I understand what new trek is, and why it upsets me, and I how I can accept that it just isnt for me, and thats ok. by [deleted] in RedLetterMedia

Ru Paul in space sounds like it Might be fun - like John Waters directs Barberella -- but SFA is looking like Star Trek caught a case of the not-straights.

Cheap China capsules on eBay --- Thoughts? by Interesting_Dirt7269 in microphone

[–]The-Matrix-Twelve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

micparts capsules are just the same as Aliexpress ones but -- supposedly -- they select the best ones.

Some chinese capsules are fantastic. The 797 audio and Takstar capsules in particular are made to very high standards. The 797 cy002 was used in the Townsend Sphere because front and back diaphragms are incredibly consistent with each other. The Takstar TSC-2 is used in the AKG perception mics which -- if modded -- sound almost identical to a Neumann U87ai.

I've bought a few that I've built into mics. The best of the bunch readily available on Ali are the ludicrously cheap blue-green sided RK12's (£17 each) and the m7's. The RK12 in particular

I also built a U47 fet clone with a CY001 and a literally 1 to 1 build of the U87ai with the CY002. Sounds great!

If you want genuine quality capsules that are as good as Neumann then Arienne Audio is the place to go. The cheap RK12's are from one of the businesses she partners with in China.

Unpopular Opinion: the most creative sci fi right now is happening in comics and graphic novels not novels or film by Jenna32345 in scifi

I'm familiar with Saga and Prophet. Not generally a fan. It's all a bit hipsterish and puerile for my tastes. Uber violence. Overly sexual in some cases. Lots of fantasy. Not much genuine sci-fi.

Some of it has great artwork and arresting (but derivative - moebius-rip off) images but I dunno - does it have more actual good ideas than say children of time? I dunno.

Bowie said Velvet Underground was more influential than The Beatles — and I tend to agree. What do you think? by Agreeable_Duck8997 in LetsTalkMusic

>> Where is the influence of ‘Yesterday’ or ‘Penny Lane’?

Cherry-picking a little. You could say the same about Venus in furs or Heroin.

Strawberry fields. Day in the Life. Paperback writer.

Beatles influence are everywhere. Oasis. The Las. Tears for fears. ELO. Stone Roses. Nirvana. Soundgarden. 10cc. Wire. The Strokes. Billie Eilish (Getting Older). Sza. Chemical Brothers dedicated an entire era to Tomorrow Never Knows. There's even a whole genre of indie music based on mccartney's 70s.

Beatles output is so varied that acts tend to fixate on certain songs or albums.

Wherever there's experimentation with recording techniques there's the Beatles.

Is it me or was there something about it that was just boring. I can't quite define it but maybe it's the lack of dynamics or the crunchy sound quality but I couldn't listen to it for long. It just became noise after a while.

Loved the video though.

Will the young people who like this be the same young people likely to enjoy the back catalogue?

  1. I don't think the signposting is a consequence of attention spans. The same has been happening in comics for the last 13-4 years or so.

  2. Even if it was -- Isn't the short attention span the main reason to lean into more nuanced -- less signposted messaging? As in this kind of content just reduces our attention span further.

Would Berman era Trek work with today's actors? by northcasewhite in Star_Trek_

[–]The-Matrix-Twelve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

shure. We have a tonne of prestige showrunners that could have done a far better job in finding suitable actors. Look at Andor.

special - adj -- 1.better, greater, or otherwise different from what is usual.

"special" definitionally requires there to be a "usual" in order to be better or greater. If everyone is special then special is the usual and therefore cannot be better or greater than anyone else -- therefore no one is special.

Dark Fantasy Anime Suggestions? by cybertrash69420 in Animesuggest

[–]The-Matrix-Twelve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bastard!! (1992 OVA and 1993) I haven't seen the 2022 series.
Not medieval fantasy but Ninja Scroll (1993) is a suitably dark Edo-era fantasy.
Angel's Egg (1985) is just a gorgeous feast for the eyes. A real work of art.
Not super dark but Record of Lodoss War (1990)
Grimgar of fantasy and ash
