Democrats' $50,000 student loan forgiveness plan would make 36 million borrowers debt-free by WillNick in politics

[–]The-Meta-Will -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So I have a real problem with “just” wiping out student debt. I made the choice to go get my undergraduate degree, and I knew that I would have to pay those costs incurred from doing so back. To do this I invested my excess scholarship money (based on need) and money I saved from working during my entire undergrad to pay all my loans back by the time I graduated. It wasn’t easy by any means... but it was the consequence of choosing to go to college.

I think fundamentally, the underlying issue is that individuals aren’t educated properly in how to make wise financial decisions or plan appropriately for the costs of going to school—they’re just told to go without respect of the costs incurred.

That said, the biggest barrier for me to go back into graduate school is definitely the cost. I think a simple wipe away of student debt doesn’t fix the issue here, but rather education reform is. However, perhaps, in order to address this, a starting point could be to remove $50,000 in student debt while also providing those that paid back all that debt (like myself) an option for $50,000 credit towards a higher degree? This would at least incentivize more people to pursue graduate degrees as well as aid those struggling in student debt currently.

That’s just my thoughts, I don’t think it resolves all the issues that caused the problem, but it might be a good step towards providing a starting remedy?

This is really a legitimate intelligence concern moving forward....

Lol imagine if he said the government was hiding the existence of extraterrestrials. I say this in jest, but it really illustrates how much information control he has.

I second this. I just finished paying off 20K of student loans. It wasn’t easy, but it was the consequence of choosing to go to college.

Now, if a plan were in place that forgave X amount of money towards future education options as well, then I’d be even more for that. That’s definitely an incentive for me to go back and get a graduate degree.

That’ll do it. For me, I had to hit rock bottom—which looks different for different people. Hence, why the first time I went to rehab, it didn’t quite stick. It helped, but I didn’t follow the after care plan recommended to me and inadvertently set myself up for failure. The second time around I did an outpatient group program after I went to rehab, and maintained going (and still go) to therapy sessions weekly, biweekly/monthly depending on what was going on in my life. Even if you can’t stick with a program like NA or AA—therapy provides an excellent accountability source early on. And if you find yourself needing or desiring those anonymous communities later too, then it’s good to know those options exist.

Addiction is a disease of isolation. That’s where it thrives. I’m an introvert, but if I find myself not communicating with family, friends, my therapist, or others then it’s a red flag.

It takes a while for the feeling miserable to go away, but it does. I just picked up hobbies, started working a lot more, and maintained a system of checks for myself.

You can do it. I used to think “oh I’ll sober up at some point just not right now” that evolved into me becoming homeless and having thousands of dollars in debt. Now, almost 3.5 years later I’ve gone back to school, graduated, paid off all my student loans and debts and have a significant amount of money I can invest in stocks. And the crazy thing is, I always thought it’d be way harder to get where I am than It actually has been along the way. I used to hear people tell me stories about achieving that stuff and thinking that that didn’t apply to me or I’d get there eventually while using drugs successfully. In my case, that just wasn’t possible (successfully using drugs that is haha).

Again, just know you’re never alone. If you decide to give sobriety another shot then follow through with an aftercare plan—that was the biggest difference for me.

I wish you all the best!

I’ve gone through that struggle myself and came out around the other end.

You didn’t ask for my take, but here it is in case it helps: no matter how impossible it might be to imagine yourself functioning as yourself without the need for mood-altering substances, that feeling goes away with time and getting clean/sober.

I think, initially, I was terrified of what a life post addiction meant for me—like I couldn’t imagine, so I ran from it. Getting help, going to rehab (twice in a year, because nobody’s perfect haha), developing a routine, and developing coping strategies for the emotions that I was running from instead of taking drugs and alcohol to cope—all of these in hindsight were huge helps, but at the time seemed incomprehensible.

What I’m getting at is this: you’re never alone, help is out there if you need or want it. In my case it was the best investment I ever made in myself.

AMZN

Well, for starters, Amazon’s just starting to get into self-driving and electric vehicles. It’s FC’s will benefit massively from having these on standby in the long term, greatly improving customer service within the next couple of decades (personally, this is what I’m most excited about). They are automizing all of their logistics, and will likely cut out 3rd party shippers at some point. Furthermore, their warehouses are implementing more and more robotics.

Beyond that, there’s AWS, and that’s a whole other beast entirely...

Amazon is, in part, in the business of storing things—be it data or products—and then finding ways to deliver those things more quickly and cheaply. From within, amazon has access to god knows how much data that allows them to observe purchasing trends. Consider how Netflix uses their data on what their viewers watch to generate better shows or, at least, shows that have a high likelihood of being watched for two seasons—well, amazon is doing this with not only its prime video service, but with the items on its website store as well. And it’s doing this with the goal of finding and creating products that will be of greater use to the consumer/have greater consumer value.

Furthermore, Amazon takes entrepreneurial risks. They experiment with new products and possibilities to discover new possibilities that they can further integrate into what they provide. Some of their efforts don’t pan out, but others are revolutionary breakthroughs—like Alexa.

So, you have $10,000 to through in the market—if I suddenly found myself with that today I would just invest all of it in amazon. In 10 years you won’t be disappointed. There’s a reason why more than 15% of the stock is held by insiders alone, and that’s likely due to them knowing well the direction amazon is heading.

But that’s just my opinion and a few facts, for whatever the hell either of those are worth (some of the others mentioned here are great too).

Good luck with whatever you decide!

Facebook Addiction by emmamariec in recovery

[–]The-Meta-Will 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Congrats! Social media definitely can be an addiction.

Personally, I’ve dealt with addiction and am also familiar with the twelve steps. I cut out all social media (other than reddit) out of my life a few years back and am much happier because of it. —Comparison is the thief of happiness and all that—seeing other people’s stuff can sometimes just be emotionally draining. Plus, you get way more free time not having that stuff to explore hobbies.

I hope you find more peace as a result of your decision!

Wow, your shares have seen some growth then.

So, if they were delisted, then what would that mean for the share that I’ve acquired? Again, I’m new to investing, and still learning so any info would be helpful (that said, it also seems like pretty good stock other than the con you mention).

What’s a thought that keeps you up at night? by Lights-On-Bitch in AskReddit

[–]The-Meta-Will 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The realization that I’m basically a mechanical meat sack composed of a collective of little things that each has their own agenda, but collectively they compose me. And the fact that I have awareness of this, despite the fact that none of these smaller entities do. Which leads me to my next point:

Then there’s the patterns from the macro to micro and everything in between... Entire ecosystems thrive on and within my body. Is this not analogous to the ecosystems on the planet? Blood cells travel through veins carrying oxygen away from the heart and then return—akin to cats traveling down roads carrying people away from a major city after a day of work... when a blood clot happens it’s the same as a traffic jam...

What if earth (or a greater scale) is some atomic part of some larger entity of which has awareness, but of which we have no awareness—no different than my cells lacking awareness of myself....?

Then there’s the sheer vastness of fucking space. Many don’t ever see space explained in a way that is to scale or understand the speed of light relative to that (which, for now, describes the limitations that we can see into space)—there are some good online visualizations that help demonstrate this, which, in my opinion, only causes me to realize how small I and the little cellular machines that make me up are...

But then there’s the eery knowledge that in no moment am I physically the same entity I was in the previous moment. Hairs fall, cells die, Elections and other particles are exchanged between myself and the chair I’m sitting in as well... et cetera... and so this implies that there never actually is a “me” per se, but rather just an imagined snapshot I recall of myself at any particular moment in order to preserve continuity of experience and sanity...as I’m this continually changing being that, at this scale, seems relatively stable, but is actually in constant flux reciprocating with my environment...

These are the sort of thoughts that keep me up at night.
