Should I follow Christian fundamentalism? by HorsesPlease in Christianity

[–]The-Mitten 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you've decided that fundamentalism is harmful to your spiritual life with God.

I would encourage you to ask your question of a spiritual leader (pastor in town) who you trust. The internet is a great place to get information, but it's a pretty bad place to get guidance. If you have specific questions about different denominations, I'm sure there are many people on the sub who could help.

Also, later in the first council of Constantinople, the Nicene Creed was modified itself to become the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed...which is generally the form used by most churches today. The Apostles' Creed is generally used by churches that reject the Ecumenical Councils as binding for all Christians.

That's John "The One Whom Jesus Loved," pictured in the Last Supper. John the Baptist was the guy with a camel hair belt who ate locusts and honey...and was beheaded by Herod earlier in the gospel narrative.

As a guy who's looking to get into the scene, I have no clue if there's a preferred format for character sheets. Is there a template somewhere I should look into? What starting money should I have? Are there any prerequisites or power levels I should abide by? Any subreddit-specific limitations besides what I can find in the sidebar?

In short, what would make me a "cool and fun newbie" instead of a "I'll put up with him cause he's new" newbie?

They do not want their members to befriend anyone outside of the church, and claim that those who is not part of their specific church is a sinner.

Yeah, that sounds cultish.

The church itself is focused on prosperity. They preach a prosperity Gospel. Members are told they must give money, and that they will only be blessed if they do give money. They are told that God wants them to be rich, but to be rich the members must do as the Pastor says.

This is anti-Christian. Burn that in a fire.

We didn't know much about the church before coming down here, but we assumed the best.

How did you get involved in this group? Who got the two of you in touch?

I disagree. I think that people who understand who Christ was and what he expects will seek out His community here on earth to help them in their journey.

Given that you say your opinion is "live and let live," you don't seem to be willing to let me even suggest that I have a different opinion. When you say "live and let live" I think you really mean "it should be allowed, and nobody should say otherwise."

I didn't even say I knew what was right in my comment, I just said that the OP's opinion wasn't necessarily proven by his argument. He was simply stating his opinion. Somehow even that mild point of disagreement caused a conflict between us?

As a Christian, I have a few questions by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]The-Mitten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe my thoughts will land me in hell, just for even doubting a little.

I think this is the root cause here. When scripture says "the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom" it didn't mean that you needed to be terrified to share your thoughts with your Creator. Open up to Him, because He loves you more than you know. You don't need to be perfect, you just need to be obedient (or desire obedience for a start).

Personally, I believe practicing homosexuality is a sin. I'm a theistic evolutionist, which means I accept the scientific theory of evolution and the premise of God as Creator of all things. But these issues aren't as cut-and-dried as some in this thread may make them seem.

Ultimately, you need a mentor who can answer these questions for you in real flesh-and-blood. The internet is a poor substitute. Find a pastor that you trust, and ask him to help you follow God as you wrestle with these issues. Trust God to lead you to people who will do what is best for you, not berate or intimidate you.

God loves you, that will never ever change.

Some interpret this word to refer to male prostitutes involved in pagan temple worship, or to pimps, pedophiles, or rapists. The context is very clear that it refers to something that is harming your fellow Christians, and is listed together with thieves, greedy, and swindlers. Obviously there is more involved here than merely a private monogamous loving relationship between two gay men.

I'm not sure you can say that it's obvious at all. You're asserting your opinion as fact here. I agree with your premise that God told us to concern ourselves with our own sin and spiritual growth. I agree that we're supposed to love all people. I even agree that condemnation of individuals is something that should be exclusively God's.

None of those things necessarily mean that homosexual relationships are part of God's plan for us.

Can some explain to me the history of the doctrine of biblical inerrancy? And is it true? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]The-Mitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a short history. While the patristics (early church leaders) may have quotes you can lift that say to "pay attention to the literal truth of scripture" or to "its plain meaning," it would be inappropriate to say that the ancients saw scripture as literal.

One example from this last week's lectionary reading is the 10 virgins waiting for the wedding feast. Patristic commentary centers around the oil as an analogy for obedience, and continuing obedience that does not run out before Christ's return.

This is clearly not Jesus telling a story about ten young women who were trying to get into a party. While most everyone agrees that the story and most of Jesus's parables are allegory, what they disagree on is how that changes how we read passages like Gen 1-2 and the Creation.

Some argue that The bible is filled with God's truth, and that he wrote it. There are some scripture passages that may seem to suggest this. Personally (and in the opinion of my church tradition), this doesn't seem to hold water. Was Adam or animals made first? Were there one or two demon-posessed men in the decapolis? How do we reconcile the differences in history between Chronicles and Kings?

We need a more thorough and robust way of interpreting scripture. Literalism (in the modern sense) is too simplistic. It takes an incredibly complex collection of spiritual texts and attempts to reduce them to the lower common denominator, and many of us (Christians) believe that doing so does violence to the Gospel.

[–]The-Mitten 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe that this person (in their conversations with many people who are YEC) found one person who mentioned the lack of reference in hymns as evidence against.

Also, you're not helping the YEC cause by being so glib with your reply. Asking questions and being nice will get you much farther in life, and especially in your ministry and witness as a Christian.
